Next weekend, May 19 and 20, we

will take up a special Collection for the Church in

Latin America. For many in Latin America and the

Caribbean, rural terrain and a lack of ministers are

obstacles to practicing their faith.

Your support to the collection will help provide lay

leadership training, catechesis, priestly and

religious formation, as well as other programs to

help share our faith with those who long to hear

the Good News of Christ.

Please prayerfully consider supporting this

collection as a way to share your faith with our

brothers and sisters in Latin America and the

Caribbean.

7TH SUNDAY OF EASTER — YYEAREAR B B MMAYAY 13,13, 20182018

T he apostles have been

adapting to a new reality:

living with the Risen Lord.

He came to them when they least

expected it: in the first place, on Easter

Sunday, when He first appeared, to the

various appearances in Jerusalem and

later at the Sea of Galilee, until finally, at

last, He has been raised up into Heaven.

And now, we stand with the Apostles,

gazing dumbfoundedly into the sky.

So now He has gone. But the memories

are too many for us to forget Him: we

think of when He first walked by the

shore of our lives and called us; when He

preached the Beatitudes; the miracles, the

healings, the forgiveness of sins and then

we can imagine the apostles recalling

that blessed night of the Last Supper,

and these words of our Lord.

If there was one phrase of His that

could summarize His life on earth, His

whole purpose, perhaps it was this:

I glorified you on earth by accomplishing

the work that you gave me to do. It was

you who sent me here on this mission: to

reveal your face to those who sought you.

And I have fulfilled this mission perfectly,

out of love. What an example of fidelity

and love for God! Jesus completes His

role to perfection: in every moment, He

seeks to fulfill the Father's will out of

love. Not fear, certainly not because He

feels good, but because love is real. And

this is what goes through the apostles'

minds as they await the coming of the

promised Advocate.

The whole mission of Christ was to

reveal God's name: Our Father. God is

not a vengeful, spiteful god who meddles

pettily in human affairs. He is Love.

And it is Christ who has shown us

who He really is. With what delicacy, with

what total fidelity Christ fulfilled His

Father's will in every moment. How often

He spoke of His Father. How often He

stepped aside to get a few moments or a

few hours in prayer with Him. And it was

His Father whom He communicated in

every act of his life.

Christ's life is a whole lesson in

perseverance, hard work, and fidelity to

God. He gives us great reason to trust in

God: when it gets tough to fulfill God's

will, when everything else goes against

us, when our feelings flare up or we just

don't feel like giving more is when we can

draw real strength from Christ.

He went through the same in

Gethsemane, on Calvary, when the

Pharisees and so many people stood

against Him and challenged Him he

remained faithful, He gave a little more.

And in these days before Pentecost, the

apostles were beginning to put all this

together. Little do they know it, but they

are about to embark on the greatest

mission mankind has ever known.

AND WE, TOO,

ARE CALLED TO

CONTINUE THIS MISSION.

When the Apostles received their

mission on Ascension Day and when they

received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost,

they were continuing the very same

mission of Jesus Christ on this earth, a

mission that continues to this day. What

an incredible grace we ourselves are

living, we are called to live in the same

period of the Church after Pentecost.

Christ has ascended, the Holy Spirit has

come and the Church is alive. This

mission cannot allow us to remain static.

It entails a real experience of who Christ

is and who God our Father is, and how

much He loves me.

Our Father knows what we want

before we ask Him. As we go about our

day, we ought to have great trust in God

and we must never be afraid to do His will.

Not only will it turn out to be good for us,

but it will be better than we imagined.

We will be living our faith, building our

relationship with God through our actions,

and bringing the message of Christ as a

sweet treasure to those around us.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, give me the grace

always to seek the Father's will with

humility and to trust in You as I strive to

bring the Gospel to all those around me.

ACT OF CONTRITION PRAYER: MY GOD, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee and I detest all my sins because

I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all-good and deserving

of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

While I wait in the grocery checkout line, the glossy, color

magazine covers with their spectacular headlines often catch

my eye, but on this particular day, the cashier drew my

attention. He was short and stocky, with hair that touched his

collar, a scruffy beard, and large gauges in his ears. But one of

his tattoos intrigued me the most. Why would a 20-something

guy have a cuckoo clock covering the inside of his forearm?

“That’s an interesting tattoo,” I said as he scanned my

produce and canned goods.“Thanks.” He smiled. “It’s a replica of

my grandfather’s cuckoo clock that he brought from Germany.”

And then he told me how much he loved his grandfather. How he

enjoyed watching and listening to the cuckoo clock when he was a

child. For the few minutes that he rang up and bagged my

purchases, we connected over our mutual love of cuckoo clocks.

In times past, I was quick to size up another person in the

mall or a restaurant. I’d see someone with tattoos and

immediately place them in a less-than-positive category. I’d

evaluate someone’s choice of clothing. Their odd (in my

opinion) hair color. Pink? Teal? Rainbow highlights, anyone? I’d

approve or not approve someone in passing, almost without

realizing it. And then one day as I mentally assessed someone’s

hairstyle or makeup or who knows what, these words crossed

my mind: made in the image of God. That short phrase threw

a virtual roadblock up in front of my judgmental attitude. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image

of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Every person I cross paths with is made in God’s image.

Yes, they may decide to decorate themselves with piercings or

an unusual hairstyle or outfit. They may wear a lot of eyeliner or

none at all. None of these things negates what God declared:

His image is imprinted on each and every one of them.

Ethnicity doesn’t mar His image, either. Rather, different

nationalities display God’s image in fascinatingly beautiful ways.

As I go through my day, I remind myself that each person I

meet is created in God’s image. Yes, sometimes I may hesitate

over someone’s outer appearance, but God looks at a person’s

heart. And I don’t want to miss an opportunity to connect with

someone on a more personal level because of what they look like.

Now when I see someone with a tattoo, I figure there’s a story

there. If I recognize ink-scrawled words, I’ll ask what they say.

Oftentimes it’s a favorite quote and we can connect because

I’m a quote aficionado. Or sometimes it’s in memory of a loved

one and I can honor that. I might compliment someone’s smile

or hair color or fun shoes — and when their eyes light up, I’m

reminded the image of God shines inside of them.

Dear God, help me look past other people’s outward

appearances — what they’re wearing, how they do their hair —

and consider their hearts. I want to remember that each

person I meet today is made in Your image. May I look for an

opportunity to encourage someone today, reminding them

they are special … maybe even that they are loved by You.
