A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners: This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. For this Sunday, the Church has selected the Gospel from Luke 9: 11B-17. Jesus had been speaking to the crowds and healing some people when the Twelve Apostles asked him to dismiss the crowds because it was coming to the end of the day. The people were hungry and Jesus asked his disciples to give them some food. They had only five loaves and two fish. Just counting the men, there were already about five thousand. Jesus does the multiplication of the loaves and fish, taking from the little that we offer him; the five loaves and two fish, because God can do the impossible. He feeds us when we are hungry for his manifestation in our lives. He first feeds the crowds with his life-giving word, and then he also feeds their faith with the physical manifestation of the loaves and fish. He is showing the Twelve Apostles that it does not depend on their strength or their abilities, but their trust and faith in the saving power of Jesus Christ. They are the ones whom he will send out as witnesses of the marvels of God manifested in Jesus. When all the people had eaten and were satisfied, they collected the leftover fragments and they filled twelve baskets. The Twelve Apostles are what overflows from the miracles of Jesus so that they can be sent - the word “Apostle” means “sent” - to the people who are hungry for the life-saving works of God given through Jesus. So, the celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ is the banquet where we are fed by Christ with the bread of life that transforms our lonely earthly existence, to have communion with the everlasting through Christ; his true presence in the Eucharist and in our lives. -Fr. Basil.

THE SOLEMNITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI

Corpus Christi is the Latin name of our feast of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. While on Holy Thursday, we celebrate Christ’s institu-tion of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist when he gathered his disciples, and transformed the Jew-ish Passover into the Passover of the Lord, the Church decided to emphasize the true presence of Christ in this celebration on a different day. In 1246, Bishop Robert de Thorete of the Belgium diocese of Liège, at the suggestion of St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, convened a synod and insti-tuted the celebration of the feast. From Liège, the celebration spread to other parishes. On Septem-ber 8, 1264, Pope Urban IV issued the papal bull "Transiturus," which established the Feast of Cor-pus Christi as a universal feast of the Church, to be celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday (or the Sunday after). At the request of Pope Urban IV, St. Thomas Aquinas composed the office (the official prayers of the Church) for the feast. This office is widely considered one of the most beautiful in the tradi-tional Roman Breviary (the official prayer book of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours), and it is the source of the famous Eucharistic hymns Pange Lingua Gloriosi and Tantum Ergo Sacra-mentum.
