Critical reading is thinking about what the text is saying, not just absorbing words.
It is an analytic activity. The reader rereads a text to identify
patterns of elements throughout the discussion.

Make Inferences (AKA: Read between the lines)
Making inferences, or observations, about text means actively utilizing prior knowledge and experiences to create meaning.
Tips for reading critically
Dear Jane,
I’m sorry for not calling you back earlier this week. I’ve been kind of busy, and I’ve been doing a lot of thinking.
We’ve had some fun times together. Like that time we went to the boardwalk and our Tuesday movie nights. We were just starting to get to know each other…but now we know more.
I like going off the beaten path. You like being on time. I like leftovers. You like to “eat right.” I think you get the idea.
If I don’t call you back next time, I figure you’ll know why.
So long - John

Predict the next step.
After reading a section of text, try to guess what is going to happen next.
Making predictions when you read isn’t very different then making predictions when you watch movies.
Tips for reading critically
The scene: Three friends are walking a trail near their cabin. It is night time, the moon is full, and they have been trying to find the dock to the nearby lake. One of the friends tells a story about a family who went missing from the cabin.
Suddenly, the trio realizes that they are lost in the dense woods. A little bit panicked and spooked by the story, one of the friends says they should split up to try and find the way back to the house.

Revise your thinking!
Movies and stories often utilize plot twists to keep the reader on their toes. This also forces you to actively think about what is happening in the story.
Tips for reading critically
Jane: “Guys, I’m freaking out. I’m pretty sure something just touched my shoulder. Can we please just go back? What if we split up? I’ll go back the way we came, and you guys can try this other path.”
Kelly: “Jane, that’s a horrible idea! Let’s all go back. It’s a good thing we brought these flashlights, charged our cell phones, and wore sneakers. Let’s look for the dock tomorrow.
The girls agree and turn back and navigate their way back to the cabin safely. They lock all the doors and windows and then make popcorn and watch Mean Girls.

Each year, thousands of people throughout the United States go shopping on Black Friday. While called Black Friday, many stores now open the Thursday before and keep their sales going throughout the weekend. These earlybird shoppers often develop a plan of attack to get to each sale and complete their Christmas shopping. However, even the best shopping plan can be ruined due to unforeseen circumstances such as terrible traffic, overly aggressive customers, and a Thanksgiving dinner coma.
