Speaking of sports. Did you know the most common injuries found in sports related injuries are orofacial?

Statistics reveal that nearly 5 million teeth are accidentally knocked out (avulsed), of which over 200,000 teeth are lost yearly in sporting activities. A child can collide

'-----'''''-'''''''''---' head-to-head on the playing field or a baseball bat swings onto a player's front teeth. It's not just sports that cause avulsed teeth. Running children fall face first onto the sidewalk or a swimmer hits the bottom of a pool. All of these accidents cause lost permanent teeth. These facts together with the several sports related injuries we have already seen this season, we thought it would be a good time to review Dental Emergency First Aid. What to do when.•.

Knocked out permanent tooth:

If the tooth is loose, push it back into its original position, bite down on clean gauze or cloth so the tooth does not move and call your dentist or visit the emergency room

immediately.

If the tooth is knocked out pick the tooth up by the crown, NOT by the root (handling the root may damage I

the cells necessary for bone re-attachment and ~I hinder replacing the tooth), only rinse, with 3m's ~. solution (see below), low fat milk, saline solution or saliva, enough to debride the root from any debris, and reinsert the tooth. Gently bite down on clean gauze or cloth and call your dentist immediately. If the tooth cannot be replaced in its socket on site, do not let the tooth dry out. Do NOT clean or touch it too much. Place it in a "Save-ATooth"* solution or a container with a lid, using the low fat

milk, saline solution or saliva. Call your dentist immediately. The length of time before a tooth is reimplanted and how it is transported to the dentist are crucial in successfully saving and reimplanting the tooth.

*3m Save-A-Tooth or EMT Tooth Saver is an emergency tooth preserving system that is a convenient and effective addition to your first aid kit. This product will help protect, nourish and revive knocked out teeth and increases a successful reimplantation by your dentist up to 90%. It is the only patented tooth preservation system approved by the American Dental Association. If you have difficulty finding this product, it can be ordered through "Smart

Practice," or give us a call and we will order one for you.

Broken Tooth: Rinse the dirt from the injured area with warm water...place a cold compress over the face in the area of the injury...find and save any fragments ... see the dentist IMMEDIATELY

Possible Broken Jaw:

If a fractured jaw is suspected, try to keep the jaws from moving by using a towel, tie or handkerchief.. .then take the person to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek:

Apply ice to bruised areas... ifthere is bleeding apply fmn, but gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth. If the bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes or if it cannot be controlled by simple pressure, take the person to a hospital emergency room.

The best way to avoid significant injury is with prevention. Custom moutbguards can avoid many sports related tooth injuries.

Although inexpensive mouthguards are available over-the-counter, they are not durable, often resulting in tears, holes or a loose fit. Health is jeopardized with an ill-fitting appliance, also diminishing compliance. New guards are needed and unaware parents are put in the situation of purchasing another one, usually last minute, rushing to the store, to get home to complete an inadequate fabrication, or just having to go without one!

Custom guards offer better health due to proper fit, which maintains correct position within the mouth without the athlete having to bite down. Constant clenchi~g is harmful to the teeth, jaw and tempromandibular joint. Custom guards also result in less interference with breathing and speech and will not harden or creep over time. The increased durability and comfort often result in better compliance.

It takes two visits to make a custom guard. The first visit, impressions of the teeth are taken, and can even be done along with another appointment. The second visit, the guard is fitted and if necessary, adjusted.

Care of a mouthguard is simple. After wearing rinse it with cold water and scrub gently with a toothbrush. Keep it stored in the container provided with your guard. Do not place it in hot water or store in a hot environment.

Remember, be true to your teeth, or they will be false to you!
