a courtesy call on the Director-General, Mr Ernest Thompson to express his sincere appreciation to the Trust for the decision to build 40 Police Community Stations for the Ghana Police Service. Mr Alhassan gave a vivid picture of the dire need for Police office and residential accommodation. he implementation of OBS application which is expected to drive efficiency, create a Wide Area Network (WAN), improve data integrity to enhance service delivery in SSNIT is on course.

All the anticipated targets for success and projected “red flags” for redress are on course. A project of such magnitude is expected to have some level of challenges with implementation; and this was rightly projected for in the Action Plan.

During the peak period of contribution collections, the Executives led by Director-General, inspected OBS work flow in some Accra Offices. The Executives took the opportunity to encourage staff to work hard for the success of the project.

Highlights

• The OBS environment successfully ran the first pension payroll for August 2015.

• Payments for fresh pensioners in the OBS is in progress., it is believed that all fresh pensioners will be paid by the end of September 2015.

• Staff are to note that some Employers were on time at the point of validation in the OBS environment but could not go through. The penalty fears must be allayed while they await a favourable management policy decision on that soon.

• Staff are to encourage Employers to submit their contribution reports by the end of each month for validation before the peak period in order to avoid rush and queues.

• A total of one hundred (100) employers had been trained to transact business on the SSNIT Portal. The objective of the training was to get more employers to submit their contribution Reports online for validation.

he Operational Business Suite (OBS) is a developed Information Technology (IT) system expected to

bring about systems efficiency and improve data integrity and enhance service delivery to all stakeholders. The Social Security administration started in 1965 by Act 279 but by far, became very popular as a result of the upsurge of SSNIT Flats in the 1980s. The real

OBS APPLICATION WILL LIFT THE TRUST TO ITS DESTINATION

By Sylvester Teprey, Corporate Affairs Dept.,

estate development project by SSNIT in the 1980s raised her image to glorious heights.

The Initial Record ChallengesThe PNDC Law 247 of 1991 was the beginning of pension revolution for the Trust, since it was the period in time when monthly pension payment began. With the advent of monthly pension payment, there was the need for good record keeping. SSNIT went through manual hand typewritten contribution compilation, passbooks usage, before settling on Information technology (IT) application. The introduction of IT marked the beginning of SSNIT data transformation. There was District Operating System (DOS) which was internally developed in 1998.This was changed to ``BOS‘‘Branch Operating system and later enhanced , hence The Enhanced Branch Operations system (E-BOs).E-BOS came as a great relief to the Trust when it was introduced. With the advent of the OBS more efficient operations system is anticipated. The OBS application, is however supposed to be

phenomenal.

This writer believes everybody should be excited and put all hands on deck to welcome OBS. This generation, witnessing OBS application, must count themselves blessed for being implementers of this transformation in the Trust. Those of us who were in this system for a while, know where we are coming from, what the Trust went through to get to this far. This history making transformation must be embraced wholeheartedly and all staff must unreservedly get on board to ensure the success of this project.

The Core Business of The Trust The question is ``what is the core business of SSNIT? ``The core business is to pay benefits in terms of pension, or lump sum, invalidity, death and survivors and of late Emigration. In the eyes of the general working population, the Trust is seen, by the value and the promptness of pension payment. Whether we agree or not this is the core business of SSNIT. Any other activity we undertake is supplementary and only supports SSNIT to meet this objective of benefit payment.

The benefit payment could be referred to as the downstream business while the midstream business could be seen as dealing with the Employees and Employers in collecting contributions, investing the contributions and ultimately paying the pensioners.

The `` IT” is supposed to develop a specific software capable of enhancing the work of the organization, help preserve data and make it available to the organization any how it is needed, when it is needed

Page 7: SSNIT MONTHLY NEWS SHEET · PDF fileNEWS SHEET AUGUST 2015 EDITION ... OBS ROLL OUT ON ... ``The core business is to pay benefits in terms of pension, or lump sum,

and where we need it speedily and efficiently. ` IT` is therefore expected to drive the pension operational system for effective delivery of the various pension products.

The Corporate Affairs Department is to communicate freely with all the internal and external stakeholders.

The Relevance of the OBS ApplicationSo what is the relevance of the Operational Business Suite (OBS)? This is a software and `IT’ infrastructure which is expected to transform the operations of SSNIT, changing staff mode of work, introducing speed into all compliance and benefits processing, enhancing accuracy in SSNIT operations, defining staff responsibilities at every stage of staff involvement and network all SSNIT offices.

The Expected Transformation by The OBSExpectations from the OBS applications are great. The major one by the general public is the positioning of the Trust in their mind as ``efficient and prompt pension administrator.” This will attractively enhance SSNIT image and thereby increase the coverable workforce outside the formal sector into the scheme.

I can see with my tomorrow`s eyes, that the introduction of `OBS` application will result in prompt and efficient system for SSNIT which will eventually lead to millions more workers being covered within a few years. Doubt me at your own peril. This will mean opening new Branches to accommodate the inflow. Both the `hide and seek’ prospective employers and workers outside the formal sector will rush to join the scheme. The communications team- Corporate Affairs as well as marketing- will be leading the way in the promotional drive initially, but after some time simple `word of mouth ‘ reference will significantly increase membership.

The introduction of the portal and the kiosk is expected to be a positive innovation in support for the midstream customers –employers, voluntary contributors and members. The downstream customers (who are mainly pensioners and prospective pensioners) will equally benefit immensely.

Though not a soothsayer, it can be foreseen that all things being normal and assuming that Ghana`s economy improves strongly into the middle income status and with the kind of leadership SSNIT now have, a major transformation is on its way. If `OBS` application is fully implemented the

Kiosk and the portal shall change SSNIT operations for the better. This writer shall not be surprised if the `kiosk` concept could develop into ATM concept one day. This will mean pensioners could receive their monthly pensions from the ATM. The employers could be in the comfort of their offices and homes and process their contribution reports and pay at any SSNIT accredited banks around them.

The OBS application represents the single most cardinal initiative taken by the Trust to improve our operational efficiency and enhance service delivery through the application of technology. As usual, with a project of such massive magnitude, we are bound to experience implementation challenges. There is every assurance that the OBS Implementation Team/The OBS Technical Team and the Vendors are working tirelessly to resolve these problems promptly to enable the organization derive the full benefit from the new system.

As a visionaryThere is no doubt in my mind about the efficacy of the OBS. The application of this system will raise the image of SSNIT positively and re-position SSNIT as prompt Tier 1 Pension Payment Administrator, staff efficiency will be very high, several prospective employers will voluntarily rush to be covered onto the scheme, new Branches may be opened to accommodate the new desire and Pension processing time will be shortened . These and more will be the sign-posts of the success of the OBS cruize.Let us all join the ride.

his is the second and last part of the above feature which was started in July2015.This last part educates us on how to overcome and defeat anger.7. RelaxAngry people let little things bother them. If you learn to calm down, you’ll realize that there is no real need to get upset, and you’ll have fewer angry episodes.

Regular exercise can help you relax in tense situations. When possible, go for a walk, or stretch and breathe deeply whenever you start to feel upset.

You will also feel more relaxed when you get enough sleep and eat a healthy diet.

Dehydration can often lead to irritability too, so keep hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water.

8. Build TrustAngry people can be cynical. They can believe that others do things on purpose to annoy or frustrate them, even before anything happens. However, people often focus less on you than you might think!

Build trust with friends and colleagues. That way, you will be less likely to get angry with them when something goes wrong. You will also be less likely to attribute the problem to malicious intent on their part.

To build trust, be honest with people. Explain your actions or decisions when you need to, and always keep your word. If you do this consistently, people will learn that they can trust you. They will also follow your lead, and you will learn that you can trust them in return.

9. Listen EffectivelyMiscommunication contributes to frustrating situations. The better you listen to what someone says, the easier it is to find a resolution that does not involve an angry response.

Improve your active listening skills. When others are speaking, focus on what they are saying, and do not get distracted by formulating your response before they have finished.

10. Be AssertiveRemember, the word is “assertive,” not “aggressive.” When you are aggressive, you focus on winning. You care little for others’ feelings, rights, and needs. When you are assertive, you focus on balance. You are honest about what you want, and you respect the needs of others.

If you are angry, it is often difficult to express yourself clearly. Learn to assert yourself and let other people know your expectations, boundaries, and issues. When you do, you will find that you develop self-confidence, gain respect, and improve your relationships.

11. Live Each Day as if it is Your LastLife is short. If you spend all of your time getting angry, you are going to miss the many joys and surprises that life offers.

Think about how many times your anger has destroyed a relationship, or caused you to miss a happy day with friends and family. That is time that you will never get back.

However, you can prevent this from happening again – the choice is yours.

12. Forgive and ForgetTo ensure that you make long-term changes, you need to forgive people who have angered you.

It’s not easy to forget past resentments, but the only way to move on is to let go of these feelings. (Depending on what or who is at the root of your anger, you may have to seek a professional’s help to achieve this.)

So, start today. Make amends with one person that you have hurt through your anger. It might be difficult, but you will feel better afterwards. Plus, you will be one step closer to healing the relationship.
