SSDB Launch @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE Singapore is our home where living together in peace and harmony is valued and important. We have and continue to be a melting pot of people of different races and cultural backgrounds. It is important to maintain and preserve social harmony in Singapore. How can we hope to achieve it? We believe that the more we learn and understand one’s cultural background and practices, the more we will accept and respect one another, living together harmoniously in a diverse community. The children of Faith Kindergarten have embarked on an exciting journey to learn about the importance of racial harmony, the different racial communities in Singapore and the roles they can play to preserve social harmony. Join us on our journey to spreading the message of understanding and unity in the community!

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Unity in Diversity through Food We love to eat and Singapore has many different types of food unique to each culture and racial group. Children at Faith Kindy explored the different types of food in our community, the types of cutlery used and the dining etiquette we need to observe. By understanding the different practices, we learn to respect cultures different from us.

Use of cutlery and learning of dining etiquette Part 1 - We invited Auntie Ami from our community to share with us about Malay food and some of the etiquette we need to observe when eating with our Malay friends. At the end of the demonstration we had a Q & A session. Some of the interesting questions asked by our friends were, “why do some of our Malay friends use a mat instead of a table for meals”? “What happens if I am a left hander, do I really need to use my right hand to eat”? It was definitely an eye opening session for us!

Auntie Ami demonstrated to us a simple set up of a Malay meal, how one should eat and the washing of hands using the ‘air koboan’ before and after a meal.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Unity in Diversity through Food Festive Snack - Food is an important part of culture, especially on special occasions such as celebrations. As part of our learning experience, we worked in pairs and made our very own Honey Cornflakes Cookies. We brought home our cookies to share with our families and friends as well.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Unity in Diversity through Food Indian Food Culture – ‘Chapatti’ is also known as an unleavened flatbread. Our Indian friends enjoy this bread as much as ‘naan’ and ‘roti prata’. It is a simple dough made from wholemeal flour, salt, water and a little oil. The dough is then cooked on a traditional frying pan called a 'tava'. Our teacher, Ms Pereira prepared the chapatti dough and fried the chapatti for us to try. She brought her own 'tava' to use. We too had our chance to “make” some chapatti. That’s us “rolling out the dough” and “frying and tossing” the chapatti on the 'tava'!

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Unity in Diversity through Clothing & Footwear Each culture has its own set of traditional clothing. Exploring the traditional fashion in our community is a great way to celebrate the unique characteristics of different cultures. After exploring the different prints and designs of the traditional clothes and footwear, we designed our own Indian sandals with intricate patterns and created pieces of art with the Batik technique. Batik is one of the signature art of the Malay culture. The older Malay ladies often have batik prints on their clothes. Batik is also part of the Singapore's culture as even the female flight crew of Singapore Airlines are clad in elegant batik.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Unity in Diversity through Clothing & Footwear The Faith Kindy children did a simple version of Batik printing by using wax crayons on cloth instead of hot liquid wax. We are all very proud of our vibrant batik pieces! You can bet we will be looking at the different traditional clothings with a new appreciation.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Unity in Diversity through Celebrations and Decorations Celebrations bring the community together - In Singapore, we take part in or experience many different celebrations throughout the year. The different decorations used is a major highlight in each celebration. The Faith Kindy children discussed about the different celebrations in Singapore.

As an extension to their learning, the children made a simple Chinese New Year decoration.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE : Reaching Out to the Community (Part One – Emergency Helpers)

Now that we know more about the people in the community, besides practicing tolerance and appreciating our diversity, we are now ready to connect closer with our community. How can we do that?

Using ideas from our community partners, (Singapore Red Cross and Kidz Meadow, jointly launched the Red Cross Junior Club and its holistic curriculum - Project C.A.R.E ) the children discussed and explored ways to serve the community. As a tie in with our school’s annual fire drill, the children and teachers decided that one way to serve the community is to be prepared in an emergency. Another way is to reflect and think of ways in how we can show care to others in the community. We want to empower our children with life skills so as to be a part of a resilient community.

Children reflect and share about ways to show care to others using the SSDB pledge cards.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: Reaching Out to the Community (Part Two – Games Bring People Together)

We believe that games can bring a community together. On 5 July, children from Faith Kindergarten invited their peers from AGAPE Little Uni to join them for a Mini Games Day. The children quickly warmed up to one another and invited their “new friends” to try out the games. What better way to make new friends and spend a fun filled day!

Let the games begin!

Children played traditional games such as hopscotch and zero point. The games also emphasised the importance of cooperation and team work.

We were also blessed with many volunteers from our school and church community who gave of their time, smiles and joy to help at each game station.

Our happy volunteers.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: A Reflection (Part One - Quilt Making)

Singapore is often described as a melting pot of diverse cultures. Yet, we are also a community that strives to preserve its unique culture and traditions, and appreciate and respect that of others. In March 2018, the children of Faith Kindergarten began a journey of learning about the different cultures in Singapore as part of the Start Small Dream Big project.

In Chinese tradition, the Chinese patchwork quilt(百 纳 被)is made up of many pieces of cloths gathered from family and friends. The putting together of the pieces signify abundant blessings and the different relationships with one another.

Two of our lovely grandmothers showed us how to prepare the pieces of fabrics which the children had collected for the project.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: A Reflection (Part One - Quilt Making)

The children collected a variety of fabrics with different colours and textures. They worked together to trace and cut the different pieces of cloth. Singaporeans and people living in Singapore are just like the different pieces of cloth – colourful and diverse.

SSDB @ Faith Kindergarten – United we are ONE: A Reflection (Part One - Quilt Making)

After cutting the fabrics into different shapes, the children joined the pieces of cloth together. The use of glue to join the pieces of cloth signifies the people of Singapore coming together as one.

Next, the children sewed the joined pieces of cloth together.

The threads represent the family relationships and friendships we hold dear to us and the ties that binds us, Singaporeans, together.

From this activity, the Faith Kindergarten children learned to be appreciative of what they have. They also learned to cooperate and worked together to complete the quilt with the help of some of their grandparents. The pieces of cloth sewn together, made a beautiful quilt that brings warmth and well wishes to the users. Similarly, the completed quilt is just like Singapore, a tight-knit community that values one another, that works hard to stay together, United as ONE.

As we come to an end of our project, children of Faith Kindergarten warmly wishes Singapore to remain united and treasure the ties we have with one another.
