GENERAL COMMITTEE Leigh Thomas – Staci Cox – Mel Palmer –

CLERKS OF COURSE

Hi,

Our March Carrum Regatta was a great day, with a very motivated turnout and some close competition. We ran events right through to after 5pm. There was a bit of wind at times, however the drivers and skiers took it their stride, with the BBQ helpers working especially hard to keep things alight and the crowd fed – thank you.

As always, the time keepers, clerks of course, set up helpers and participants all got together in SSBOC fashion to make the day sensational.

The day gave us a few close finishes; Syndicate taking out Didgeridoo by a nose, Gun Seacraft taking out Mygrain by a nose, and Aces looking really strong just to run out of fuel with 50m to go, allowing Daddy-O to streak home for the class win! Rumour has it that Andy slept with his medal that night!

For a few of us we went home saying ‘well there’s always next time!’ - Well next time is only weeks away - MUL-WALA * MULWALA * MULWALA.

We expect a great weekend at Mulwala with everything pretty well in place to get started on time and keep it moving. The aim is simply to get through as many events as possible over the two days and give everyone a go.

First up will be Boat A Kana with each boat able to run twice in the 6cyl and V8 for both men’s and women’s - so pick your best 2 boys and best 2 girls – the entry forms will be out early so fill them in while your setting up to help get things underway.

If last year and the much discussion since is any indication, the Family Marathon and Plank trials are going to be popular. The Queenslanders started this plank thing off and the Vic’s have decided to take it to them – with a few NSW’s mixed in, and in the words of Adrian Peel – this could become a ‘state of origin’ event!

With heaps of social time on Friday & Saturday night at The Mulwala Waterski Club, and two full days of hot competition we are going to have a ball!

See you there!

Regards,

Jon Helmore

Some things to remember about the regatta.

You must have the correct current Insurance.

You must be a financial member to drive a boat or to ski.

Do not launch your boat if you don’t comply with the above rules.

Anyone who launches a boat must pay a Launch Fee $50.

Speed in any event is restricted to 69 MPH (60Knotts) as per insurance.

Junior Skiers can ski in their age group and one age group up. If you are an Un-der 16 you can enter Under 16 and Open Ski. It goes on what age you are on the day.

All competitors must attend Briefing.

Regarding missed starts in Junior Events, if a skier does miss their start, the driv-er is to idle back to them pulling in the rope as quick as possible and make sure their skier is safe. The other skier may continue AS LONG AS IT’S SAFE TO PRO-CEED, you must acknowledge that you have seen the skier in the water and complete your time trial. The skier that missed the start will get another run at the end of the heats for that age group. If it is not safe for the successful skier to pass, the driver must raise his hand and they will be allowed to restart. This is to try and prevent having young skiers doing multiple starts unnecessarcerilly.

If you have any questions about the above rule, please bring them up at briefing.

Another great Carrum Regatta is

done and dusted, although it wasn’t

as warm as we would like it to be, it

was still a great day. There was noth-

ing luke warm about the action out

on the water, with a number of

‘photo finish’s’ it really came down

to the wire in some events.

In Open Women’s, Chris towed

Courtney and Lisa to First and Sec-

ond respectively , Courtney’s time

was 1.02.56 and Lisa’s 1.02.75. This

just shows what a fast and consistent

boat Gremlin is.

The Six Cylinder Multi Carb clash

between Syndicate with Jake skiing

and Didgeridoo with Boxy out the

back was another close one with less

the 0.5 second in it.

Andy McLean’s win in 6 Cylinder was

a ‘Bradbury Win’ if there ever was

one. James in Aces had the race all

sewn up until he ran out of fuel with-

in metre’s of the finish line and had

to watch as Andy came across the

line for the win.

I think the day was enjoyed by all

who attended, it was great to see

some old faces coming back to enjoy

what we have to offer.

Big Thanks to everyone who helped

out on the BBQ, especially George

who put in a fairly lengthy shift cook-

ing up a storm, thanks to the Time

Keeper’s and Starter’s and Mel log-

ging all the results as we go.

Another safe and successful regatta,

congratulations to all and we’ll do it

all again and more in a couple of

weeks time at the magnificent Mul-

wala Regatta.

See you all there

The weather gods produced a really hot weekend for the participants of the Robinvale 80 this year. Some of us relished in the heat and some of us not so much. My apologies if I have missed anyone because apparently I did in the Southern 80 write up. (Apparently it's not nice to forget your sister-in-law so I won't this time for sure!). THE LAUBS Another very busy weekend for the Laub family. Lucky Lauby's got a big bus to carry all his trophies home from the Ski Races. Under 6ltr Inboard Social - 2nd for Darren Skiing behind Monop-oly with Rob Bertram Observing. Junior Dash on Saturday afternoon saw the boys score a 1st place behind the Chief with Darren Driving, Rob Observing & Tate Skiing with his mate Jake. U10 Boys - KADE scored himself a 3rd Trophy with Dad Darren driving & Rob Observing. (Their own private Observer!) Junior Boys Expert - Originally a 1st place for team Chief with a great time of just over 36 minutes but then a dis-qualification saw them hand back the trophies at the end of the day. Never mind boys you'll get some more straight back at Mildura.

THE GRECHS Open Womens Social - Mel & Courtney did an awesome job skiing and scored a 2nd place behind Never Gro-Up with Dean doing the observ-ing. MOC Expert - 4th behind Sonic Boom with mum Jenny driving and Dean Needham doing the Observing.

THE CLANCYS It was Number 1's all over the place for the Clancy Kids. Sub Junior Boys Social - 1st to Jake behind the Contractor Sub Junior Boys Expert - You guessed it .... 1st to Jake be-hind Southern Force 60mph Social - 1st to Jaymi behind Burn N Wood with Kris Freeman driving & Leigh Freeman Observing. Junior Girls Expert - 1st to Jaymi behind The Contractor with Mum Lisa doing the Observing Veteran Womens - 3rd to Lisa behind The Contractor .... maybe The Contractor was sick of winning. THE CARNES Sub Junior Girls Social - 2nd to Summer & Ruby behind Carneage with Dad Adam doing the driving. Sub Junior Girls Expert - 4th to Summer behind Carneage with Dad Ad-am having some plastic outboard boat problems along the way but still managing to finish.

Veteran Womens - 1st for Bernie (me) behind Boystress. No it's not a misprint! Yay!!

CAM REID 70mph Social - Drove Now or Never but had a DNF or more likely a DNS as they couldn't pull their skiers up. 70mph Expert - Was meant to drive again but because he cracked it over not starting the day before he decid-ed to hit the beverages early on Saturday and forgot to stop so was unable to participate on Sunday due to his 'bad' breath! NAILED Well it was basically a CRAP weekend for Nailed. Leigh Thomas Driving and Leigh McDonald Skiing. 70mph Social - DNF Senior Social Mens - DNS 70mph Expert - an Oopsy DNF Even with the weekend not going to plan, the Nailed team still finished off on a high when they were presented with "The Clint Middleton Trophy" for fastest Wooden Boat - Southern 80, 2018. Leigh's face was beaming and he looked so happy and proud. Thanks to Tony and Rhonda Middleton for making the trip to Robinvale to present Nailed with the trophy.
