TRANSCRIPT

  • Welcome Audience

  • Protection in space

  • CHALLENGESReduced GravityLack of air pressureExtreme temperatureSolar radiation Ultra violet radiation

  • How do you feel in the sunlight?Warm!

  • Why? The Sun gives off:LightHeat

  • This heat and light is called Solar Radiation:heat and light from the Sun

  • Solar Radiation is reflected and absorbed

  • Reflection:heat and light bounce off a surface

  • Absorption:heat and light are taken in by a surface

  • Solar radiation warms the Earth

  • Earths atmosphere protects us from most solar radiation

  • Astronauts need extra protection in space from the extreme temperatures

  • Why are space suits white?

  • Which envelope was warmer?The dark envelope!Why?

  • Dark colors absorb light:take heat inget hotter faster

  • Light colors reflect light:Heat bounces offStay cooler

  • This is why astronauts wear light colored space suits!

  • Did You Know?Space suits also have built-in air conditioning to help keep astronauts cool!

  • DESIGN

The EMU spacesuit has11 to 19 layers of protection to a thickness from about 5-8 mm.

In its 2010 version, it consists of an assembly of 18 components produced by some 80 companies and assembled in the office headquarters in Houston, Texas.

The size of the different elements varies between 8 mm and 76.2 cm for the water supply.

A combination EMU requires about two and a half years of work about 5000 hours.

  • Different Layers of protection DPressure suit- Combination of number of layers including comfort layer

    Protective Layer TMG-Thermal micrometeoroid garments

  • Different layers of protection

  • Function of layers of pressure suit:ComfortInsulationMaintaining pressureCooling and VentilationEvacuation of perspiration

  • Materials used for pressure suit:

  • Materials and Why1.Comfort layer: (inner most) Made of nylon thread Rot proof Highly resistant Flexible Light weight insulation

  • Materials used for pressure suit2.LCVG-Liquid Cooling and ventilation garmentsMade of Spandex or lycra -Perspiration is evacuated through it.3.Pressurized Layer-Made of nylon coated urethaneCovered by Dacron fabric -to maintain structural layer pressurized

  • Materials used for pressure suit4.Outer most layerNon-slip nylon covered neoprene -Spongy material insulation

  • Function of protective layersThermal InsulationProtection against Cosmic rays Micro-meteoroids Abrasion , wear etc

  • Materials used for Protective Layer:TMG-Thermal Micro-meteoroid garments1.TMG insulating layer: Made of Aluminized Mylar -Thermal Insulation - Protection against cosmic rays -Protection against micro meteroids(when contains nylon)

  • Materials used for Protective Layer:2.TMG Outer Layer: Ortho Fabric(blend of Gortex , Kevlar and Nomex )

-Protection against abrasion , wear, impact, tearing etc.

  • So .

  • Why Synthetic and Metal fibres?

-Prevention of mold or bacterial growth
