Another Ebola battle wonOn January 18, the World Health Organization andthe Malian government declared Mali free of theEbola virus disease. Mali is the third country afterNigeria and Senegal to become free of the deadlydisease. A country should have had no new cases ofEbola for a continuous period of 42 days, which is acycle of two incubation periods of 21 days, for it tobe declared free of the virus. This is a particularlyremarkable achievement for Mali, given the fact thatit shares a porous, 800-km-long border with Guinea. After all, on December 26, 2013, the first case ofEbola virus that led to the unprecedented crisis inWest Africa was found in a remote village in Guinea. Also, Mali became the sixth West African country torecord a case of Ebola when a two-year-old girl withsymptoms arrived from Guinea in October last year.Even in this moment of victory, Mali has to rememberthat it has now only won a battle. As long as the waragainst Ebola remains unfinished in West Africa as awhole, Mali must not lower its guard as new casescan always come up. After all, the country onceexperienced a similar situation in November 2014when it came so close to being declared free of theEbola virus, before a “second wave” of infectionsdelayed such a declaration. The good news is thatthere has been a “turning point” in the Ebola crisiswith the number of new cases reported in the threeworst-affected countries — Liberia, Sierra Leone andGuinea — falling in recent weeks. According to theWHO, as on January 21, 2015 all of 8,683 peoplehave died of Ebola, and the number of cases so far ismore than 21,759.In all, if only eight cases and six deaths occurred inMali, which are fewer than Nigeria with 20 casesand eight deaths, the reason for that is theunprecedented efforts to contain the disease from thevery beginning. Starting with tracing every personwho had come in contact with the sick girl on herjourney from Guinea and, at one point, placing nearly600 people under daily observation, the government, health workers and citizens acted aggressively tostamp out the disease before it turned into a crisissituation. The massive public awareness campaign, monitoring along the border, a fully geared publichealth system and precautions taken by people ontheir own helped Mali to stamp out the virus. Ofcourse, the sombre awareness of the crisis playingout in the three worst-affected countries had a majorrole to play in this process. India has a lesson to learnfrom the way Nigeria and Mali have handled theEbola outbreaks. Though some vital precautionarysteps were taken, the small number of centres thatare capable of testing for the virus and the lack ofquarantine facilities at major airports indicate a lowlevel of preparedness to counter the virus.
