QUOTE OF THE

DAYEknath Khadse’s fall, it inflicts political damage on the party too..?

In resigning from the Maharashtra cabinet, Eknath Khadse has done the honourable thing. Now the onus is on the state government to probe the allegations against Khadse and indict or exonerate him, based on the findings. Over the past few weeks, Khadse, once a chief ministerial aspirant, and then the de-facto No.2 in the Maharashtra government, has witnessed a pre-cipitous fall in his fortunes. An ethical hacker who ac-cessed Pakistani telecom servers alleged that Khadse’s phone number figured multiple times in the call detail records of gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s wife. Khadse claimed that he was not using that number. Then an aide, Gajanan Patel, was arrested for allegedly de-manding a Rs30 crore bribe to transfer ownership of a plot of land in Thane. The last straw was the revela-tion that Khadse’s wife and son-in-law had purchased a three-acre plot near Pune for Rs3.75 crore when the market rate was nearly Rs31 crore. Soon the indus-tries ministry questioned this land deal claiming that the plot was acquired by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. Along the way, a number of other acts by Khadse as revenue minister revealed his overt interest in that land deal. The charges against Khadse are very serious and there was no way the central leadership could have overlooked the allega-tions, unlike those made against Sushma Swaraj or Vasundhara Raje. It involved corruption, impropriety, conflict of interest, and connections with an under-world figure. The BJP had stormed to power in Maha-rashtra after the Congress-NCP combine found itself enmeshed in a string of corruption scandals. Along-side economic growth and creating jobs, a tough stance on anti-corruption continues to be among Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s primary slogans. It was easier for the Prime Minister to support Swaraj and Raje because the charges against them were rel-atively minor and were restricted to conflict of inter-est and impropriety. There was no evidence that they had benefitted from their alleged links to Lalit Modi. But in Khadse’s case, the link between his revenue ministry and the shady land deals of his inner circle was too blatant to be condoned. By forcing Khadse to quit promptly, the BJP can also blunt the attacks it has faced from ally, Shiv Sena, and the opposition parties. Khadse’s exit was also necessary because of the crucial portfolios he held. The state is in the grip of drought conditions and an embattled agriculture minister can hardly be expected to provide a reprieve to farmers or the rural populace.

Favouring consolidation in the public sector bank-ing space, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Mon-day said the government as of now is looking only at SBI merging 5 subsidiaries as well as Bharatiya Mahila Bank with itself and a decision on this will be taken soon. “We are looking at SBI (proposal) at the moment. It is with the government and (it) will respond. The government’s policy by and large supports consolidation. I have indicated that in the budget itself,” he said after a meeting with the heads of public sector banks and financial institu-tions here. “We are expecting (approval) shortly,” he said when asked as to how soon the government nod is expected. Last month, SBI cleared proposal for merger of subsidiary banks and Bharatiya Ma-hila Bank. It sought government’s approval for the merger. The left-arm pac-er, who has wowed crick-et fans on both sides of the six-year span in which he spent time in jail, spent endless hours sulk-

But now that Aam-er is up and running and the worst behind him, all that he needs to do is keep knocking off the barricades that are left in his journey. There were genuine doubts wheth-er Aamer, who served a custodial sentence in UK

Aamer has been named in the Paki-stan’s touring party for a four-Test series starting next month, and all eyes will be on the extremely talented pacer who has fought all odds to make it back to international cricket. Some men are destined for greatness, and some men work really hard for it. But Aamer’s case has been typically different. Things looked bright for Negi as the big-money purchase came a day after he was selected for the Indian squads for Asia Cup and World T20 tournaments. Cut to June, Negi wears the face of a man far from

the one who was grabbed all the limelight before the start of the lucrative tournament. The Delhi all-rounder had a disap-pointing season in IPL 9 after getting to bowl only 54 balls in nine match-es this season. With the bat, he managed only 57 runs with a best of 19 this season. Negi was warm-ing the benches for the most part of the season in which his team finished fifth. After not being able to do justice to his price tag, Negi blamed the

Delhi High Court on Mon-day dismissed the peti-tion of two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar seeking directions to Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to hold selec-tion trials to decide who will represent India in the 74 Kg freestyle catego-ry at the Rio Olympics. Justice Manmohan said though Sushil Kumar is a “legendary” wrestler, but WFI’s contention that Narsingh Pancham Yadav is better in 74 kg category cannot be termed as “un-reasonable” or “perverse”. The court also observed that Sushil Kumar has himself participated in previous Olympics with-out going through selec-tion trials before the sport-ing event. Meanwhile, the High Court issued notice to WFI Vice President

from health issues related to his age. He was 104 when

the former Mr. Universe passed

awayincluding poverty and a stint in prison, to achieve bodybuilding glory. He won the Mr Universe ti-tle in London in 1952 and returned a hero to India, where many took up bodybuilding inspired by his success. He also won several titles when competing in the Asian Bodybuilding Champi-onships. He was known

as the “Pocket Hercules” due to his 4 foot, 11 inch (150 centimeter) frame. Aich often told his fans that the secret to his long life was his ability to take his troubles lightly and remain happy during dif-ficult times. That, and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish kept him healthy, he said.

there is an opportunity for him to give it a shot, he would grab it. And by opportunity, he means the final Olympic Qualifier in Venezuela, which has been thrown open to pro boxers from around the world. “I won’t at all be happy, if he wants to go there. As I see it, there is no time. Of course he is his own man, he has his own mind but that cannot hinder with what we have

planned for him because it’s taken a year to reach where he has. He has con-tractual obligations with us,” Warren, who heads the Queensberry Promo-tions -- a top boxing pro-moter in the UK, told PTI during an interaction. “If Vijender wins on July 16, he will enter the top-15 of the WBO rankings. Olympic trial: Delhi High Court dismisses Sushil Kumar’s plea

Raj Singh asking him why perjury proceedings should not be initiated against him for giving false affidavit before it. The court also said since the Olympics is scheduled in August, there is a high probability that the wres-tlers might sustain inju-ries if the selection trial is conducted now. The court’s order came on the plea moved by 32-year-old Sushil Kumar who had sought a selection trial to decide who will represent the country in the 74 kg category at

Rio Olympics 2016. The WFI had opposed his plea saying 26-year-old Narsingh was a better bet compared to Sushil, who had participated in 66 kg category earlier. WFI had said that Yadav had se-cured a berth for this cat-egory at Rio by winning a bronze medal in world wrestling championship held last year. Yadav’s counsel had also opposed Sushil’s plea and told the court that the athlete who secures a berth rep-resents the country in the Olympics.

And the team management didn’t tell me the reason either,” he told The Asian Age. Negi felt unlike Mahen-dra Singh Dhoni, Delhi failed to make use of his talent. Negi had played for the now suspended Chennai Super Kings for two seasons.
