It was the firsttime we had a Cricket team involved in our campaignand demonstrates the importance of using other sports tospread the anti-racism message.

Our anti-racism educational workshops were delivered inWrexham during the Tapestry of Life and Faith Festivalweeks arranged by Wrexham Council - the festivalcelebrates diversity of cultures and faiths and many schoolsin the area took part. Wales and Tottenham star Gareth Bale was among theplayers from the Wales football squad who took time outduring a training session to talk about their experiencesof racism for our upcoming DVD.

The new season has seen us take our football club eventsinto the Welsh Premier League with The New Saints FCbecoming the first club ever to have hosted an eventfrom the WPL. We have also hosted an event withPorthmadog FC and a number of clubs from the leaguehave expressed an interest on what has been a greatresponse to our work.

One of the winners of our annual schools competition wasmatch escort with Thierry Henry at the recent ChampionsLeague match between Rangers and Barcelona. For the firsttime we had a Red Card action at The Scottish Parliamentwith over 100 MSPs, including The First Minister and allother party leaders, taking part. Thanks to the support ofThe Scottish Government we expanded our grant scheme, which enabled us to engage with grassroots and communityorganisations throughout Scotland, from The Shetland Islesin the North to Dumfries and Galloway in the South. ShowRacism the Red Card billboards were unveiled at MotherwellFC and in partnership with UNISON at Stirling Albion FC. Forthe first time the Scottish Women’s Premier League also gotinvolved. My only concern is how do we make it evenbigger and better next year! Answers on a postcard please.

Below is a summary of some of the activity that tookplace during the fortnight of action and for further detailsplease log onto our website.

FORTNIGHT OF ACTIONSupporters united against racism

Football grounds around Scotland witnessed anti-racistactions by the clubs, these actions were enhanced atmany grounds through the participation of fans groupsand supporters trusts. The Arab Trust (Dundee United FC),The Bairns Trust (Falkirk FC), the Honest Men Trust (AyrUnited FC), United Clydebank Supporters (Clydebank FC)and the Killie Trust (Kilmarnock FC) all organised eventsat their stadiums to educate local young people thatthere is no place for racism in football or society. Fangroups including the Green Brigade (Celtic FC) and theRed Ultras (Aberdeen FC) unfurled banners welcomingrefugees and condemning racism.

Community groups celebrate diversity and tackle racism

In Glasgow, the Sudanese Community and the Dar AlFalaah Community Education Association both organisedevents to celebrate Eid Ul Fitr. Govanhill CommunityDevelopment Trust and the Active Life Club bothorganised anti racist and multicultural days for the wholefamily at the Larkfield Centre in Govanhill, Glasgow. These events attracted over 1,000 people.

Anti-racist football events were organised by a number oforganisations including many Divisions within StrathclydePolice, Artists in Exile, the North Glasgow FootballDevelopment Group, the YMCA, Kids in the Street, FifeArab Society and Redpath Albion amongst many others. These events all had an anti-racist educational elementto the enjoyable football coaching sessions and matches.

Grampian Racial Equality Council co-ordinated rugbytaster sessions, with the support of Aberdeenshire ColtsRugby Club and St Machar Academy. The project’semphasis on cross-cultural involvement guaranteed thatyoung people interacted and socialised with other youngpeople that they would not normally have theopportunity to meet.

In Dumfries and in the Cairngorms organisations ranconsultation events to consider the barriers facing

minority ethnic communities and how best to tackle theissues raised. Queen of the South joined the Dumfriesand Galloway International Women’s Network todemonstrate support and provide assistance. TheDumfries and Galloway Multi-cultural Associationlaunched a Youth Project, which will utilise football andmusic to tackle racism, members of the project are nowforming a football team with the help of Gretna FC.

During the fortnight, Love Music, Hate Racism launched afree double album, which tackles racism head-on. Thisalbum can be downloaded for free fromwww.nme.com/lovemusichateracism.

It is not possible to mention all the actions which tookplace this year, but it is clear that the anti-racistmovement throughout the UK is growing, October wasBlack History Month and the actions mentioned aboveare indicators to the growing awareness of the rise inracism and the willingness and ability that together wecan tackle this scourge.

SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD6

A natural break occurred in the events programme overthe summer while schools concentrated on exams, andthen were closed for the holidays and the football clubshad their break between seasons. This break allowed usto prepare for the new football season and arrange dateswith football clubs for the new season. Consequently, Iam pleased to say that the period between September10th and November 7th has been very busy and weshould have attained our target by the end of November.

Here is a list of the events that took place duringthis time:

10/09/07 Wycombe Wanderers FC

11/09/07 Hartlepool United FC

11/10/07 Blackpool FC

16/10/07 York City FC

17/10/07 Northampton Town FC

17/10/07 Rotherham United FC

18/10/07 Doncaster Rovers FC

18/09/07 Stockport County FC

19/09/07 Macclesfield Town FC

20/09/07 Oldham Athletic FC

24/09/07 Peterborough United FC

24/10/07 Sunderland AFC

25/10/07 Coventry City FC

26/10/07 Ipswich Town FC

30/10/07 Milton Keynes Dons FC

01/11/07 Bath City FC

05/11/07 Wolverhampton Wanderers FC

07/11/07 Aston Villa FC

18 events took place between September 10th andNovember 7th in England. Pleasingly, 10 of these eventswere with clubs who had not hosted a SRtRC eventpreviously.

• 41 players participated in these events • Attended by 1511 young people• 25 councillors and council representatives participated

The participation of the clubs and the councils hasensured that the young people who attended theseevents are presented with a very positive unifiedmessage against racism. Involving young people in a Q&Awith football players is undoubtedly one of the highlightsof our campaign and I think, a good experience that

young people will remember. We have generated quite abit of localised press coverage with the events, appearingon local radio stations, newspapers and featuring on localTV news at 4 of the events. Expanding the range of clubsthat we work with in this way, means that we can useour resources and involve and engage more young peoplewith the anti-racism message.

Full reports from each event are available on the SRtRCwebsite. I would like to thank all of the people at thefootball clubs and councils who have helped us toorganise these events. Large thanks are also due to thevolunteers, football club staff, players and schools whohave attended and participated in these events.

Before the end of the year events will take place atLuton Town FC, Arsenal FC, Portsmouth FC, West HamUnited FC, Hull City AFC and Bradford City FC. If you wouldlike more details or to attend any of the events listedbelow, please contact me [email protected]
