Surely as flowers bloom in the Spring, the City of Lynwood continues to blossom with the determined leadership of the Mayor and City Council, who are courageously working to transform the community to promote healthier lives and a happier more livable City. We all know that community engagement is at the core of how Lynwood functions, from re-energizing its city-wide Weight Loss Challenge to reviving community pride with a Lynwood Commitment Clean-up events, the momentum continues in making Lynwood a livable City. Also, with many City improvement projects marked for the year, we are on pace to have a number of projects completed by the end of this year. Adding to the quality of Lynwood lives, the City recently hosted a grand Special Needs Celebration which gifted many families with food, fun and toys. WHAT’S GOING ON?

Lynwood City Manager Jose Ometeotl has moved to fill the senior leadership voids in the city’s Public Works Department. William “Bill” Stracker will serve as the Interim Public Works Director, temporarily replacing Sal Mendez who resigned this month. Stracker has previously worked with the City as a consultant, and according to the City Manager “knows the team and can hit the ground running”. Marlene Miyoshi will serve as the Public Works Operations Manager–a position that is currently vacant. She has prior consultant experience with Lynwood and currently provides services to the City of Bell. Steve Wright will work on special projects assigned by Stracker and the City Manager. Wright previously served as the City Engineer in Pasadena. These appointments will provide flexibility, continuity of service and buttress the division as the search for permanent placements begins. The Department of Public Works is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the City’s water system, sewer system, tree maintenance, streets, storm drains, street lighting, traffic signals, parks, median islands, buildings and related facilities. In addition, it administers the trolley buses, oil recycling, refuse collection and recycling, and street sweeping programs.

NEW INTERIM MANAGEMENT FOR PUBLIC WORKS

The first stage of the inspections of Lynwood’s 22 motels by the city of Lynwood’s Public Safety Division has concluded. “All 22 motels have been inspected,” said JD Whitaker, Public Safety Manager for the city of Lynwood. “We will continue to work with the owners and managers going forward to make sure that the motels meet all requirements. Officers documented any code violations, and were looking into all licensing issues, inspected all fire and smoke detectors and made

sure the motels have and are keeping current required paperwork. Part of why the inspections were ordered by City Manager Jose Ometeotl was to discourage prostitution in the city. No prostitution or prostitutes were in sight during the inspections. “The goal of these inspections is to promote public safety and public health,” said the city manager. “In addition, we are making the statement that the prostitution which these motels have attracted needs to go elsewhere.”

The Public Safety Division is responsible for ensuring that Lynwood’s public and private properties, as well as, streets and alleys are clear of abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, and inoperative vehicles.In accordance with the Lynwood Municipal Code, the accumulation and storage of abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative vehicles or parts on private or public property is deemed a public nuisance and shall be abated at the owner’s expense. The presence and storage of these vehicles create conditions that reduces the value of private property, promotes blight and deterioration, and attracts crime to your neighborhood. It also invites potential fire hazards, hazards to the health and safety of minors, and creates a harborage for rodents, insects, and other pests. Properties that have such vehicles are in

Lynwood High School senior Mark Iniguez knows that the high cost of college can be a barrier for students so he was determined to get a jumpstart by taking college courses and exploring scholarship opportunities. Iniguez’s hard work paid off in a big way on Feb. 1 when he was offered a $92,000 scholarship to Benedict College during the Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Caravan Tour.Hundreds of Lynwood Unified Students filled the gymnasiums at Lynwood and Firebaugh high schools to meet with HBCU recruiters, who presented them with on-the-spot acceptance and, for some, full-ride scholarships. “I am excited because a lot of people do not always get the opportunity to go to college,” Iniguez said. “A full-ride scholarship to

Education and community are top priorities for Maria Negrete, a mother of three who volunteered in Lynwood’s schools for many years. She eventually started working for the school district as a campus monitor at Firebaugh High School and Roosevelt Elementary. She raised her family in Lynwood and her three daughters attended Firebaugh, where she was an active volunteer. They graduated and each went on to attend college: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Wellesley College (Massachusetts). Maria was named Lynwood’s Parent of the Year in 2008 and has been recognized as Parent of the Year at Hosler Middle School and Cesar Chavez Middle School. As a 30-year resident of Lynwood, Maria is well-known in the community she loves. “I love my city and am very proud to be a volunteer,” she said. “I also love helping students across the school district to remain focused on their education and future goals.”

The 12th Anniversary of the Senior Center will feature Senior Center Social Clubs and groups hosting the annual open house April 25 from 12 noon to 3pm. All Lynwood residents are welcome to enjoy an afternoon of fun events, tours, and senior-based recreational and educational programs. The Lynwood Senior Center is a beautiful and spacious facility that was designed for the enjoyment and leisure of the City’s mature adult population, 55 years and older. The Center offers recreational, social, educational and health-related programming throughout the year. Seniors are encouraged to join one or all of the many clubs offered at the Center, including: Bingo Club, Domino Club, Card Club, Friendship Club, Gardening Club, Travel Club, Karaoke, Red Hatters, La Familia and the new Walking Club. The Senior Center offers an array of classes and workshops Monday through Thursday of every week and it offers a world of unique experiences that will surely capture hearts of anyone who stops by for a visit.
