Dear Almabani Colleagues,

Since this is the last edition of the Almabani Journal for 2017, I would like to announce that the Media Department will be relocating to the Almabani Head Office under the management of Mr. Alfred Hakim. This relocation does not mean we will falter on any project follow-up or a requirement to cover a certain milestone. On the contrary, our team of photographers will continue doing their daily routes on the projects within Jeddah area, and weekly runs to all remote projects that demand coverage.Four years ago, we have launched the in-house video productions that you are viewing on our web portal, social media and email. This is all thanks to the remarkable affordable technology that we are using and also thanks to the notable talents of our Media Team who strive to keep you up to date on all the achievements and news from all our projects. Thus, it is my pleasure to reveal that by the start of the year 2018, we would be implementing a new filming technology in all our video productions. As seemingly more and more people are moving to the Mirrorless cameras, enter the Nikon D850, a camera that proves that DSLR Technology is very, very far from dead. The Nikon D850 is Nikon's latest high resolution full-frame DSLR, boasting a 46 mega pixels backside-illuminated CMOS sensor. But, in a fairly radical departure for the series, it is also one of the company's fastest-shooting DSLRs. This combination of properties should significantly widen the camera's appeal to high-end productions that we will materialize in our productions. In this regard, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Almabani’s Management whose support to bring the Media Department to the next level of Corporate Communication Standards will be felt in the forthcoming journals. On behalf of the Media Department Team, I would like to wish you an early Season's Greetings, hoping that the year 2018 will bring further success to Almabani and to each and every one of you.

John A El KhouryMedia Department Manager

*Please do not hesitate to contact the Media Department Team whenever you have an event, achievement or on-site progress that you deem newsworthy. We will make sure to cover and publish it in the Almabani Journal.

Seven Airports Project - Phase IIAl Baha Airport Construction of MSE Wall At The New Runway 07

11

Al Baha

ALMABANI IS EXECUTING ONE OF THE HIGHEST RETAINING WALLS IN THE MIDDLE EAST, WITH A TOTAL HEIGHT OF 28 METERS AND A LENGTH OF 260 METERS.

The Mechanically Stabilized Earth method was chosen for this wall due to the unique location of this airport, that happened to be on a hill surrounded by deep slopes. This method consists of the installation of reinforced concrete panels connected to fiber belts where the belts are going

in between the 20 cm selected fill layers behind the wall.A drainage piping system is installed under the wall to take over all kind of water seepage from the general fills to the selected fill that might cause on overload on the structure.

Guest of the JournalAn Interview with Project Manager Sleiman Geagea

JK: If we want to highlight the major achievements and milestones that you took part in during your career, what do you recall? Describe to us those moments of pride.SG: I would sum up some of my major achievements as follows: •Dhahran Airbase: Projects that consist of the Academic Building, the Training Hangar, External works and Utilities and the Renovation of Two Rooftops of Two Warehouses. Overall budget: 40 Million USD.•Extension of Al Oruba Road and Abu Baker al Siddiq Road through Riyadh Airbase: Overall budget: 400 Million USD consisting of 3 road tunnels, 3 bridges, 2 underpasses, 11 km of freeways and service buildings.•Rehabilitation of Selected Concrete Structures, SWCC Jubail Plant: Overall budget: 42.5 Million USD. This project covered concrete repair for the desalination plants.•Intersection of Al Dhahran Highway with Mecca Highway: Overall budget: 16 Million USD, consisting of underpasses, bridges and roundabout.•Protection from Storm Water Risks and Execution of the Bisha Road: Overall budget: 5 Million USD. This project covered the erection of retaining walls, water management infrastructure and box culverts.

JK: Tell us about your latest project in Dhahran. Describe your contribution to develop the relationship with Almabni’s client, the Royal Saudi Air Force.SG: Almabani’s scope of works was to design and construct a new three-story Academic Building with an area of 11.950 m2 located at the Technical Studies Institute in Dhahran Airbase. Our recommendation was based on the fact that precast concrete requires a shorter period to execute, a smaller number of manpower and guarantees the quality of the structural elements which are cast in a factory known for having an appropriate environment for concrete casting. A renovation of a training hangar in Dhahran Airbase was awarded to Almabani. The initial scope of works was later increased with some additional variation orders to renovate two rooftops of two warehouses and another for the Academic Building which includes the asphalt works, the infrastructure of electricity, storm water, sewage, telecommunication and landscape with hardscape works. Full support of Almabani top management with the Client's approval gave us motivation that helped us in our hard work.

An Interview with Project Manager Sleiman Geagea

JK: If we want to tackle the current day situation, how do you compare the challenges during your early days in Almabani with the current challenges?

SG: I have witnessed a lot of challenges throughout the years spent with Almabani. The challenges were hard to overcome, especially to preserve the safety and progress of the projects that had to be handed over on time. The delivery of our projects was a challenge by itself. We have always counted on the full support of our top management to provide us with the motivations to overcome these challenges. These days the whole Gulf area is suffering from lower oil prices, and lower investment in infrastructure projects. Our goal is to weather this period by reigning our costs and executing our projects to the best standards possible.

JK: In your opinion, describe to the Journal readers what strategies should be devised to face the current construction market transformation.

SG: We have to focus on reducing our costs, keeping in mind that we should maintain the projects quality. In our project at Dhahran Airbase, we convinced the client to make columns, beams and deck slabs using the precast option instead of the cast in situ. This way, we have reduced the cost and maintained the handing over of the project on time. Also, this precast technique has guaranteed the quality of the structural elements.

The goal of Almabani was to complete our project within the stipulated time according to the international standards of safety, environment and quality. Good safety management is crucial to the systematic prevention of construction accidents. In this regard, the efforts of our safety team were unleashed at our

17

project in Dhahran Airbase. This team monitored the implementation of the safety management system and inspected safety audit reports. Our execution teams were fully dedicated to reach 100% safety. So Almabani achieved that “Zero Harm “goal on this project.

JK: What message do you give to the young engineers and employees at Almabani?SG: Team work is the key to success. This would be my message to the young engineers.Team work should be organized in a proper way. The groups should be selected homogeneously. All engineers and employees are expected to be fully dedicated in order to accomplish their missions successfully. In addition, I would advise them to address their conscience in every critical situation before any important decision. Finally, I would ask them to find new ways to reduce the execution costs and ensure timely delivery of projects on time and excellent quality.

JK: At the end of this interview, I leave the final words to you. Is there anything that you would like to add?SG: More progress and creation are expected by our hard work that would lead to our survival in the business world. Thank God, the project was delivered on time and it will be a true example and a typical landmark in Dhahran Airbase.A reception was held by the Head of the Royal Saudi Air forces (RSAF) and the Head of the Technical Studies Institute ( TSI ). to honour Almabani for accomplishing the project successfully. In the end, I would like to thank the team of engineers and management staff and our top management for allowing us to complete our task as needed and meeting all the requirements.
