Why BMT for Sri Lanka?
• Currently, patients with haematological malignancies need to travel to Singapore and India for stem cell transplants.
• Highly motivated and educated medical community.– NCI – NBTS
• Committed government authorities – doubling of per capita health expenditure 2011-16 (Australia-Sri Lanka aid program strategy 2012-
16).• Infrastructure currently being constructed• Health expenditure as GDP/capita is appropriate for BMT • BMT can be cost effective for thalassemia/CML.
Sri Lanka visitApril 2014
• Visit for 4 days with David Ma• One day at National Cancer Institute Maharagama• Attended the Annual Sessions of the Sri Lankan College of Transfusion Physicians• Inspected the National Centre for Blood transfusion• Long term plan is for 16 SL staff to come to SVH for training over a 1-4month period
in 2015.• Funding applications submitted to Commonwealth Endeavour Education Fellowship
and Australia Award Fellowship.• Attendance at WBMT meeting in South Africa November 2014.
• Ist autologous BMT in late 2015 (with supervision)
• Development of allografting/BMDU in 2016.
