INTRODUCTION
In April 2014, six individual farmers participatedin field trials to find the effect of BSN Ultra seedtreatment on the paddy-field cultivation of rice.BSN Ultra is marketed in Sri Lanka as BSNRICE. Different varieties of rice were alsofeatured as part of the trials.
Trials were commenced across several regions in Sri Lanka and are identified on the map as follows :
• Location-1 Kalmunei in Eastern Province• Location-2 Rajanganaya District in North
Central Province• Location-3 Wilachchiya District in North
Central Province• Location-4 Hunumulla in Western Province

Initially, observations were maintained across allthe trial fields, however the impact of theunavailability of water saw the cessation of thetrial plots in Western Province. Early indicationshowever were positive. Photographic progressonly has been provided for Eastern Province, again with well performing plants. North CentralProvince trial sites are fully supported with bothphotographic and results-based data. Sri Lanka

METHODOLOGY
The treatment of the paddy seeds BEFORE sowing in each of thetrials, followed the same general procedure :
one bushel of paddy seeds was soaked for 48-hours
100ml of BSN Ultra was mixed with 200ml of waterand the solution then sprayed onto the soaked seedand mixed in well
the treated seed was then allowed 20-minutes toabsorb the nutrients
weight was placed onto the seed and allowed afurther 24-hours to germinate
the seeds were then distributed onto the paddy-field
All farmers then followed a recommended fertiliser program by theDepartment of Agriculture (Sri Lanka) for the entire crop cultivationseason, and several field observations were made at different cropgrowth stages and photographs taken as part of a permanent record.
Harvesting data and details were also recorded at the end of thepaddy season.

CONCLUSION
Observations were made at the end of each growth stage.
The benefits seen from the seed treated with BSN Ultraover that of the Control seed are reported as follows :
At Germination period
• early root emergence• higher germination percentage
At Nursery / early vegetative stage
• greater number of greenish coloured seedlings• uniform growth of the field• higher number of both feeder and fibrous roots• stronger root systems• less weed population• plants of greater height (more vigorous growth)
At Tillering stage
• more tillers per plant• stronger plant base• uniform growth of the field• less weed population• stronger root systems
At Reproductive stage
• filled grains• less infertile grains
At Harvest
• higher number of panicles per plant• higher number of seeds per panicle• higher number of filled grains per panicle• filled grains• less inert materials• shiny seeds• greater weight
