GREEN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY - S.C. Siddagangappa (Sl.Gr Lecturer)

Acros Fukuoka building, Fukuoka, JapanKhoo Tech Puat Hospital, Yishun

A Green building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthierspace for occupants as compared to conventional building. A building isassessed based on its predicted performance over its entire life cycle. Thestages identified for evolution arePre-construction: This is concerned to the site issues like proximity to thepublic transport, type of soil, kind of land, location, flora and fauna beforeconstruction activity starts, natural landscape and features

Planning and construction: Issues ofresource conservation and reductionin resource demand, resourceutilization efficiency and recovery, re-use and provision for occupant healthand well-being. Prime resourceconsidered is land, water, energy airand green cover.

Operation and maintenance: Thebuilding system and process, monitoring and recording of energyconsumption, occupant’s health andwell-being and issues that affect theglobal and local environment.

How they are rated: The Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEEDIndia) Green building rating system is nationally and internationally acceptedbench mark for the design, construction and operation of high performancegreen buildings. Buildings have to register themselves for green rating. Onceconstruction completes the project team visits and evaluates all the possiblepoints under the rating system using a check listImportance and benefits of green buildings: Buildings requires a significantamount of energy. Lot of resource consumption which results in green gasemission and it is the reason environmentally friendly buildings or greenbuildings have become desirable now. When the consumption of energy is less, resources will get reduced which directly implicates cost benefit. This also leadsto the reduced maintenance. Additionally an investment in green building willhelp to increase the property value over time.Green building will efficiently utilize the natural resources. For example, greenbuildings commonly feature system, appliances and landscape that require lesswater and this attention to water efficiency drastically reduces water usage andcuts back operation cost and can help to reduce greenhouse gas emission as well.

Karnataka is home to 41 greenbuildings, 4th largest figure in thecountry, of them 39 are in Bangalore.Maharashtra tops the national figurewith highest number of greenbuildings followed by national capital.Tamilnadu holds the 3rd position.Thisarticle has been composed keepingyoung minds in reference.
