A HUMBLE TRIBUTE TO OUR NOBLE FOUNDER

Our Founder Lion Thiru.O.RM.M.SP.SV.AN.Annamalai Chettiar, B.Com.,Dip. in Journ., was born on 27.12.1923 in Devakottai, a socially and educationally backward area. He had his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai. He widely travelled abroad and was a great reader of books. He considered that education and health are quite essential for a good life.

Holding the conviction that education is the key to open the doors of upliftment, he instituted Sree Sevugan Annamalai Collge in 1970 and thereby brought the unknown Devakottai in the educational Map of Tamilnadu. Born out of his benevolence, our College has made it possible for the poor people in and around Devakottai to gain access to the portals of higher education.

He also instituted Sree Sevugan Annamalai Matriculation School and a mini health centre at Ezhuvankottai, a remote village from Devakottai. He generously donated Rs.15 lakhs to Sri Vishveswaraya Medical College Hospital, Kottaiyur.

With his guiding spirit he contributed his services as Director in the Madras Cements Ltd., Thiagarajar Mills Ltd., and Bank of Madurai Ltd. He also served as the Syndicate Member of Alagappa University, Karaikudi. He was also the Chairman of Indian Finances and Factors Ltd., Chennai. His sympathy with the socially down trodden raised him to be the Deputy Governor in the Lions International. He has been well recognized as a great Philanthropist and a man of great values.

Under the able stewardship of our beloved founder and his family members, our College has been making big strides for the past 42 years in all spheres of its activities, especially in academic programmes, enrolment of students and number of Degree holders. The quality of higher education in a disciplined academic ambience is no wonder the attraction of students and research scholars to our College. Thus our College has earned the recognition as one of the best colleges in Sivagangai District and one among the reputed Colleges in Tamilnadu.

Naturally he had won the hearts of the people and they affectionately called him “Vallal” which means donating everything to the poor.

The greatest tribute that we can pay to him is that we reaffirm our faith in his great ideals and dedicate ourselves to work strenuously to achieve his noble goals and make his dreams come true and take the College to glorious heights under the active and dynamic leadership of his sons Sri.AN.Lakshmanan Chettiar, President of the Managing Committee and Sri.A.S.Sevugan, Vice President of the Managing Committee, Smt. T.Seethalakshmi Achi, Secretary of our College who follow the foot prints and the rich tradition built by our founder, the peerless philanthropist.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR COLLEGE

Of all charitable deeds, establishing educational institutions to cater to the educational needs of the people irrespective of their caste, creed and status is the best deed.

In consonance with this dictum, Thiru.O.RM.M.SP.SV.AN.Annamalai Chettiar, under the aegis of the Shri.SV.Annamalai Chettiar Educational Trust, established a prestigious College in Devakottai to provide quality education to the students in and around Devakottai. This noble gesture cried a halt to the exodus of students to far off places.

That the College was called Sree Sevugan Annamalai College shows his profound filial piety. Affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, this higher seat of learning came into existence in 1970. Since then it has never looked back. To begin with, the College started functioning with PUC and degree courses in B.A.,(Economics) and B.A.,(Tamil).

The College came to be housed in the Majestic buildings of its own in 1972. Affiliations were granted by Madurai Kamaraj University to start science courses in PUC. Further this year witnessed the introduction of two more degree courses B.A.,(English) and B.Sc.,(Maths).

The introduction of B.Sc.,(Zoology) in the academic year 1973-1974 was another feather in the academic cap of our College. That eminent people had visited our College shows the important place our College holds in the academic map of Tamilnadu.

Dr.Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar declared open “Sevugan Chettiar-Muthukaruppi Achi Block” on 10.09.1973. Sri.K.K.Shah, the then governor of Tamilnadu declared open the “Sevugan Chettiar Valliammai Achi Hostal Block” on 13.02.1974.

With the introduction of B.Sc.,(Chemistry) in 1974-1975, B.Com., in 1975-1976, our College started making rapid strides. Co-education system was introduced in 1975-1976. N.S.S. was started in 1976-1977 to impart training in extra curricular activities.

To expose our students to Gandhian thought, our College had been offering certificate and diploma courses in Gandhian thought since 1977. Certificate course in Journalism was also offered from 1980. B.Sc.,(Physics) was started in 1981-1982. B.Sc.,(Computer Science) was started in 1989-1990.

With time flying so fast, Silver Jubilee was celebrated in August 1996. To commemorate Silver Jubilee, Amarar Annai Sivagami Achi Auditorium was built and declared open in 1997.

Launching on further expansion of our College academic milieu, Our Management started Evening College in 1998-1999. It offers Under Graduate courses in Computer Science and Commerce and Post Graduate course in Commerce. Our College is affiliated to Alagappa University, Karaikudi from 2003-2004 onwards.

On 27.12.2006, an everlasting monument of full size, bronze statue of our founder was declared open by Rtn.PR.Ramasubramania Raja, Chairman, RAMCO groups in the presence of his holiness Thavathiru Kundrakudi Adigalar.

To cater the needs of students, Exam cell and an Internet Centre with broad band facility were started functioning in 2006-2007. Annamalayar Computer Centre was opened on 27.12.2008.

B.Sc., Zoology degree course was restructured as B.Sc., Advanced Zoology and Animal Bio-Technology in the academic year 2009-2010. UGC sponsored “Sivagami Achi Block” was opened on 27.12.2009.

Two Post Graduate courses M.Sc.,(Maths) and M.A.,(Tamil) were introduced during the academic year 2010-2011. M.A.,( English) was introduced during the academic year 2011-2012.

A.Thirunavukkarasu Chettiar Administrative Building was opened during 2011-2012. Department of Physics and Economics were upgraded as Research Centres by Alagappa University, Karaikudi.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), the world’s largest University, started a study centre (SC-43052) in our College under Madurai Regional Centre in Tamilnadu with effect from 02.05.2011.

On all working days, the College functions between 10.00 am and 4.00 p.m. Lunch interval is between 1.00 p.m and 2.00 p.m.

Our College Emblem is a wonderful creation of our Founder Thiru.O.RM.M.SP.SV.AN.Annamalai Chettiar, revealing his vision and mission in building this academic edifice.

The Emblem in the structure of a Shield not only indicates that our College is a temple of learning but also suggests the protection of the downtrodden of Devakottai and its neighbourhood through higher education.

The Elephant at the top of the shield symbolizes strength and knowledge. The Sun on the left signifies health. The blooming Lotus on the right stands for Goddess Saraswathi, the Goddess of learning. In Hindu mythology, She is depicted as sitting on the Lotus. Thus Goddess Saraswathi is invoked to bless our students with knowledge - that is Power. Two pencils arranged like a T convey the ideas of numeracy and literacy.

In fact, the Emblem together with the College motto “Strive with Self Confidence” manifests the chief ideals of our Founder that our students should be educated as well as moulded into cultured citizens with lofty thoughts to serve the humanity. In short, the higher education that the students receive and the higher thinking that they cultivate in this College will definitely take them to higher positions in their future life as symbolized by the Shield in the Emblem.
