• This is a process and a tool for the internal administration designed to give a continuous amount of reliable and validated information to determine if the organization complies with a previous determined criteria developed by the management of the organization

• The Environmental Performance Evaluation and the Environmental Audits help the management of an organization to evaluate the environmental performance and helps to identify the areas of improvement that are required

• 2.3 Environmental Indicator (EI): specific expression that gives information of the local, regional, national or global environmental conditions

Note 1 Environmental performance has a different definition in this norm and in the ISO 14001:1996 and ISO 14004:1996.

Selection of the indicators according to the public

An organization that discharges treated water to a river can select indicators for the Environmental Performance Evaluation:

Example

Total quantity of a specific contaminant discharged per year (local community).

• Concentration of contaminants in the residual water (legal authorities, and regulators).

• Quantity of contaminant discharged per amount of produced product (Directors and consumers)
