a. Creating a urban canvas that can facilitate multiple users and programs

While 5th and 6th streets are important feeders to and from the freeway, Olive and Hill street can be more flexible

Pershing Square as a flexible, open, urban space is uniquely positioned to enable and host (un)programmed activity—an urban living room

Partnership with adjacent property owners could bring funds and users to the site

We are investing in our future The idea of being an interconnected metropolis is realized

We will move through the city in many different forms

Pershing Square can be the anchor to many centers: emotionally, physically, programmatically

Transfer of site’s FAR could fund renewal, plus other civic projects

Reprogramming of underground parking could generate funds

An assessment on the “improvement district” could fund renewal and support innovation resources on-site

Hosting, serving, and enabling multiple users

Pershing Square

Hill Street

The garage access ramps create physical and visual obstruction to pedestrians

With the walkable territory of the Square, we can optimize flows of pedestrians and vehicles on the site by selectively removing and reorienting access ramps

The current state of Pershing Square is obsolete. A relic of old and failed thinking, the Square must renew itself by connecting with

the goals and ambitions of a 21st century Los Angeles. As the city expands its public transit system and adopts a denser and more

sustainable way of living, the square can reflect and support this new paradigm by becoming ‘center of centers’ within LA – a catalyst

for the district within which it resides, while simultaneously an attractor for the broader region. In so doing, Pershing Square can

serve as an urban canvas that registers the lives, dreams, and aspirations of current and future generations of Angelenos - fulfilling

its potential as an iconic landmark, and taking its rightful place among the world’s great public spaces.
