Between Heaven andEarth: Ilene Winn LedererThrough July 20, 2010

    Berger Gallery

Between Heaven and Earthshow-cases examples of illustrations fromIlene Winn Lederers newly released

publication, Between Heaven andEarth: An Illuminated TorahCommentary. Lederer depicts eachof the Torahs 54 portions with avibrant and fresh interpretation. Theexhibit includes a selection of illus-trations as well as excerpts, inHebrew and English, from theirrespective Torah portions. This is thefirst time illustrations from this pub-lication are displayed as an exhibit.

Interested in exploring the interplaybetween historical and popular cul-ture references, Lederer suffuses theillustrations with a combination of

playfulness and scholarly examina-tion. She tackles the issue manycontemporary Jewish artists face:how to be an artist and not breakthe Second Commandment, Thoushall not make a graven image.Between Heaven and Earth demon-strates that her work is an organicextension of her religious curiosity, and affirms her adroit skills as botha scholar and illustrator.
