Phase Objective Statement The overall objective of this project is to provide SPX with a telemetry system capable of transmitting strain data from gauges attached to an operating impeller to a user interface of our choice.
◦ All transmission and reception must be wireless◦ Gauges and telemetry systems must have reasonable life cycles
This phase is dedicated to high level concept development and narrowing down of components to only a few candidates.
◦ Research and benchmarking are of crucial importance to this stage◦ Feasibility analysis gives us a sanity check on our system design◦ Morphological Table and Pugh Table allow us to organize and rank our ideas

Feasibility Strain Gauge Life
Can commercial gauges survive 2+ months of testing and stay laminated?
Gauge life is difficult to test since our environment is not harsh.
Select gauges with a higher NEMA rating than needed.
Battery Life Can we select a battery that will survive for an entire day of testing?
This can be solved by an analysis of the power required to take the number of samples specified by SPX.
100 Hz sampling rate + 10-20 minute test sessions + 10 sessions a day
1,200,000 samples per day
Using Mantracourt Online Calculator:◦ 2x AA batteries will power the system for 4 days◦ 2x D batteries will power the system for over a month
