CONCERT AT THE PARK LAUNCHES 105TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

St. Paul University Manila launched the celebration of its 105th Anniversary with a Concert at the

Park at 5:00 P.M., 22 January 2017 in the Open Air Theater, Rizal Park.

The concert opened with a welcome speech by Sr. Ma. Evangeline Anastacio, SPC, University

President:

It is truly serendipitous that we are in a historic and scenic place to

celebrate a historical event—the 105th anniversary of our institution,

St. Paul University. It has been 105 years since the Sisters of St.

Paul of Chartres opened a novitiate on a swampy piece of land in

Malate. Responding to the requests of neighboring families, they

opened a kindergarten, then gradually a grade school, a high school,

a college. That small school, St. Paul Institution, has now become St.

Paul University Manila. The seeds of service planted by the first

Sisters in Malate have multiplied a hundredfold in our alumni, who

have continued the legacy of service to the community, the country,

and the Church.

It is fitting that we launch our anniversary with a concert of songs and dances because our

school has been known for these and another art form: drama. It is all the more fitting that we

celebrate it here, in the City of Manila, where the school was born and continues to thrive. And it

is most fitting that we celebrate this milestone in our history in this historic place, witness to

many significant events in our country’s history.

We hope you will enjoy this concert as much as we enjoy presenting it to you.

The program of the concert was as follows:

The SPU Manila Chorale and Large Vocal Ensemble sang “A

New Year Dawns with Grace and Hope” by Jon Paige and Brad

Nix.

This was followed by the Paulinian Dance Troupe’s

interpretation of the Cebu festival, “Sinulog.”

The Guitar Ensemble—Rowell Adonis, Richard de

Leon, Fernando Sy-Changco III, David Tiongson,

and Emmanuel Valdoz, and their teacher, Prof.

Jose Valdez—rendered “Gaano Ko Ikaw Kamahal”

by Ernani Cuenco and arranged by Jose Valdez and

a Philippine Medley arranged by Prof. Valdez.

The Silangcruz siblings—Jean Galway

Silangcruz, flute 1; Josh Rampal Silangcruz,

flute 2; Juliana Silangcruz, bass flute; and

James Pierre Silangcruz, piano—played the

“Concerto for 2 Flutes and Bass, RV 533” by

the Italian Baroque composer, Antonio Lucio Vivaldi.

The String Ensemble— Michael John Frias, violin

1; Rhodalyn Tacuboy, violin 2; Mary Hazel

Saclayan, viola; and Christian Geo Molina, cello-

-interpreted two movements of “Divertimento in

D, K. 136”: I. Allegro and III. Presto by the

Austrian Classical composer, Wolfgang Amadeus

Mozart.

Two young pianists, Zandro Zulueta, and Gabriel James

Frias, played three lively Filipino melodies composed by

Nicanor Abelardo and arranged by Augusto Espino:

“Kenkoy”; the Cebuano folk song, “Ahay, Tuburan”; and the

tongue-twisting “Pandangguhan.”

A mixed vocal and instrumental ensemble—Jean Luc Dinglasan and Ma. Alexandrea Seraspe,

vocals; Glen Carlo de Lara, piano; Christian Arjay Co, bass; and John Robbie Niedo, drums—

entertained the audience with three jazz numbers by American composers: “There Will Never Be

Another You” by Harry Warren; “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Cole Porter; and “Spain’ by

Chick Corea.

The Paulinian Dance Troupe brought the house down with their Modern Hip-Hop dance number.

This was followed by an OPM Medley by selected singers—Jedessa Calacday, soprano; Icon

Leander Fernandez, tenor; Jan Kevin Cuizon, tenor; and Jean Luc Dinglasan, high baritone.

The finale was “A Jubilant Psalm” adapted from Psalms 8 and 67 by Emily Crocker and “Te

Deum,” composed by Sr. Maria Anunciata Sta. Ana, SPC and arranged by Dr. Raul M. Sunico,

which were interpreted by the SPU Manila Chorale and Large Vocal Ensemble, with Sr. Maria

Anunciata conducting, and Zandro Zulueta, Gabriel James Frias, and the SPU Manila String

Ensemble, assisting artists.

The concert ended with everyone singing the Paulinian Hymn, composed by Francisco Santiago.

Hosts for the concert were Mrs. Marionette O. Martinez, Mrs. Sherry L. Alingod, Hannah

Alabaidan (nursing student) and Miguel Luis Nera (Masscom student).

PAULINIANS TO COME HOME FOR GENERAL ALUMNI HOMECOMING

Graduates of St. Paul Manila are expected to troop to their Alma

Mater to COME HOME on 29 January 2017. The theme selected

by the golden jubilarians this year, High School 1967, is EASE

DOWN HERRAN, a take from the song, “Ease down the Road,”

from the musical, The Wiz.

The program of activities for the homecoming follows:

2:00 P.M. Registration: Pedro Gil and Malvar entrances

3:00 P.M. Mass: Chapel of the Crucified Christ

Fr. Rolando Agustin, celebrant

4:00 P.M. Picture taking by batches: Chapel steps

5:00 P.M. Fellowship

5:30 P.M. Dinner

6:00 P.M. Program: Quadrangle

The program will include special numbers by three jubilarian

classes: High School 1967-Golden, High School 1972-Sapphire, and College 1982-Coral. Sr. Ma.

Evangeline Anastacio, SPC, University President, will give the welcome remarks. She will also

receive the final second half of the donation of High School 1962, Emerald Jubilarians for their

Senior High School Fund. A raffle of big prizes will also be held. Special guest performers will be:

Marissa Sanchez (host), The Company, the Mulatto Band, and Martin Nievera.
