WelcomeSprint PCS Wireless Web ConnectionSM allows you touse your Sprint PCS PhoneTM in place of a computermodem. Whatever you’ve done with a modem before, you can now do with your Sprint PCS Phone. Withan ordinary “wireline” modem, your computer canconnect only when and where you can find an available wall jack. With Sprint PCS Wireless WebConnection, your computer can connect through theSprint PCS Network, giving you the freedom toaccess information when and where you choose.

To your computer, your Sprint PCS Phone will actlike a generic modem. This means you can continueusing your favorite communications software, whether it’s e-mail, fax or web browser.

Although your Sprint PCS Phone will take the placeof your ordinary modem, there’s actually no modeminside the phone. The modem is located within theSprint PCS Network; the phone connects your com-puter with the modem that’s in the network. In turn, the network modem communicates with the comput-er or network you’re calling.

If you want to connect withAmerica Online, you won’t be ableto use the Sprint PCS Dialer tomake the connection becauseAmerica Online uses its own con-nection software and doesn’t useWindows Dial-Up Networking. However, you can set up AmericaOnline to use yourSprint PCS Phone to connect.Consult the Appendix to learnhow to set up and use AmericaOnline with yourSprint PCS Phone.

If you usually just run your e-mailsoftware or Web browser and theconnection is madeautomatically, you can adjust thatsoftware to connect via yourSprint PCS Phone instead of yourother modem. These applicationstypically have an option to allowthe user to specify the Dial-UpNetworking connection that isused to connect. Once you’vefound that option (you may needto consult the application’s helpfiles), select the “wireless” version

Q. Is it OK to end a data or fax call in the same way Iend a voice call — by pressing END or closing theflip on my phone? What if I turn the phone off?

A. Using your phone to end a data or fax call won’tusually cause problems. However, because somesoftware may react poorly, it is recommendedthat you end all calls via your computer software.

Q. What will happen if my battery runs out during awireless web call?

A. The call will end. For this reason you shouldmonitor battery strength levels during data andfax calls.

Q. If the signal is weak, will data transmission slow down?

A. Generally, the speed at which data moves is notaffected by signal strength. However, there maybe times when signal interference requires datato be present, which will increase the overalltransfer time.

Q. If my signal is strong, will data transmission speed up?

A. No. Data transmission at the highest signalstrength levels will be no faster than at lowerlevels.

Frequently Asked Questions 133

Q. Why does my computer sometimes say ‘Connected at19200 bps’ when the phone is only capable of 14400bps?

A. When your computer reports a speed of 19200bps, it is referring to the speed across the cablethat connects your computer with your phone. The speed between your phone and the Sprint PCS Network (and thus the overall system speed) is limited to 14400 bps.

Q. How does my Sprint PCS Phone differ from a standard external modem?

A. Aside from the obvious difference that it’s wire-less, the biggest difference between your Sprint PCS Phone and an ordinary modem isthat there’s no modem in your Sprint PCSPhone — the modem actually resides within theSprint PCS Network. However, to your computer, your phone looks the same as an ordinary 14400 bps external serial modem. Toyou, the important difference is that your phoneis wireless.

Q. Why does the battery seem to last longer sometimes, and not as long other times?

A. Several factors can affect battery life. Low signalstrength will reduce your battery life becauseyour phone must use more power to transmitand receive signals. Also, transmitting data usesmore power than receiving data. So your batterylife will drain faster when you’re transmittingdata than when you’re receiving it.

132 Frequently Asked Questions

Page 68: Sprint PCS .® The clear alternative to cellular SM. · the Blue Kite Compression Software. When installing the software, you have two Internet connection options, Enhanced Internet

Q. What happens to my wireless web calls if I moveout of the Sprint PCS Service Area during the call?

A. The call will be dropped, just as with a voicecall. In some cases, your computer’s softwaremay continue to behave as if the call wereactive, at least for a short while.

Q What happens if I disconnect the data cable in themiddle of a call?

A. Eventually, the call will be dropped. In somecases, your phone and your computer’s softwaremay continue to behave as if the call wereactive, at least for a short while.

Q. Can I use my faster internal modem with my Sprint PCS Phone to place a high-speed wirelessweb call?

A. No. Your Sprint PCS Phone doesn’t function likea wireless wall jack. You won’t be able to useother modems together with Sprint PCSWireless Web Connection.

Q. Can I use Sprint PCS Wireless Web Connectionwhile roaming outside the Sprint PCS Service Area?

A. No. The Sprint PCS Wireless Web Connection iscurrently unavailable while roaming off ournationwide network.

Frequently Asked Questions 135

Q. How strong of a signal do I need to use Sprint PCSWireless Web Connection?

A. As long as your phone reports that it is within aSprint PCS Service Area, you may use Sprint PCS Wireless Web Connection with anylevel of signal strength. A good rule of thumb isthat if you can place a voice call where you are, then you can place a data or fax call.

Q. What happens if someone calls me when my phoneis on a wireless web call?

A. While your phone is on a data or fax call, allincoming voice calls will be handled as if yourphone were turned off. Unlike with voice calls,Call Waiting does not function when your SprintPCS Phone is on a data or fax call.

Q. How can I receive a fax?

A. To receive a fax, you must use your phone’smenus to set up the phone to receive an incoming fax call. Note that when your phone is awaiting an incoming fax call, it cannot receivevoice calls.

Q. Is there actually a modem in my phone?

A. No. The modem is located within the Sprint PCSNetwork. But to your computer, your Sprint PCSPhone looks just like an ordinary modem.

134 Frequently Asked Questions

Page 69: Sprint PCS .® The clear alternative to cellular SM. · the Blue Kite Compression Software. When installing the software, you have two Internet connection options, Enhanced Internet

Q. What is a “Service Provider?”

A. A “Service Provider” is anyone that will allowyou to connect to their computer via modem, either as a registered user or as a guest. Someservice providers offer access to limited systems, whereas others, like Internet service providers(ISPs) or companies like America Online, provide broader access to the Internet and theWorld Wide Web. If your company lets you “dial in” to access their servers, then they areacting as a service provider to you.

Frequently Asked Questions 137

Q. Why don’t I hear dialing (touch-tone) sounds frommy phone when placing a wireless web call?

A. When using an ordinary modem, you hear dialing (touch-tone) sounds because the modemis placing a call on the traditional analog phonenetwork. When using Sprint PCS Wireless WebConnection, your phone is placing a call on theSprint PCS Network, where it uses digital signals instead of touch tones. It’s the same reason you don’t hear dialing sounds when placing a voice call on your Sprint PCS Phone.

Q. Can I control my phone with AT commands like astandard modem?

A. Yes. Your Sprint PCS Phone will respond to ATcommands like an ordinary modem.

Q. How can I charge my battery and use the Sprint PCS Wireless Web Connection simultaneously?

A. Some Sprint PCS Phones support separatepower and data connectors. However, mostSprint PCS Phones use the same port for dataand for recharging the battery, which means youcannot connect the battery charger and datacable at the same time. For this reason, we recommend that you monitor your batterystrength levels when using Sprint PCS WirelessWeb Connection. If you need to use the SprintPCS Wireless Web Connection for long periods oftime, you may want to consider acquiring a second battery for your phone.
