Terry Cullen44th Year at Cornell • Hobart ‘64; MBA-Cornell ‘66The Terry Cullen Co-Head Coach of Sprint Football

Terry Cullen became the Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football when the position was endowed in the fall of 2001 by Jay Carter '71, ME '72 and his wife, Juliann Reisner Carter '71. And at Cullen’s request in August 2008, some of his coaching duties were relinquished, and Bart Guccia was named his co-head coach. Cullen began his coaching career with sprint football in 1964 while pursuing an MBA at Cornell. Over his 43-year tenure, Terry's teams have combined for a 147-120-7 (.549) record and have garnered six league championships. The 2006 season will go down in the history books as one of the best the squad has ever had. The team captured a perfect 6-0 record on its way to the Big Red’s first CSFL title since 1986. And as well as having the league’s MVP, Cornell had 22 All-CSFL selections, including seven first-team picks. Cullen was raised in Ithaca, N.Y., where he played football and baseball in high school. He graduated from Hobart College with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics in 1964. At Hobart he was a four-year starter at quarterback in football (MVP-’63) and at midfield in lacrosse (Memorial Award-’64). He also was a letterman in basketball. After earning his master of business administration degree in 1966, Cullen did a 1967 tour in Vietnam as a Marine Corps infantry officer where he received both the Purple Heart and Silver Star. When he returned to Ithaca, he resumed his coaching career with his father, Bob Cullen. He served as offensive coordinator until 1977 when he assumed co-head coaching duties. Cullen's coaching background includes sprint football (1964-present) and freshman lacrosse (five years) at Cornell, Ithaca High School lacrosse (organized the first team in 1965), Ithaca College lacrosse (1970-71), the Upstate Lacrosse Club (1971-75), the Miller Brewery lacrosse team (1975-81, National Club Coach of the Year 1978), head coach of Team U.S.A. (1978) and the Ithaca summer lacrosse team (1968-1998). He also has coaching experience in baseball, hockey and squash. Cullen has been active as an official in basketball and lacrosse for over 30 years. He has officiated numerous championships at the high school, collegiate and international levels. Cullen and his wife, Suzanne, have two children, one granddaughter and two grandsons.

First Year as Co-Head Coach Bart Guccia enters his fourth year with the sprint football team and his first as co-head coach of the squad, after the announcement was made in August 2008 that he would be assuming a majority of the on-field coach-ing and gameday decisions. Guccia graduated from Hobart with a bachelor's degree. He was captain of the 1970 football team for the Statesmen and was awarded the Joseph Abraham Training Room Award and the Babe Kraus Memorial Award as athlete of the year in 1971. A native of Endicott, N.Y., he played football, basketball and baseball at Union Endicott HS. Returning to the school in 1971, he taught chemistry until his retirement in 2004. From 1975 through 1992 he served as the offensive coordinator with the school's varsity team, and in 1993 through 2004 he served as the head coach. During his tenure the team won the NYSSWA state championships in both 1979 and 1989, and his teams played in the state playoffs in 1995, 1999, 2000 and 2003. Guccia also coached the girls softball team from 1978 through 1985, and in 1986 he started the varsity boys lacrosse program. During his time as head coach of football and lacrosse he was awarded Coach of the Year honors six times. Guccia resides in Endicott with his wife, Francene. They have three daughters and one grandson.

senior David Ortenberg and juniors Sam Lincoln and Michael Adler. Cornell will need to replace all-league graduates Ben Abramoff and Daniel DeSantis, but Mitch Ottinger, Avery Kovler, Josh Minsky, Matt Seymour, Phil Shapiro and Ben Wil-liams return and head up a large group of prospects with substantial experience. DEFENSIVELINE: The defensive line is an area of concern for the coaches following the gradua-tion of an outstanding group last season. Seniors Jim Gonos, a three-year starter, and Matt Goggin, along with sophomore Tim Kozen, will be joined by returnees Patrick Goring, Ian Kennedy, Dan Navo, Steven Richardson, Kevin Schmidt and Michael Zambrana. Gonos led the defensive line last season, posting 15 tackles on the year, and was named first-team All-CSFL for his efforts. A large group of newcomers will also vie for playing time. LINEBACKERS: Cornell will have one of its stron-gest group of linebackers in recent years, thanks mostly to the return of senior starter John Parke, an all-league performer last season, and sopho-more Clayton Hemminger. Despite missing some playing time last year, Parke still managed to lead the team with 42 tackles, including a team-high 18 solo tackles. Parke’s nine tackles for a loss were second in the league and first on the Cornell de-fensive squad, and he had 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Returning junior lettermen Daren Phillips and Andrew Jeong are proven veterans and will be expected to compete for a starting position. They will be joined by several outstanding newcomers for playing time at the two positions. DEFENSIVE BACKS: The Big Red graduated four of its five starting defense backs from last fall. A large group of 17 candidates will be led by Matt Malleo, Jeff Soffen, Chris Stanton and John Mackintosh. Bobby Napolitano, an outstanding performer in 2006, also returns after a year’s leave of absence. Lettermen Evan Levy, Chris Lamont, Ryan Saunders, Nick Tripoli, Dan Kubis and Jeremy Walco all lettered and should compete along with seven newcomers. KICKINGGAME: John Mackintosh handled the punting chores last season and Mitch Ottinger did the place kicking. Both did a fine job, with Mack-intosh earning two CSFL Special Teams Player of the Week awards during the season. Mackintosh ended his rookie season averaging 31.6 yards per punt, with seven landing inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Ottinger earned second-team All-CSFL honors after ranking second in the conference with 17 PATs. His 89 percent conversion of PATs was third in the league among kickers with at least 10 attempts. Backup kicker Phil Shapiro also returns and will be joined by four other candidates.

The Cornell sprint football team faced a re-building year in 2007, but proved to be up to the challenge as the team finished third in the CSFL and had a 4-2 overall record. The Big Red placed 12 players on the All-CSFL teams and, of those earning post-season selections, seven players, including five first-team selections, will return this season to lead Cornell in its attempt for its second CSFL title in three years. “All football teams approach every season filled with optimism,” said head coach Terry Cullen. “And as we enter our 70th season of sprint football here at Cornell, we are no different. The 2008 season has the potential to be a great year on the football field. The 2007 squad started slow but finished strong, and we are fortunate to have some key players from that team back again this season.” The offense and the defense will return six start-ers apiece, while special teams will benefit from the return of both kickers. The team will have some holes to fill at the running back, center and tight end positions on offense and the secondary and tackle positions on defense, but with 42 returning letter winners, the coaching staff should be able to find some quality replacements. OFFENSIVEBACKFIELD: Senior quarterback Zak Dentes is returning as a two-time All-CSFL selec-tion and will be backed up by sophomore letter winner Elliot Corey and freshman Timothy Bruhn. Despite missing a game due to injury, Dentes still managed to lead the league in passing yards (891) and completion percentage (59.3). He moved up to fifth on the all-time Cornell passing list (1,736 yards), and he has a reasonable shot of breaking Dave Zittel’s ’88 career passing record of 2,474 yards. The running back positions are wide open. Returning senior letter winners Brandon Stoller and Frank Lalezarzadeh, as well as junior DJ Schiavetta, are the front runners of a large group competing for the two backfield positions. RECEIVERS: The wide receivers are a talented group with a lot of depth. Senior Mike Brennan will be a four-year starter and was named first-team All-CSFL after leading the league last season with 409 reception yards. He also caught two touch-downs on the season, including a 74-yard pass in the opener, which was the longest play from scrimmage for the Big Red. The rest of this group includes returning starters Upal Sarker and Chris LaBerge, along with letter winners Josh Friedman, Christian Latimer and Dylan McCurrach. Last year’s outstanding tight end, Warren Liao, graduated, but senior lettermen Jack Rossman and Brendan Burns return along with a large group of newcomers. OFFENSIVE LINE: The Big Red returns three starters in what should be a solid group, led by

CSFL Champions 1934-2006

2007 All-Collegiate Sprint Football League Team

The Collegiate Sprint Football League

The Collegiate Sprint Football League, formerly known as the Eastern Lightweight Football League, was launched in 1934. Minutes from the 1939 league meeting provide an indication as to why light-weight football came about: “Football is a bodily contact sport in which weight is necessarily a signifi-cant factor...Efforts then to encourage participation among smaller and lighter men through weight classification would appear to be entirely justifiable.” The league was originally known as the Eastern 150-pound Football League. The 150-pound limit as the basis for being a lightweight seems to have come about as a carryover from the sport of rowing, in which the weight is used to distinguish between lightweight and heavyweight crews. The football weight limit was increased in 1967 to 158 pounds, in 1998 to 166 pounds, and in 2005 to 172 pounds. Between weigh-in and game time, a player may gain back weight. In 1967, the league name was also changed, and “Lightweight” was substituted for “150-pound.” In 1998, the league voted to change "Lightweight" to "Sprint." The five original members of the league were Lafayette, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers and Yale. Over the course of history, the following changes in the league’s makeup have taken place: Cornell entered in 1937; Yale ceased to play in 1942, Lafayette in 1943, Villanova in 1955, and Rutgers in 1990; Navy entered in 1946, Army in 1957; Columbia entered in 1955 and resigned in 1976. And in 2007, it was announced that Mansfield University would begin competition against league opponents in 2008 and would formally enter into league competition in 2009. For the 2008 season, the league games will be between Army, Cornell, Navy, Penn and Princeton.

coach of the team today, and when the position was endowed in 2001, Terry officially became the first Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football. Cornell won the league championship outright in 1978 (going 5-0 overall), 1982 (7-0 overall and 5-0 league record) and repeated the feat in 2006 (6-0 overall and 4-0 league record). And, in both 1984 and 1986 the team shared a three-way tie for the title with Army and Navy. In August 2008, it was announced that Bart Guccia would officially join the staff as co-head coach. He will assume a majority of the on-field coaching and gameday decisions, while Terry will continue his role of overseeing the program and serving as the program’s fundraiser. The past 70 seasons have held a lot of memories for the Cullens and their players, but perhaps no memory is as unique as the Cornell lightweight’s 1976 Christmas trip to Japan. The American Foot-ball Association of Japan had imported several U.S. pro and college teams to Japan for exhibition games to build support for the sport. However, when playing against the Japanese All-Stars, the U.S. squads had advantages in size, experience and coaching. During a visit to Japan for his son Tom’s wedding, Coach Cullen suggested that the Japanese invite a lightweight team to compete to ensure a close game that would be a beneficial publicity event. After much correspondence and the efforts of Cornell alumni in Japan, the Big Red lightweight football squad received an invitation to compete in the Japanese Silk Bowl. Treated to gala receptions and a whirlwind tour of the country, 57 Cornell players not only had an amazing cultural experience that covered a span of 15 days, but recorded an amicable 1-1 record against the Japanese All-Stars with a 9-0 win on Christmas Day in Tokyo and a 17-16 loss one week later in Nagoya. Though the sprint football team hasn’t offered its players trips to Japan every season, the team’s popularity is still enormous. The reason comes down to the philosophy that has kept the team alive for over 70 years. This sport is a unique op-portunity for everyone to play — the lightweights deny no one. With the emphasis on larger players in the varsity program, this sport serves a deserv-ing group of the student population that would not have the opportunity to compete on the collegiate level in football. The Cornell sprint football team, under excellent guidance from all of its coaches, but especially the Cullens, has served a need in the Cornell athletic community for many years now, and appears to be ready to continue well into the new century.

The Cornell sprint football team entered the 1998 season with a new name but the same philosophy which has kept it going for so many years. In 1998, the athletic directors of the Eastern Lightweight Football League voted to officially change the name to the Collegiate Sprint Football League in a renewed effort to increase expansion opportunities. Since it joined the league in 1937 through today, the spirit and purpose of Big Red sprint football has always remained the same — a varsity football program for the average-size American male. It is collegiate football with one restriction, every player must weigh 172 pounds or less on Wednesday of a game week. Sprint football had a humble beginning, as Har-vard and Yale fielded teams to provide additional entertainment before the varsity Harvard-Yale game. Penn was the school to popularize the sport, however, as its president coined the term “Football for All,” and encouraged participation in this unique game. Eight lightweight teams competed in 1931, but only two of these remain in existence today — Princeton and Penn. The East-ern Lightweight Football League was launched in 1934 with Yale, Penn, Rutgers, Lafayette and Princeton competing. Cornell joined the league in 1936. Playing under Alfred Wolff, Cornell recorded a 3-2 record in 1937, its first season of league com-petition. Wolff coached for the first five seasons of the lightweights, and Bob Grant took over in 1942 before World War II caused the lightweights to take a three-year break. In 1946, Bob Cullen revived the lightweight program and coached the team for one season. No one knew then how popular both the lightweight program, and its 1946 coach, would become. From 1947-57, Cornell had eight different coaches and not much of a stab at the league title as Navy dominated the conference. In 1958, Cul-len returned to the helm and became one of the greatest contributors to the sport of lightweight football. His teams were outstanding — between 1958 and 1975 the Big Red recorded 14 second- or third-place finishes in the league, and in 1975 won its first ELFL title with a 5-1 record that tied Princeton for a share of the top spot. Bob’s achievements were recognized in 1984 when he was inducted into the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame. Bob’s son, Terry, served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 1965 until the 1970s when he joined his father at the helm as co-head coach of the team. Terry continues to serve as head

The coveted Collegiate Sprint Football League championship trophy is named after Cornell’s own Robert L. Cullen, who began coaching sprint football in 1946.

In 1984, the Cullen name, long associated with Cornell football, was honored by the league when the championship trophy was named after Coach Bob Cullen. Further honors came for Bob when he was inducted into the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame that same year. He handled the head coaching duties for the lightweight program for 23 years, compiling an overall record of 80-52-5. The highlights of this impres-sive reign came in 1975 when the Big Red tied for the league crown and in 1978 when the championship was won outright with a 5-0 record.

Coach Cullen, a member of the Cornell athletic department for 53 years, passed away on Sept. 22, 1996. Although he officially retired in 1979, Cullen remained as co-head coach of the lightweight football team with his oldest son, Terry, up until his death. He continued to attend practice and was in the office the week before his death.

Former Cornell athletic director Charles Moore '51 said, "Bob Cullen was the epitome of a coach. At Cornell, lightweight football is Bob Cullen, and we will be eternally indebted to Bob for what he has accomplished over so many years."

The working relationship between the Cullens was ideal from all standpoints: the senior Cullen put his years of coaching experience to use in team practices and pregame strategy, while the younger Cullen handled the rigors of traveling and sideline pacing, along with day-to-day work at practice sessions.

With lightweight football, Cullen had the philosophy, "that we don’t cut anyone; they have a good time playing and we win our share of games.” He often said, "The thing is participation. If a kid comes

out, we accept him. We give him the chance to play college ball." This coaching philosophy has not only given Cornell lightweight football a good measure of success, but also has earned Cullen the esteem and affection of two generations of players.

Bob Cullen came to Cornell in 1942 and during his career he coached three levels of football—varsity, junior varsity and lightweight, two levels of lacrosse (varsity and freshman), junior varsity basketball and women's squash. In 1946, he revived the lightweight football program that was halted because of World War II. He served as head coach for that year only, returning the next fall as Cornell's assistant varsity coach in charge of defensive backs. In 1958 , he assumed the lightweight football head coaching duties, and the Cullen name has been synonymous with the program ever since.

A Palmyra, N.Y., native, Bob graduated from Hobart College in 1937, majoring in chemistry and biology, playing lacrosse and quarterbacking the football team. While working on his master's degree in chemistry at Syracuse University, Bob also played amateur and semi-pro football and baseball in the Rochester area. He later taught science and coached three sports at Fayetteville High School in Syracuse before coming to Cornell.
