Sprint 3 L. 2X
Target: Present tense. Do you cook? Yes, I do. / No, I don’t. Does he cook? Yes, he does. / No, he doesn’t.
Warm-up: Put Appendix 2A cards all mixed up and face up on the table. Tell students there are 4 categories / groups and they have 30 seconds to
put them into groups. Set the timer. What are the categories?
Presentation: Look at Appendix 2A “housework” category and take one card from it. “Cook. I sometimes cook. How about you? Yes? No? Ask
your classmate!” Elicit the question and answer. Accept any answers here. Present the target and remind them we ask Do you or Does he
questions to ask about everyday / every week activities.
Mechanical: Use Appendix 2B to practice repeating after you the questions like, “Do you cook? Yes, I do. Does your mother cook? No, she
doesn’t.” Then use Appendix 2C to practice repeating after you questions (again) and answers with different activities. “Do you play video games?
Yes, I do. Does your father mow the lawn? No, he doesn’t.” They might ask you what “mow the lawn” means. Show them the picture and say,
“It means ‘cut grass.’ Spell it out on the board for their reference.
Meaningful: Put Appendix 2B and 2C in separate piles take one card from each pile. Put Appendix 2D face up on the table so you can see all the
cards. They dictate the answers to the questions generated from Appendix 2B and 2C. Ask a question using the cards. “Does your father cook?”
Then find a matching card from the table and answer, “Yes, he does. He cooks Chinese food (card).” Some cards are for YES and the rest No.
Communicative: Use Appendix 2E to do an information gap activity in pairs. You can do this as a race if you think they can handle asking and
answering questions in complete sentences under fun pressure. Whoever finishes their list rings the bell. You have to have 4 students to make
this work.
Conversation: Pre-listening: Get students to ask each other, “Who are they? Where are they? What are they doing?” Students answer each other’s
questions. Give hints if necessary. Who are they? Are they friends? Business people? Where are they? Are they in an office? Supermarket?
Etc. In-listening: Get them to listen for what topic Machiko and Amy are talking about. Does Machiko work? How about Amy? What does she
do? Post-listening exercise: Do a repeating & shadowing exercise. Get them to reproduce the conversation.
Production: Tell students that they are looking for a new boy/girlfriend and they have to ask questions to find out about their classmates’ friends and
family to see if they can find a good match for you to date.
Closing: Do you study English every day?
