Success Tips:

Think about the following common mistakes when you proofread your paper. Are these mistakes that you make? Either way, consider all of them.

1. Using unnecessary announcements in the paper. Example: Ithink, I feel, I believe, this paper is about…

2. Repeating the same words in the same sentence or sentencesnearby. Example: In the past, I was in the choir in the past.

3. Using ambiguous words where you should be specific. Example:Things have not gone well for me in English class. They do not treatme fairly. (They who? What things?) I do not like it? (What?)

4. Run-on sentences: remember to use the correct punctuationwhen joining 2 or more independence clauses! (IC; IC IC;therefore, IC IC and IC) Or, shorten the sentences to recreatesimple sentences.

5. Use a comma after introductory words, phrases or clauses. Examples: However, In the past, because I was tired)

6. Pay attention to word endings! Is the word plural? Add “s” or “es”. Are you writing in the past tense? Add “ed” to the verb! Is the word a descriptive adverb? Add “ly” (I can barely see the computerscreen.)

7. Make sure that your noun and pronounce agree! Examples:There are a lot of books in my house, but I have not read all of

them. One of the students in the class was confused, and he was frustrated.

8. Watch out for words that sound the same but are spelleddifferently, depending on the meaning.

a. There, their, and they’re b. Your, you’rec. Hour, our, ared. To, too, twoe. One, ownf. Add, adg. See, Sea

9. Use correction punctuation: question marks, apostrophes, andquotation marks.

10. Make sure that you did not leave out a word. Reread for that, asoften what we hear in our head is not what we put down on thepaper! And, even when we read it, we still miss that we left out aword!

TRIO Student Support Services Metro Campus Awards Day

My name is Tiffany Stotts. I am a single mother of three boys, born and raised right here in the Greater Cleveland area.

I was brought up within a broken home. My siblings and I went to a Catholic school with yearly tuition in the thousands. However, eventually my Mom’s struggles became ours, resulting with my siblings and I having to enlist in public schooling.

Coming from a Catholic school background, I was terrified by public schools. The students walked around angry and frustrated about things I couldn’t quite comprehend. They were always ready for war with their classmates for little to no reason at all.

Our school was poverty-stricken and could not afford to replace the books damaged by students or ruined from water leaks. This led to lack of participation from students and no homework. Considering there was not enough books to circulate in the classroom, the chances of me passing the OGT were slim to none.

So, proceeding on with life, I began working and raising a family. After being laid off from yet another job, I realized that if I wanted to have a steady income, I would have to obtain a career instead of a job. I remember as a teen, I never understood the importance of education.

A degree was one of those things that adults bragged about. They repeatedly explained the connection of good grades leading to better pay. Unfortunately, it took me a few years after not graduating from high school to realize the importance of this.

When I began to perceive the value of what I was missing, I knew it was time to start a new pathway; that pathway was school. Les Brown once said, “insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.” With those words ringing in my mind, I took the necessary steps to receive my GED.

TRIO Student Support Services Metro Campus Awards Day

Continued from page 3

In 2014, I enrolled at Tri C as a first-generation student. A first-generation student is a student whose mother and father have yet to obtain a college degree. I had no previous family members to “show me the ropes” for my educational journey I was about to take on.

Before being accepted into TRIO Student Support Services I felt like a lost college student, as if I was fending for myself. This made me feel as if college was another hopeless thing. It wasn’t until another student introduced me to this amazing program that I felt I had some direction.

There are many reasons I feel the TRIO program had a huge influence on my success and completion of my degree. Becoming a work study student for Student Support Services gave me the confidence to speak up and speak out. It also broke me out of my “go to classes and go home” mentality.

From Zyanya Torres, our former director who hired me in, feeling I was a perfect fit for this position, TRIO opened doorways of networking I could have never imagined. My former advisor, David Karban, was there to lift me up with words of encouragement and assist with my academic planning. All the TRIO tutors, who provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge of various subjects, helped me advance in specific courses. Mrs. Smith, our office manager, was patient with me through all my complaining and stressing with lengthy assignments. On days I felt I was ready to give up, she reminded me of why I was here in the first place, and just simply remained her cheerful, bubbly self. In addition, a thanks to our new director, Cameron Redden, for the little pop ups in your office when I’m briefly saying hello, that turn into conversations of very useful advice and pieces of inspiration.

I never imagined having such an amazing support system. TRIO has made me believe that dreams do come true. It is astounding what can be created when opportunity meets potential. My family recognized my potential at a young age, and here at Cuyahoga Community College I was given opportunities.

I had the opportunity to be elected by my peers for senator-at-large for student government, which later led me to be nominated for the Secretary position. TRIO gave me the opportunity to serve as a Student Ambassador for this department, and the opportunity to share my story with you all here today.

In conclusion, even though I am a single parent residing in the low-income community, I do not let my address determine who I am. I have overcome many obstacles, cut out a lot of barriers, and let my past be my past. I have not let the lack of experience or knowledge hinder me from a specific position in my life. Because I have now earned my college degree, my children will not be first-generation children. I will change the outcome of my sons’ lives.

In Case You Missed It

Nursing and other allied health fields are very popular majors for students at Tri-C. The reasons are threefold: the pay is very good; the need for these professions will never go away; and you can go anywhere on the planet earth to work in the field. Some students select a major with little or no opportunity to speak to, and listen to people working in the field in which they wish to major.

With that in mind, Gerry Nemeth from the Metro TRIO SSS Program put together an event featuring a panel of medical professionals. The event was held on April 18, 2019 and by all accounts was a huge success.

Metro TRIO SSS Program Welcomes Medical Professionals

Black American Council Hosts Black Male Think Tank At Metro Campus

Dr. Lauren Scholle DPT, a Physical Therapist, Ms. Cathy Baldrey RRT, a Respiratory Therapist, and Ms. Mayra Pedraza RN, a Registered Nurse were the featured panelists. Ms. Pedraza is also TRIO Upward Bound and SSS alumnus. Each of the ladies gave a short overview of what their day-to-day duties are, followed by a Q & A session from the 18 students in attendance. Not

surprisingly, many of the questions dealt with how the medical professionals handled the college coursework when they were students.

Food, drink, and door prizes added to the overall enjoyment of the event. TRIO SSS does plan to have a similar event sometime in the Fall 2019 semester so watch our bulletin board and check your e-mail and other correspondence from SSS for the date and time.

The African American Male Think Tank, was held on Thursday, April 25th, in the MCC Metro Room. African American male staff, faculty, and administrators from across the college presented information and gave words of encouragement to the minority male students of Tri-C. Even the college president, Dr. Alex Johnson, gave the attendees a special address. Using elements of Design Sprint, student participants were able to identify four (4) key discussion topics for enrichment purposes centered on "Building the Cultural and Financial Wealth of Black Men."

Topic #1 Identifying Steps to Obtain Financial Wealth

Topic #2 Displaying a Wealthy Disposition in Your Presentation Skills

Topic #3 How To Continuously Support Your Community via a Growth Mindset

Topic #4 Resources That Assist with Cultural and Financial Wealth Building

Our Students

Yessica Jiminez is a TRIO student, Mandel scholar, and one of the first students in Tri-C’s new Operations Engineering Technology Program. She also won a spot on the 2019 LSAMP summer research project in Costa Rica.LSAMP, the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation, is a program of the National Science Foundation and has a grant program with Tri-C. Yessica is working this summer for 8 weeks on a research project for undergraduates though the Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica.

Ed Paul, Class Of 2021I would like to thank each and every one in the TRIO program for helping me achieve my goal of getting straight A’s in the Spring 2019 semester. I believe it would not have been possible if it weren’t for all of the TRIO team that taught me good computer skills, study habits, organizational skills, and a better understanding of what the professor is asking of me to complete my homework assignments. I would recommend TRIO to anyone who may be struggling or in need of a little guidance in achieving their goal of having a successful experience here at Tri-C. TRIO taught me that with some hard work, preparation, and good organizational skills, I can achieve my dream of receiving a college degree.

Congrats Yessica!!

Financial Aid News

Courses in Program

Federal regulations require that students only receive federal financial aid (Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Grant, Federal Direct Loans, Federal College Work-study) for courses that count towards their degree/certificate. Students must be enrolled in a financial aid eligible degree or certificate program and taking classes included in that program.

To comply with these regulations, Tri-C compares the student's registered coursework to the required courses outlined in the student's Degree Works audit. Registered courses not included in the audit will not be counted when determining federal aid eligibility and federal aid will be adjusted based upon only courses in the student's degree/certificate. Please note: English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, First Year Experience (GEN 1070) and remedial coursework (up to 30 credit hours) are eligible for federal aid but will not be included in the audit.

To maximize federal financial aid, students should review their declared major and register for courses listed in their degree/certificate as outlined in their Degree Works audit.

An example on how this impacts federal aid: a student is registered for 12 credit hours, which is considered full-time. When Tri-C compares the registered courses to those required for the degree/certificate, Tri-C determines only 9 of those credit hours are included in the student's degree audit. After this review, the student's federal financial aid will be adjusted to the 3/4 time amount (9 credit hours), even though the student is still registered full-time.

Watch your emails and your My Tri-C Space for any changes to financial aid policies.

Commencement Student Speaker

Though Dobyne had lived around the corner from the Sight Center for several years, he’d been unaware of the resources available to him. In addition to attending HSE preparation classes, he played on the Cleveland Scrappers – Ohio’s only beep baseball team. He eventually earned his HSE, thanks to encouragement from his instructor, Marjorie Pyles-Hearst, and Sight Center volunteers.

Antonio Dobyne grew up on Cleveland’s east side. At 16, he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa – a genetic eye disease that left himlegally blind. His vision failing,Dobyne dropped out of school in10th grade. A few years later, heenrolled in Tri-C’s Aspire program and began taking classes at theCleveland Sight Center.

The late Anthony Easley, director of client experience at the Sight Center, often told Dobyne: “Even though you have a disability, you are not disabled.” He took that statement to heart, and he will never forget it. Dobyne is currently pursuing an associate degree in small business management at Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus. He is thankful to the College for the amazing opportunities it has afforded him, and he looks forward to graduating in December 2020.
