East meets West in the form of Mann, a modernshape that infuses a quintessentially American silhouette with the unique historical signature of Japanese calligraphy. The frame’s unique contrast of volume and lightness draws upon the deliberate strokes of kaisho, an ancient artistic form that requires years of practice and extraordinary discipline to be mastered.

While the inspiration behind this familiar shape datesback centuries, the technology that makes it possibleis state of the art and limited to only a handful of thefinest Japanese eyewear manufacturers. Using DITA’s unique chemical annealing process; the end product is among the thinnest and lightest acetate on the market.

Meticulous craftsmanship and bold design join forcesin System-One, an exuberant “navigator” style thatunites the spirit of a classic aviator with the shape of atraditional square lens.

The frame’s muscular details evoke the tataraironworking method that allowed early Japanese blacksmiths to forge elaborate creations from clay blastovens; their legacy would go on to inspire a generationof modernist architects to incorporate Japanesecraftwork into the structures, furnishings, and objectsof the early 20th century, which influenced the frame’setched temples and intricately sculpted end-pieces.

Endurance 79 employs an innovative construction method that uses monofilament to hold three of the frame’s critical components in place: the molded plastic brow, titanium rim, and the lens—a technique that’s noteworthy for a frame of retro descent.

Finishing details, including a mechanical fastenerbehind the brow held together by a custom titaniumcrossbar, nod to the bold minimalism of 70s designand architecture in a way that captures the unbridledthrill of the open road.

ENDURANCE 79MIDO 2017

Luxurious materials and innovative manufacturingtechniques combine for a stunning tour de force in the form of Endurance 79, a resplendent heir to the high-octane eyewear of the 1970s.

This turbocharged aviator pays homage to the breathtaking feats of sport car endurance racers, who rose to international prominence in the 1970s by participating in grueling competitions that can last up to 24 hours. Endurance 79’s muscular titanium exoskeleton and temples resemble the pristine hardware of performance racing vehicles, while its etched acetate face recalls the sleek, reflective eyewear made iconic by champions of this daredevil sport.

into shape. DITA’s signature Talon mount design creates the illusion of a “floating” lens; these extruded Talon elements are bent into shape with knurling, or fine grooves, on the front, invoking elements from thehandcrafted metalwork of early telescopes.

Like those early astronomic instruments, each ofthe frame’s components is finely calibrated in themanufacturing process to minimize mechanical tensionand ensure a precise fit. The extraordinary fit and finishgives Axial and elegant yet mechanized character.

The glimmering brass and mirrored components ofEnlightenment-era scientific instruments inspired Axial,a sophisticated women’s aviator that represents theoptimal blending of form and function.

In order to achieve Axial’s carefully consideredfootprint, which is smaller than the traditional aviator,DITA devised a series of groundbreaking techniques toensure the frame’s precision mechanics would matchthe appeal of its architecture. That process began earlyin the design stage, when designers softened the aviatorform and reduced the size of the lens; the resulting proportions convey an intellectual character without sacrificing the frame’s sport edge.

The retro sensibility of Polymath traces its roots topostwar Europe, where the Teddy Boy movement ofearly-1950s England set the dual currents of fashionand music on a collision course that forever changedthe world.

Polymath’s subversive reinvention of a menswearstaple which celebrates the swaggering, working-classappropriation of the Edwardian wardrobe that characterized the Teddy Boy movement in its early days.
