Celebrating 70 Years!

Dear Patrons,

For 70 years, the world’s most sublime sounds have filled Symphony Hall in Springfield, Massachusetts. This season, we will celebrate our orchestra’s seventh decade of beautiful music with an especially eclectic program.

All of us at the Springfield Symphony Orchestra look forward to performing your favorites this season — from Tchaikovsky’s blissfully turbulent Fourth Symphony to Dvorák’s distinctly American New World Symphony. However, we have

also seized the start of our 70th year to expand our repertoire in exciting ways, with performances of Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony, Strauss’s Don Juan,

and Ravel’s Piano Concerto. Throughout the upcoming season, we will feature some of our most dynamic soloists in recent memory, including the

return of two renowned pianists, Jon Nakamatsu and Joyce Yang.

This season’s Pops Series is grounded in the traditions of Hollywood and promises to electrify our stage with music from the James Bond films, a live score of Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein, A Louis Armstrong Tribute with Byron Stripling and our traditional family favorite, “Home for the Follidays.” This year’s holiday celebration will include music from It's A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol and Home Alone, to name a few.

Kevin Rhodes, Music Director, Conductor

Springfield Symphony Orchestra Celebrating 70 Years

On the cover: Shotaro Mori, Bassoon; Kevin Rhodes, Music Director; Julie Marden, Violin; Anne-Marie Chubet, Violin and

Benny Koonyevsky, Percussion

As we look back on the storied past of the SSO, we are also eager to celebrate new beginnings backstage. Audrey J. Szychulski, former Executive Director of the Erie Philharmonic, will join the SSO as our new executive director. Named one of Erie, Pennsylvania’s “30 Most Extraordinary Women,” Audrey is sure to bring our exceptional symphony to even greater heights here in the Pioneer Valley. Please join me on opening night as we proudly welcome the newest member of our administrative team.

I am honored to usher our orchestra of venerable musicians into the symphony’s eighth decade. I hope to see you at each of our performances as we continue to deliver what I believe to be the best live music in Western Massachusetts. And, as always, please accept my gracious thanks for your support.

Kind regards,

Kevin Rhodes Music Director, Conductor
