Entropy and entropy production have recently be-come mathematical tools for kinetic and hydrody-namic limits, when deriving the macroscopic be-haviour of systems from the interaction dynamicsof their many microscopic elementary constituentsat the atomic or molecular level. During a specialsemester on Hydrodynamic Limits at the CentreÉmile Borel in Paris, 2001 two of the research cours-es were held by C. Villani and F. Rezakhanlou. Bothillustrate the major role of entropy and entropy pro-duction in a mutual and complementary manner andhave been written up and updated for joint publica-tion. Villani describes the mathematical theory ofconvergence to equilibrium for the Boltzmann equa-tion and its relation to various problems and fields,including information theory, logarithmic Sobolevinequalities and fluid mechanics. Rezakhanlou dis-cusses four conjectures for the kinetic behaviour ofthe hard sphere models and formulates four stochas-tic variations of this model, also reviewing known re-sults for these.
