It has been four seasons since Creation was performed at Shat- tuck Auditorium by the Waukesha Choral Union, and it is our sincere pleasure to revitalize the piece as our 2014 gift to the Greater Waukesha Community. This is our third concert in our 40 th Anniversary: Season of Light! Members bring their talents, time and energy to the stage. We all sing because the people, the arts organizations and businesses of Waukesha are behind us and know the importance of keeping the choral tradition alive and well! We perform on this occasion without two dear friends and fellow members. We mourn the loss of JoAnne Portz, Alto, and Alan Thompson, Bass, and send sincere condolences to their families. WCU was honored to sing at their celebrations of life. Read more about these remarkable people in your program. We want to see all of you, your families and friends, too, on May 3, 2014 at St. William’s Parish, for the last performance of our Season. WCU will showcase Sunrise Mass by contemporary composer Ola Gjeilo. It is moving and ethereal! Following that concert is a 40 th Anniversary Reception honoring past WCU singers and conductors and reliving memorable moments of 40 years of “Live Music, Classically Performed.” Watch for your mailing, or visit www.choralunion.org for the details. A B IT ABOUT CREATION - A B IT ABOUT TR ADITION

The Creation is among Joseph Haydn’s greatest works. Haydn visited England from 1791–1792 and 1794–1795 where he heard oratorios of Handel performed by major forces. These works inspired him to write a large oratorio using the musical language of the then modern classical style. Haydn labored on his masterpiece from October 1796 to April 1798.

He had received the text, based upon the creation account in the book of Genesis, the book of Psalms, and John Milton’s Paradise Lost, from his manager, Johann Peter Salomon, during his second visit to England. The oratorio has three parts; the first part depicts the elements; the second part, animals and man; and the third part, an earthly paradise. The soloists play the roles of the Archangels Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael in the first two parts, and Adam and Eve in the third part.

The world premiere was April 29 and 30, 1798 in Vienna at the palace of Prince Schwar-zenberg.

The original English version was translated into German by Haydn’s patron and friend Baron van Swieten. Interestingly, later he translated it back into English for performances in England. In 1800 Creation was published with both German and English texts. Today’s performance uses the more recent English translation by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. The purpose of this retranslation is to remedy the clumsiness of Baron van Swieten’s English as well as to unify the text with Haydn’s colorful musical language.

Waukesha Choral Union has been performing annually Handel’s Messiah or Haydn’sCreation as a gift to the community for over 3 decades. This longstanding tradition is funded by area businesses, foundations, and benefactors as well as through generous donations from patrons like you. The choir is made up of Choral Union members and community singers that have volunteered to be a part of this production. All facets of the greater Waukesha community come together to create, perform, experience, and enjoy. We hope that this free performance of Haydn’s masterpiece has inspired your love for great choral music.

Rena Archwemety Beyer from The Capital Times, in a classical review of Dvorak’s Stabat Mater wrote, “Weis gave a moving bass solo in ‘Fac ut ardeat cor meum’. From his strong entrance with the brass section to the emotion he conveyed, his interpretation of the text was outstanding”.

Mr. Weis embodied the title role of Figaro in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Opera program’s Le Nozze di Figaro of W.A. Mozart. In the Opera Review for the Wisconsin State Journal, Jay Rath stated “As Figaro, Thomas Weis has a voice that is warm and mellow but with an edge like good black coffee”.

Thomas has been an active voice teacher and performer at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin for the past thirteen years, offering recitals, master classes, and numerous faculty collaborations. Dr. Weis is a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), and has served on the Wisconsin NATS board. AL AN THOMPSON : A REMEMBR ANCE AND TR IBUTE

A TESTA MENT TO AL AN ’S GOOD WORK !

Sometimes life has a way of getting in the way of what we were meant to do. For Alan Thompson, his “calling” came as he wound down his career heading into retirement.

Alan, who sang with Waukesha Choral Union for more than a decade, passed away Jan. 6 at the age of 72 after complications from heart surgery. He was a vibrant member of our choir who lent us not only his vocal talents, but his organizational and computer skills as a music librarian.

With a long-time interest in music and seeing his wife, Linda, sing in WCU for a short time, Alan decided to join the choir.

“He really had a happy life,” Linda said. “Singing became a passion of his.” She noted that Alan also was a member of the Vernon Presbyterian Church Choir.

Alan Thompson was much more, of course. Born in Massachusetts, he earned multiple degrees in chemistry and worked in higher education. Most recently, he worked from 1978 to 2011 in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Above all, he cherished family and travel, combining both whenever he and Linda had the opportunity.

We salute Alan Thompson, a man of many interests and skills. We are blessed to call him an alum of Waukesha Choral Union – and a fondly remembered friend.

When the community heard the sad news of Alan Thompson’s death, it did not take long for a number of people to step forward and show their appreciation for his many contributions to the Waukesha Choral Union by donating to WCU in Alan’s memory. As of the beginning of March, here is a list of those gifts. A complete record will be included in our May 3 program’s list of contributors. We sincerely thank them all.

FRED AND JOANN PORTZ : AN APPRECIATION

JoAnn Portz passed away on July 13, 2013, preceded in death on Sept. 3, 2010 by her husband, Fred. The Waukesha couple played an integral role in Waukesha Choral Union’s artistic and financial success. In fact, it is because of their generosity that you are able to enjoy today’s concert. Please learn more about this wonderful gift from an extraordinary couple as described by Tom Custis, WCU’s former president:

The couple behind “Handel’s Messiah” and “Creation”

In the early years of the Waukesha Choral Union, an idea was hatched to put on a community concert. The chorus was to perform “Handel’s Messiah” and admission would be free. Artistically, it would be desirable to have professional soloists, as well as professional orchestral accompaniment.

But that would take money. Fred Portz, an erstwhile bass in the chorus, quickly became its champion. He personally accepted responsibility for providing and raising funds to make this happen.

Early on, the tradition was expanded to include an invitation to all singers within the community to join in the uplifting experience of performing this wonderful work. Many years later, in order to provide some variety, it was decided that “Haydn’s Creation” could be performed as an alternative.

Throughout, the traditions of free admission, inclusion of community singers, and presentation at the highest artistic level were continued; and Fred’s support never faltered. Fred’s wife, JoAnn, was also in the Choral Union, and joined Fred in the active support of this annual project.

When Fred passed away, JoAnn continued supporting the project with her voice and her financial support. Even now that they have both passed away, the Choral Union continues to receive financial support in their memory.

It is no overstatement to say that we would not be here today enjoying one of the world’s great musical accomplishments, were it not for Fred and JoAnn Portz. It is for that reason that the Board of Directors of the Waukesha Choral Union has voted to designate this annual event the Fred and JoAnn Portz Community Concert. We hope that you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoy performing it; all with the fondest of memories of our friends Fred and JoAnn.
