Springtime Lesson Plan For Reference OnlyTeaching goal: Review the names of the four seasons first. Point out that it’s springtime now. Ask the students to tell the differences between the four seasons to the class. Emphasize the meaning of the Earth’s birthday and the connection with spring. Teach students the song for spring “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”. Direct the class to do the “easy experiments with bean sprouts”. And then play the game “Let’s Release Insects” with students. Lastly, pass the worksheet to the students and ask them to do the activities with the worksheet in class. Reward the students who have done good jobs during class. Teaching props: CD of “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”, CD player A hand-made lyrics poster of the song “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” Bulletin paper Activity sheet (see below), teachers should make enough copies for each student. Teaching process: Warm Up: 1. Divide the students into several small groups. Ask the class to discuss the distinguishing features of four seasons. 2. Have one student from each group stand up and tell the class the result of discussion. 3. Discuss the opinions of each group and tell the students the differences between seasons. Presentation: 1. Tell the students that spring is coming. Here are the signs of spring: Flowers are in full bloom, new leaves have sprouted, bugs are out, and birds have returned from the south. You’ll also find some other signs of spring: Grass begins to grow, birds build nests, and bears and other sleeping animals wake up. Farmers and gardeners plant seeds in the spring.

3. Tell the students there are several festivals in the springtime: April Fool’s Day, Passover (a holiday for Jewish people), Easter, and Earth Day.

4. Explain the meaning of Earth Day to the students: spring is a season to be grateful, especially to thank the earth, the planet which has been taking care of creatures. For this reason, protecting the earth is the way to go.

5. Tell the students one of the easiest ways to improve the situation of our environment is by planting plants. Direct the class to do the “easy experiments with bean sprouts”. You may prepare a camera to record the process and the results of the easy experiments for each group.

6. Play the game “Let’s release insects!” with your students. Don’t forget to reward the students who recognize all the names of insects correctly to encourage them for continuing to learn English.

7. Now give students the activity sheets and ask them to do the activities with the sheets in class.

Activity Sheet 2Who’s The Fast? Instruction: Give each student an activity sheet and ask them

cut the cards out from the sheet. They’ll now have sets of the word cards. Pair off the students and ask them hold the cards and then stand back to back. After both of them shout “1, 2, 3”, they turn round and show one of the cards to each other at the same time. Both the students have to shout what’s on the picture on the other’s card in three seconds. Students themselves could be the judges. Whoever shouts out the correct answer first wins the reward.

Wrap Up:1. Review the meaning of Earth Day with students.2. Ask students go to the board and write down the names of four

seasons and insects. For the basic level class, you may show them the pictures of the words and ask the students speak out the name of each picture.

3. Put the plants from the bean sprouts somewhere in or out of the classroom with enough sunshine. The plants express the spirit of the coming of spring, and teach students to plant is also the best way to educate kids about the importance of protecting the Earth by doing the right things.
