MARSHALL ELEMENTARY JUMPS ROPE FOR HEART
Do you know of an event or
story that should be covered
in next month’s issue of
Tiger Times?
If so, contact Miss Hill at
By Vedha Masuraha
Have you wondered what Jump Rope for
Heart is all about? I got an exclusive interview with
Mrs. Lepant, the coordinator of Marshall Elemen-
tary’s Jump Rope for Heart program. “I like Jump
Rope for Heart because it ties in with our Jump Rope
unit. It’s educational and fun!” says Mrs. Lepant.
This year’s Jump Rope for Heart program was held
on Monday, February 22nd. This event was organized
by Physical Education teachers, Mrs. Lepant and Mr.
Crawford. It took place in the gym where students
from all grade levels jumped rope with their class.
Each class was split up into teams. Students from
Marshall Elementary raised money to donate to the
program. As a school, we raised $23,790.50. In
which year did we raise the most money? In 2015,
we raised $26,915. That is a lot of money!
What attracts people to participate in Jump
Rope for Heart? Mrs. Lepant thinks we like it be-
cause we reach our goal, help other people, participate
with our grade, and of course the prizes. It’s also for
a great cause. We are looking forward to next year’s
event!

Heads up! Spring Intramurals, organized by
Mrs. LePant, started on February 8, 2016.
The students are playing beach ball volley-
ball this spring. There are 5 teams playing in
the league with about 15-20 kids on each
team. Miss LePant said, “all of the teams are
playing very well, but they could improve a
lot.” The games run from Monday through
Thursday. The last regular season game is
on Thursday, March 17th. Playoff games
start on Monday, March 21st. The students
will play against the staff on March 31st. If
you did not get a chance to join in the fun
this time, be sure to sign up next year!
100 DAYS OF SCHOOL, ISN’T THAT COOL?!
By Sophie Azar, Alison Lee, and Ella Zimmer
100 days of school?!? That's a long time! Can you believe that many days have gone by already? Wow!
The 100th day of school at Marshall Elementary occurred on February 1, 2016. Classes throughout the school celebrated this
special day in a variety of ways.
In first grade, Mrs. Karagory’s class created animals and patterns using the numbers 1 and 0. The students contributed to a
class piggy bank. We talked to Mrs. Karagory about this and she said, “I feel that the 100th day of school is monumental because
it marks 100 days that my students are smarter!”
Kate Azar in Mrs. Karagory’s class said her favorite project was, “when we used a 1, a 0, and another 0 to make something. I
made a girl with a headband with 1, and earrings with the 0s. It was my favorite project because it got our creative juices flowing
in a fun and entertaining way.”
Second grade also celebrated the 100th day of school. Mrs. Bradley’s class created posters using 100 objects. Second grader,
Jack Zimmer, used stamps to create his poster. Jack said, “I really liked looking at other kid’s posters on 100 things. I made a
poster on 100 stamps, and it was really hard. I’m really happy that it’s the 100th day because we only have about 80 days left or
something.”
If you are looking to celebrate the 100th day of school next year, you could suggest these ideas to your teacher or do them at
home with friends or family.
Raise $100 Make a necklace out of 100 Cheerios
If I had $100 essay Make a paper clip chain out of 100 clips
Plant 100 seeds Name 100 animals
Do a 100 yard dash Name 100 countries
Do 100 jumping jacks Have a silent period for 100 seconds
Think about what would happen 100 years from now Create 100 equations to equal 100
Create a 100-recipe cookbook Think about 100 places you want to go
Learn 100 words from a different language List 100 things that didn’t exist 100 years ago
The 100th day of school sure was a lot of fun! It was full of really cool and interesting projects until the day was done!

On Sunday, February 7, 2016, hundreds of
people gathered at Taylor Alderdice High
School in the auditorium. They were there to
celebrate Chinese New Year by watching
performances and eating Chinese food. This
year is the year of the monkey. There were
many types of performances, and people
served Chinese food at dinner. They cele-
brate this because they want people to under-
stand Chinese New Year, and to be able to
celebrate it, because it was the day before
Chinese New Year.
Mrs. Rusek loves getting to
know and teach so many amazing
kids. To her, it is a very rewarding job
because she loves watching each and
every student grow in school and on
their own.
Lots of people enjoy their free
time, and Mrs. Rusek loves hers. She
really likes spending time with her two
girls, Lindsey and Sydney. She also
enjoys reading, bowling, golfing,
camping, and relaxing on the beach.
“I would like all students to
know that whatever you dream of do-
ing you can achieve. I am living proof
of that.”

Do you know Mrs. Rusek? If
you have ever wondered who she is,
other than a teacher, then you’ll soon
find out!
Mrs. Rusek has been teaching for 7
years. She has known that she was
meant to be a teacher since she was
little. “I remember having babysitting
jobs as a teenager, and I would always
plan a little craft, puzzle page, or mini
lesson to do with the kids,” says Mrs.
Rusek.
This fourth grade teacher went
to LaRoche College. She was inspired
by her mom to follow her dream and
eventually become a teacher. Her mom
was a teacher at Deer Lakes High
School. Mrs. Rusek says, “She has
always encouraged me to follow my
dreams and has been my biggest cheer-
leader through all of it.”

SAY GOODBYE TO THE
FLU BLUES
By Megan Manesiotis and Christine Silvester
Many kids go to the nurse February to May, mostly for
the flu. We caught up with Nurse Allen, who gave us some in-
formation about the flu. Some symptoms of the flu are feeling
ache, tired, and having a temperature of over 100.0 degrees
Fahrenheit. There are ways to prevent the flu, like getting a
vaccine, washing your hands, and not touching your eyes, nose
and mouth. Don’t be afraid to stay home if you have those
symptoms.

Valentine's Day is fun-love is in the air! People get flowers for their loved ones, such as daughters, moms, or girl-
friends. At Marshall Elementary School,l we celebrated with a Valentine’s Day party on Friday afternoon, February 12th. We
gave our valentines to everyone in their creative boxes, we made a craft, had a snack, and played a game. There was even a photo
booth set up in the cafeteria for the 5th graders. Avery Hoffman and Ella Zimmer in 5th grade agree that the party was, “really
interesting and exciting.” Fourth grader, Anna Wheeler, said described her party as, “Fun! We played a game where you had a
basketball net over your head and you throw basketballs in it.” It was sweet!

Love is in the air! On January 29th, Q and U walked hand in hand to mark the beginning of their lives together.
The wedding had begun and the “Marshall” of the wedding, Mr. Thornton, gave his speech. Ten beautiful minutes later, Mr.
Thornton finished his speech and the room was filled with applause. Q and U put their rings on each other and a cheer ran
through the crowd. Then, the festivities began! Mrs. Johnson was singing One Hand, One Heart while Mrs. DeVivo accom-
panied her on the piano. The audience swayed to Mrs. Johnson’s melodious voice and Mrs. DeVivo’s lovely melodies. A
little while later, Q and U were swept into a wagon and paraded around the room. The cameras flashed as happy parents
smiled. The festivities ended then and there. It was another successful marriage with everyone contented to their heart’s
will.
“It was kind of awkward when we had to marry each other.” -Monet Shields and Henry Davis

Dear Miss Advice,
How do you get rid of last minute jit-
ters before a test? I have tried every-
thing and nothing works.
Deep breathing does nothing and nei-
ther does listening to music! I always
study the night before, but when the
teachers pass out the test I always feel
like I forgot everything! Please
help!!!!!!!!!!
-Jitter Critter
Dear Jitter Critter,
Try thinking positive thoughts, such as
“I can do this.” or “I studied for this.
I'll be fine.” Of course, it is always
important to study, so be sure to, or you
most likely won't feel as confident.
If the butterflies still won't stop, then
try asking a parent, guardian, or teacher
for some help.
Good luck!
-Miss Advice
Dear Miss Advice,
Help!
What's the best way to study for a test?
I have tried using multiple study meth-
ods, but haven't found any ways that
work for me. I've tried flashcards, and
worksheets. Reviewing packets and
books didn't really help either. The
subject that I find it hardest to study for
is spelling. Please send advice!
-Study Shortage
Dear Study Shortage,
Try having someone at home call out
the spelling words, and you write them
down. Try printing out pages from
your book and highlighting or underlin-
ing important information, then study-
ing those marked. If you are not sure
about what the important information
is, then ask your teacher if you are cor-
rect. Hopefully these methods will
work!
-Miss Advice
Dear Miss Advice,
How do you finish lots of homework in
one night? I have activities like basket-
ball, swimming, etc. I have a busy
schedule with lots of homework to fit
in.
-Homework Not Happening
Dear Homework Not
Happening,
Try putting off playing with friends to
make time to study and do your home-
work. Don't put off doing homework
until the very last minute, because if
you do, you most likely will be in a
scramble to get it done right before
when it's due. Also, when you are go-
ing to your activities, try bringing a
pencil in the car so you can do your
homework then, and save your time at
home.
Best of luck!
