DEAR TRAVELER,

In 2016 we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the pioneering 1966 citizen explorer expedition to Antarctica by my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad. In 2017, we will be celebrating his 1967 pioneering feat: leading the first laymen expedition to Galápagos, and playing an instrumental role in establishing the tourism policies that are the still the foundation of the National Park’s guidelines today.

We respect our heritage, are proud of the achievements we’ve recorded during our past 50 years, but are focused on the future with considerable excitement, given the newness and innovation ahead.

This season we’ll inaugurate two new ships: National Geographic Endeavour II has been completely re-fitted to offer the best expedition experience in the Galápagos Islands. And National Geographic Quest, purpose-built in the U.S—on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA to be exact—will begin her expedition career in British Columbia and the San Juan Islands, before ranging as far south as Belize.

In our 50 years, many changes have happened in travel—where do we as travelers seek to go? What do we choose to avoid? Do more of us travel to relax, or to seek inspiration and activity? Do we travel to know more, to feel a greater connection with nature, or to see places that still retain cultural and historical integrity? Perhaps it’s all of the above.

And with whom? Do we choose to travel with our families, our friends, or on our own? I certainly have seen a vastly greater desire for extended community, whether it be the community our guests take with them, or discover in seeking new like-minded others, inevitably drawn, like themselves, to this style of travel. You, inevitably, have distinct views on all of these subjects.

What I can offer you is the fact that we have, over this past half a century, developed a deep understanding of what’s possible, and what matters to people. Whether it’s exploring the High Arctic where the National Geographic Explorer spends most of the summer; the Galápagos Islands, always in season, always full of wonder for people of all ages; or Baja California, often referred to as the Mexican Galápagos. Discovering a fresh perspective on Europe aboard the National Geographic Orion. Or steeping in the deep pleasures of the sailing yacht Sea Cloud, a destination in her herself. In all cases, our commitment is to provide you with the most thoughtful, fulfilling time we possibly can.

So, please join us as we head out during the finest seasons for travel—to explore the world’s wonder and mystery.

All the best,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

“There is something about summer in the Highlands & Islands of Scotland that is addictive. Clarity of air enchants, green islands and mountain fastnesses beckon in watery sunshine, white-tailed eagles spiral above romantic castles. From the megalith builders of prehistory to the present-day founders of the Iona Community, this has been a ‘thin place’, where the boundary between the mundane and the transcendent has seemed accessible. And the whisky is incomparable!”

The Arctic is the ultimate vacuum that attracts. Grand in scale, its sky, mountains, fjords, and expanses of ice are magnificent, bigger than big. It has fired the imagination of explorers for centuries. Tantalizingly blank, the Arctic is one of the last regions to have eluded the Google Earth cartographers: you can search but little results. It remains a geography that insists on being discovered in person. Venture to Iceland with us and you’ll see what you want to, and what you never imagined. Plan to genuinely experience Iceland, not its tourist hordes.

“I found Svalbard thrilling on many levels. There is the sheer exhilaration of being above 80 degrees North—just hundreds of miles from the North Pole—and watching the sun circling well above the horizon 24 hours a day. For lovers of ice and Antarctica, Svalbard offers the same starkly beautiful vistas of massive glaciers, ice caps, and mountains. And Svalbard boasts something that Antarctica doesn’t—at least four centuries of human exploration.”

“We watched as the ‘Herring Ladies’ cut fish and stacked them neatly in barrels of salt. We could not understand the Icelandic language but they chatted about life, much the same as any other workers would as they go about their daily tasks. When herring was packed, it was time for song and dance, and the group broke out into song accompanied by the traditional instrument of choice, the accordion...and soon our guests were pulled onto the dance floor and all were on their feet, dancing away.”

“Ilulissat is Greenlandic for ‘icebergs,’ and they were everywhere. The calving events at the head of Icy Fjord produce an estimated 10% of all the icebergs calved from the Greenland icecap, making it the most productive glacier in the world. It’s thought that the iceberg that sunk Titanic had its origin here, but no one will ever know for sure.”

“I am a child of the Canadian Maritimes, so this is my psychic home and my inspiration. Nova Scotia, where I grew up, is the setting for two of my novels, Burden of Desire and Portrait of Julia, and my memoir of childhood, Wordstruck; and it remains the doorway to my imagination. I spend summers there in our house on the Atlantic coast. So I am steeped in the history and romance of this corner of the New World settled by Europeans as early as 1604, my mother’s family arriving in 1750. I grew up with the sea. The sea was my father’s work on Royal Canadian Mounted Police patrol boats during Prohibition chasing rum-runners over the waters we will sail. In WWII, he commanded a series of warships protecting convoys in the Battle of the Atlantic. My brother Hugh became an Admiral in the Canadian Navy, and I am an amateur cruising sailor. So, the sea is in our bones, and I love to tell the stories of how it shaped four centuries of our history.” —Robert MacNeil

“Later, cloaked in the light of our dying fire, we listened to the creak of cactuses swaying in the wind… Somewhere out in the boulders, a coyote wailed beneath a spray of cold stars… ‘This is the stuff that keeps you coming back to Baja,’ Norman said quietly. ‘The primitiveness, the aloneness of it. Once upon a time our Expedition Leader was talking to a guest aboard Sea Cloud exploring the Greek Isles, and he mentioned the day’s activities among the antiquities. She said, half-jokingly, “Oh, seeing Greece? That’s just icing on the cake. I’m here for Sea Cloud.” The ship with a soul, Sea Cloud is the opposite of any other ship in our fleet, where the emphasis is on what’s outside the ship’s confines. Authentic. Historic. Elegant. Sea Cloud. Oh, and she also offers interesting itineraries, while also providing the drama of seamanship and old-word luxe.

TERMS & CONDITIONS Reservations: To reserve your place, an advance payment is required at the time of reservation. The per person advance payment amount varies by program, and is outlined in our brochures, as well as on our website. Holiday departure dates and certain longer voyages may carry additional advance deposit requirements due to high demand for these voyages. Payment is accepted by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or by check.

Receipt of your initial payment indicates your acceptance of our complete Terms and Conditions. We require written notice at the time of reservation for any physical condition, diet, or treatment requiring special attention.

Once your reservation is confirmed, we urge you to use your personalized online account for important information to help you prepare for your voyage. Managing your documents online will facilitate fast and accurate communication, and allow you to provide us with pertinent details we require, in order to complete your reservation. Your online account gives you access to your Expedition Guide, which includes valuable information specific to your voyage. You can also use your online account to make easy payments, view recommended flights and reading material, packing list, and so much more.

Final Payment: For expeditions aboard all ships with the exception of Explorer and Orion, final payment is due 90 days prior to departure. For expeditions aboard Explorer and Orion, payment is due 120 days prior to departure.

Payment schedules may vary for Holiday departures and certain longer voyages, due to high demand for these voyages. We reserve the right to cancel your reservation if payment has not been received by final payment due date.

Travel Protection Plan: We recommend that you take advantage of our Travel Protection Plan. This plan offers comprehensive coverage to protect you from cancelation fees, costs incurred due to trip delays/interruption, damaged or lost luggage, medical assistance, and evacuation during your travels. Our Travel Protection Plan is available for U.S. and Canadian residents only, and may be purchased any time prior to final payment due date. If you are not satisfied for any reason, you may return your plan within 10 days after purchase. Your premium will be refunded if cancelled within 10 days, provided you have not already departed on the trip or filed a claim. When so returned, the coverage under the plan is void from the original date of purchase.

Smoking Policy: Smoking is allowed only in designated outdoor areas.

Entry and Visa Requirements: All guests are advised to verify travel documents (passport/transit visa/entry visa) for the country through which they are transiting and/or entering. Reliable and most current information regarding international travel can be found by contacting the consulate/embassy of the country(s) you are visiting or transiting through. We will not be responsible if you are denied entry or transit into a country if you are unable to provide valid documents as per the country’s requirement.

Responsibility and Other Terms & Conditions: Certain other provisions concerning, among other things, limitations of Lindblad Expeditions’ and the National Geographic Society’s liability for loss of property, injury, illness or death during the voyage will be provided to all guests on the ship’s ticket sent prior to departure, and are also available on our website at www.expeditions.com/terms, or upon request. By registering for a trip, the guest agrees to all such terms and conditions.

Note: Itineraries and prices listed in this brochure are valid as of publication date, and are subject to change. Under normal conditions, the total expedition cost is guaranteed at the time of booking. However, the published price is determined far in advance of initial departure on the basis of then-existing projections of fuel and other costs. In the event we determine that current costs create an unsustainable financial model, including but not limited to increases in the price of fuel, currency fluctuations, increases in government taxes or levies, or increased security costs, we reserve the right to pass on these costs to you, to cover such unexpected increases. We will always provide a transparent accounting of the reason for such an increase in costs.
