SPRUCE UP YOUR HOMESpring Projects That Are Sure To

Warmer weather and sunnier days are on their way and many homeowners are itching to begin home improvement projects. If you are one of them, consider these areas of your home when prepping for spring.

Windows and doorsIf your windows felt drafty this winter, it may be time for replacements. Replace your old single-pane windows with energy-efficient double-pane windows. Double-pane windows can help you save on heating and cooling bills; they help keep the temperature in your home consistent year-round and help protect your furniture, carpet and window treatments from the sun’s fading rays.

Need to bring some fresh color into your home but don’t want to paint? Try updating your blinds or shades. From different styles to colorful fabrics, blinds and shades can add a pop of color to your room. Motorized blinds and shades with Pella Insynctive technology come in more than 300 style and color options so you can find the right fit for your home’s decor.

Your front door is a major focal point of your home, enhancing your home’s curb appeal. Make a bold statement and improve your home’s energy efficiency with a new ENERGY STAR-certified front door. Consider options with decorative glass accents, and sidelights to add more natural light while maintaining a sense of style and privacy.

Gutters and downspoutsExcess water near your foundation can cause thousands of dollars in damages. Luckily gutter cleaning and downspout repair is fairly low-cost.

After all the snow melts, you’ll want to make sure to clean your gutters and clean out any debris that may keep spring rains from flowing freely through your downspouts. Along with replacing damaged gutter or downspout sections, you’ll also want to make sure you have added downspout extenders to ensure water is draining far away from your home’s foundation. Extenders should reach at least five feet into your yard.

Gutter covers can also be added to minimize debris from gathering in gutters throughout the year.

Air conditioningIt may be a few more months before you’re turning on the A/C, but spring is a great time to start getting your cooling system ready.

Often you have to call in the pros for air conditioning work but things like spraying off any overgrowth or debris, cleaning coils and changing filters are fixes you can easily do on your own. Also, trim back any shrubs that are near by. Keeping the outdoor unit clean from debris will boost your A/C system’s efficiency.

You can keep part of your indoor duct work clean by removing register covers and wiping clean any of the visible parts. You’ll need to contact a professional for a full duct cleaning.

Personal InjuryFamily Law

141020085506

Kaufman & McPherson, PLLC has an origin that dates back to 1992. Kevin Kaufman, a native of Bridgeport, WV, started his career with Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation and Columbia Natural Resources after earning his undergraduate, MBA and law degrees at West Virginia University. In 1987, Mr. Kaufman left the Columbia system to form the Charleston law firm Pierson & Kaufman, and remained with the firm until returning to north central West Virginia in 1992.

Having relocated to his hometown, Bridgeport, Mr. Kaufman opened the Law Offices of Kevin S. Kaufman which later became Kaufman & McPherson, PLLC. The firm is now comprised of five attorneys who concentrate their work in the fields of Personal Injury and Family Law. Since its founding, the firm has adopted a “clients first” philosophy, and the entire staff works diligently to achieve the best possible outcome for every single case.

Kaufman & McPherson makes an uncompromising commitment in personal injury cases. They know that individuals may by scared and confused when faced with the inability to work, medical bills and challenges of daily life. Mr. Kaufman takes pride in knowing that his firm is able to comfort clients by reducing often complicated legalese to easy-to-understand, plain English. Every client receives honest, experienced and effective legal representation that helps individuals move from injury and hardship to a much improved quality of life.

Auto and truck accidents can have a devastating impact on individuals and families, and the after-effects often change lives forever. According to Mr. Kaufman, “We fight zealously to hold the negligent party responsible for their actions. We are fearless and determined to secure for our clients the rewards needed and deserved following an accident.”

Several of the firm’s attorneys are highly-skilled in handling family law issues. Complications experienced by parents and children in some cases can cause immeasurable pain. Kaufman & McPherson knows how to help resolve these complex and stressful legal matters.

There are two approved family law mediators on the staff who can offer representation in divorce, child custody, adoption, guardianship, child support and spousal support cases. Mediation is almost always preferable to litigation, and the firm’s experienced mediators can offer suggestions that could afford a much preferred outcome than a court-ordered solution.

Kaufman & McPherson confidently represents clients throughout West Virginia in personal injury matters and an eighteen-county area of north central West Virginia in family law matters. According to Mr. Kaufman, “the firm’s commitment is to providing clients with the utmost care and quality of service.”

It’s that time of year - time to dust off your patio furniture, fill your planters and set up to spend the spring outdoors. While expanding an outdoor space is a top renovation project for homeowners and renters alike, it does not have to induce a state of pre-spring stress. With a few simple tips, you can create an outdoor space that adds value and comfort to your home.

Focus on your front entrance“Enhance your home’s curb appeal by brightening up your front entrance,” says The Home Depot’s Director of Trend and Design, Sarah Fishburne. “A coat of brightly colored paint on your front door can redefine the look of your home.” This year, go bold with your color choice - try coral, tomato red, teal, aqua, violet, pistachio and cobalt. Add a wreath, doormat, kick plates and new door hardware to complete the look. Knobs and handles with a burnished bronze finish also hide fingerprints and don’t show tarnish as easily. After all, a fabulous front entrance can make a powerful first impression.

Design your dream deckThe base of any great outdoor space is a clean slate. Start with a good scrub and power wash. Echo the feel of your interior to create a cohesive style that makes it easy for you to move indoor decor outside when you are hosting. Start by creating a sense of space with an arbor or trellis. Use colors, furniture finishes and seasonal accessories that complement each other, such as a beautiful custom patio set from Brown Jordan. If you’re unsure where to start, use an online patio planning tool to make it easier to customize the look. Mix and match patterns, textures and sheens for a designer-inspired

finish. For urban dwellers in apartments or small spaces, you can create a great outdoor space by installing a vertical garden filled with succulents and a small cocktail table and chairs.

Accessorize and add color“Accessories aren’t just about making a fashion statement,” says Fishburne. “In fact, adding finishing touches to your front and back porch creates a polished look and feel.” Not only does a weather-resistant, indoor/outdoor rug anchor furniture just like in a living room but it also adds a punch of pattern and color to complement your outdoor furniture. Adding big, bright flowers, such as red geraniums is a simple and cost effective way to brighten up your outdoor space. Not a gardener? Not a problem. Achieve beautiful results with minimal effort by using Drop ‘N Bloom pre-mixed containers of bright spring flowers. For additional pop, whitewash or paint your tired planters with this season’s hottest colors - pollen yellow or aquatic green.

Plan for a partyWhat’s a great outdoor space without others to share it with? Set up your space to host parties all season long. Don’t leave your guests in the dark - hang up string lights or place solar lights around the patio to get the party going. Create ambiance and a cool conversation piece with a fire pit or add colorful throw pillows for your guests to sit back and relax. Finally, set yourself up for a season of signature meals by planting an herb garden. Make the night more interactive by inviting your guests to help pick herbs that will complement the meal.

5 SMART UPGRADESFor the Most Used Rooms In Your Home

Kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms are typically the rooms in any home that get the most use, which could also be why homeowners, when surveyed, consistently cite those rooms as the ones they most want to renovate. It makes perfect sense to upgrade the rooms where you spend the most time, but in high-traffic areas, you can’t afford to make changes just for the sake of cosmetics. You want improvements that can enhance your enjoyment of a room and its functionality.

Here are five smart improvements to make in the rooms users of Ranker.com voted as the most popular ones in their homes: kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and game rooms.

1. Add natural lightMost rooms in the home look better and are more functional in natural light, and more daylight can help reduce the need for artificial light. What’s more, there’s no arguing the positive mental and physical health effects of natural light. Daylight

stimulates the body to produce Vitamin D and boosts brain levels of serotonin, which is thought to be associated with positive moods.

Adding skylights is a practical, cost-effective and attractive way to bring more natural light into virtually any room. Remote-controlled, solar-powered fresh-air skylights from Velux America provide not just natural light, but passive ventilation, a real plus in kitchens and baths. Adding solar powered blinds, in designer colors and patterns, increases energy efficiency while giving you total control over the amount of sunlight entering a room through the skylight. In kitchens, Energy Star-qualified fresh air skylights increase natural light and ventilation without requiring any loss of wall space you could better use for cabinetry. In bathrooms, they provide the perfect combination of privacy and healthful natural light and ventilation.

If you already have older glass or plastic bubble skylights, you can upgrade to the latest solar powered models, plus solar blinds, and receive a 30 percent federal tax credit on the products as well as installation costs. You can even bring more natural light into rooms or areas without direct roof access, like half-baths, closets and hallways, with Sun Tunnel tubular skylights. Visit www.whyskylights.com to learn more.

2. Add organization/storageClutter and chaos not only make a room function less efficiently, it can impact your mood as well. Adding organization and storage to rooms where clutter typically collects - such as bedrooms, living rooms and game rooms - is an easy, cost-effective way to improve the function of the room and how you feel about spending time in it.

In bedrooms, maximize closet space by installing organization units. A variety of manufacturers offer ready-made units you can install yourself. Or, for a bit more investment, you can have a professional closet organizer custom-make a unit to fit your space and needs. In living rooms and game rooms, built-in shelving and cabinetry is a functional and beautiful way to improve organization.

3. Improve ventilationAir flow is critical to the health of your home and everyone who lives in it. Ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms carries away excess moisture that can cause mold and mildew, and creates a fresher, more healthful environment by exhausting stale indoor air.

Bathrooms should be equipped with exhaust fans, and kitchen hoods should vent to the exterior of your home whenever possible. You can further improve ventilation by installing Energy Star-qualified, solar-powered fresh-air skylights, like those made by Velux. Because these skylights open, they provide passive ventilation to allow stale indoor air to escape and admit fresh air. A sensor operates a motor to close the skylights automatically in case of rain.

4. Replace older, inefficient fixtures and appliancesFixtures and appliances are key elements of kitchens and bathrooms. Older ones not only look dated and shabby, they can cost you money because they use more electricity and water than newer, more efficient models.

Replacing old faucets, shower heads, dishwashers and washing machines with newer models that use less water can reduce your water bill and give kitchens and bathrooms a whole new look. Energy Star-qualified appliances such as stoves, clothes dryers, refrigerators and washers also use less electricity than older appliances, so you can also lower your energy bills.

5. Freshen the foundationsEvery room benefits from a good foundation, and that doesn’t just mean sturdy flooring. Wall color, flooring materials and trim are fundamental elements in any room. Simply repainting walls and woodwork can completely change the way any room looks. Or, if you like the colors you have, a fresh coat in the same color will make the room look brighter and newer. Replacing worn carpeting or dated tiles, or refinishing a hardwood floor are also great ways to improve the foundations of any room.

Local landscape contractors are the best choice for homeowners who want to have attractive and cost effective landscape de-signs for their home. Homeowners know their property best, but local landscape contractors come in at a close second. When a homeowner has a vision for their property, landscape contractors and designers make that dream become a reality. Along the way, they also help in making good choices in plant species, stay on top of local and regional trends, and provide professional services for cost effective and safe designs. Unless a homeowner is also a professional landscaper themselves, landscape contractors will be the homeowner’s best friend when it comes to their property.

Why Local Is The Way To Go There are plenty of national TV shows and advice columns on how to landscape your property, but they fail to take into account actual local conditions. Your hometown’s climate plays a huge impact on what plant species will thrive, which will require extra time and money for special care, and which ones will simply not work. Native species are also the most cost effective and sustain-able choices when it comes to landscaping rather than importing flowers or shrubs from far away.

Your local landscape contractors have this knowledge already. With years of experience working in your city, they know exactly what will thrive and how to push your budget as far as it can go. They have the knowledge on what supplies and materials are available close by and will find the best deals.

In addition, native species are also the easiest to maintain since they fit well into existing climate conditions. They won’t need exces-sive watering nor will they get swamped during the rainy season. A beautiful yard that doesn’t require loads of time and money for upkeep is really the ideal solution for any homeowner.

Stay Ahead On What’s HotAnother big advantage for going with local landscaping contractors is staying up on what is hot in your area. The hot items typically represent good deals and popular ideas for landscaping that can be used for dramatic affect at a very reasonable price. This also supports hometown businesses and has a strong impact on your city’s economy which is a nice side benefit in tough economic times.

While sometimes using an exotic idea on your property can add a unique touch, it is best to stick with what your neighborhood landscape contractors are focusing on in their work. Matching the architecture of a home to the layout of the yard is also another important aspect in successful landscapes. Again, the company down the street has years of experience with the types of homes in your area.

One of the best ways to find great landscape contractors in your area is to keep an eye out for a neighbor with a great yard. Ask them who they used and chances are you have reference for a company that can work wonders with your vision as well.

Overall, the benefits to using professionals in your area are essential for having an attractive property that doesn’t break the bank and fits in well with your home and neighborhood. 150826111606

Accessorize with new hardwareReplace your front door hardware for a quick, easy facelift. Choose hardware finishes consistent with those of your home’s light fixtures, mailbox and house numbers to maintain a polished, cohesive look. You’ll be surprised what a difference new hardware on your front door can make in creating a positive look and feel.

Refresh exterior and trim colorsNow’s also time to add a new storm door to help keep out the elements, or to add a refreshing coat of paint on your existing exterior doors for a fresh look. For a dramatic change, repaint your home’s exterior. You can also change trim color to refresh your home’s exterior impact. When updating trim, choose color schemes that match your home’s primary exterior color, or complement it with a fresh twist.

Accent with lightingFor night-time curb appeal and safety, add a row of exterior accent lighting to illuminate a walking path with ground-insert solar lights. Or consider solar spotlights to bring out landscaping or architectural focal points. Install new matching light fixtures outside your front door, garage door or patio door to create an inviting feel and provide well-lit doorways to greet you and visiting neighbors and guests.

Create points of interest with plantsAdd pops of color by arranging potted plants around your front door, or on a porch or deck. Incorporate planters or container gardens of varied sizes, shapes and colors to add visual interest. Also, planting flowerbeds along driveways and walkways gives your home a softer, more inviting feel.

The Nordic movement, which evokes the simple, minimalist homes of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Finland, is enjoying new popularity as Americans seek to balance work life with home life, and create spaces where they can unplug, unwind and relax. Nearly 77 percent of homeowners reported neutral tones, such as those embraced by Nordic design, make a room feel more tranquil, according to a recent Sherwin-Williams National Home Design and Color survey.

Here are some tips to steer your space clear of clutter and embrace the minimalist beauty of Nordic décor for a balanced and bright 2016.

Start with a clean slate Selecting the right hue of white paint on your walls can create the foundation for Nordic design. Take a cue from colors inspired by natural, fine-textured stone. For example, Alabaster (SW 7008), Sherwin-Williams 2016 Color of the Year, is a natural, flattering white suited especially for a harmonious atmosphere in bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens.

Turn on the lightAs in Nordic countries, the winter season’s long, dark months create a craving for daylight and its positive impact on mood. During these months, take advantage of the daylight you do have by letting window light shine in through a sheer curtain for an ethereal effect in your space.

Minimalist Nordic design is taking over the home décor scene in 2016. Scandinavian-inspired design principles, featuring white, simple color schemes and use of natural materials, provide attractive options for creating a balanced, beautiful home.

4 Ways to Tap Into the Nordic Décor Trend

When the sun goes down, create the effects of daylight in your home décor. Incorporate shiny and reflective elements, like a large beautiful mirror hung on the wall, to reflect your interior lighting and give the illusion of a more spacious atmosphere.

Use shiny metallic elements such as copper, the metal of the moment, in a living room lamp or for pendant lighting in a white kitchen. Hang paper lanterns in a bedroom to add movement and lighten up the space in a fun and interesting way.

Embrace natural tones Nordic design is all about using natural, live-well tones to create environments where we can feel serene. To achieve this look and feel, use earthy, natural materials, such as Carrera marble, to bring an element of sophistication to a countertop in a kitchen or bath.

Choose birch or maple wood grains for cabinets and furniture to add balance to lovely light stone grays and blush petal pinks, and create a refreshing, yet uncomplicated atmosphere.

Get sharp with geometrics and details Complex shapes, angles and patterns in vibrant colors are also present in Nordic décor. Use a boxy picture frame or multilevel open shelving units to offer symmetry and provide a focal point in your space.

In a home that celebrates simplicity, there’s always room for a bit of whimsy or a pop of color. Even small details can make a big statement: a zebra-striped pillow on a couch or bed; several multicolored candleholders lined up in a row on a dining room sideboard; or red-painted counter stools in a winter-white kitchen.

After being cooped up during the winter season, families are eager for warmer weather so they can get outside and play. Research shows that play is an important part of children’s physical, emotional and intellectual development. With spring upon us, now is a great time to make play and outside activity part of your family’s regular routine. Here are some ideas:

Remember, every little bit helpsActive play is an important part of keeping families happy and healthy. In fact, childhood obesity increases 29 percent in neighborhoods without a park or playground, according to KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to ensuring that all children get the balance of active play they need. Instead of driving to your local playground or park, walk or bike, to get in an extra dose of activity. Every little bit helps in keeping your kids growing up strong - physically, emotionally and intellectually.

Spring has sprung!TipsForGettingOutsideToPlay

Keep imagination at the forefrontKids can do anything they put their minds to, and they can keep themselves busy for hours with just their imaginations. Bring that power to your next outdoor adventure by creating a make-believe obstacle course based on their favorite book or movie at your local play area. Get other kids involved and become the MVP of playtime.

Pledge to be activeStaying active on a consistent basis is key to achieving a balanced lifestyle. Let’s Play, a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple Group to get kids and families active, provides a host of tools, places and inspiration to make play a daily priority. Visit www.LetsPlay.com for a wealth of ideas to incorporate play into your day, and take the Let’s Play Pledge to devote additional playtime each week to your family’s routine.

It’s all about balancePlaytime takes a lot of energy, so make sure your kids are armed with healthy and nutritious nibbles to replenish their growing minds and bodies. Fruits, veggies, applesauce, whole grains and snack-size cheese are great after-play snacks. Make sure kids are also staying hydrated to keep their energy levels up throughout the day.

It’s not necessary to use harsh chemicals and toxins to achieve a cleaner, fresh-smelling home this spring. Homemade cleaning products and earth-friendly tactics can help you clean green. Here are green cleaning ideas and a supplies list that will make Mother Nature happy:

Begin by decluttering, which requires no chemicals at all. As you’re disposing of items you no longer need or want, be mindful of ways to keep them out of the waste stream. Donating gently used but no-longer-needed items such as clothing, furniture and books is a great way to reduce waste and cut clutter at the same time.

Clean windows instantly brighten your house inside and out, and they’re one of the easiest household cleaning chores to do with natural tools. A simple solution of white vinegar and water (about two tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water) makes an effective, low-cost and green window cleaner. Spritz on windows using a spray bottle and use newspaper instead of paper towels for a streak-free clean. Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Straight lemon juice works just as well and smells distinctly like spring.

Pull out the white vinegar again to mix up a great floor cleaner that works well on surfaces from hardwood to vinyl to tile. You’ll need to add three or four cups of vinegar to about a gallon of hot water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil - peppermint or lemon are popular choices - so that when the vinegar aroma evaporates, the wonderful scent of the oil will linger.

Prepare a multi-purpose cleaner to help brighten and freshen surfaces throughout your home. Mix two tablespoons of unscented liquid soap with four drops of lemon essential oil and two drops of tea tree essential oil. Pour the mixture into a gallon of warm water. Use this multi-purpose solution with a sponge mop or rag to remove dirt from floors and hard surfaces such as countertops and appliances.

Stock up on natural cleaning supplies such as lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils, baking and washing soda, Borax, white distilled vinegar, spray and squeeze bottles, natural bristle scrubbing brushes, old newspaper, cotton dusting cloths and hemp or jute fiber scrubbing cloths.

GREEN CLEANING Instead of chemical air fresheners that can irritate allergy sufferers, make your own room fresheners using cotton balls soaked in essential oil. Store in decorative ceramic dishes out of reach of children and pets. For bedrooms, lavender is relaxing. Lemon and other citrus oils are invigorating for bathrooms, and cinnamon and clove impart mouth-watering aroma to kitchens.

Laundering linens is a cornerstone of spring cleaning. Mass marketed liquids and dryer sheets, however, rely on softening chemicals and petroleum-derived fragrances to impart softness and scent. Try this simple, natural fabric softening recipe from the essential oil experts at Aura Cacia:

Ingredients:1/2 cup vinegar, 2 tbsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp lavender essential oil

Directions: Dissolve baking soda in vinegar, stir in lavender and pour into the water during your washer’s rinse cycle. Line dry clothes for maximum green value. Or, if you must use a dryer, add a wool dryer ball to shorten drying time and soften clothes. To boost the fresh scent of lavender, sprinkle several drops on the dryer ball or on a paper towel and add to the dryer during the cool down cycle.

In theory, vacations should equal happiness. After all, taking time off work and time away allows us the opportunity to share experiences and memories with our families and friends. It gives us the chance to look at the world differently: To introduce us to new scenery, different places, people and customs. But according to new research, theory doesn’t always translate to reality when measuring happiness and travel.

We know traveling the world can cross train your brain to help you see more possibilities in life. And based on this new research, we have also found that travel can make people happier, healthier and more productive when they return from a vacation. But not all travel creates happiness, says Shawn Achor, positive psychology researcher and international best-selling author of The Happiness Advantage. Travel stress can undo the positive effects of travel. Given this fact, there is a very specific formula needed to make the most of a vacation, allowing us to increase our happiness and overall energy.

According to the new Monograms Road to Happiness Study, four primary ingredients are needed to enjoy a happy travel experience. In fact, 97 percent of travelers report being very or exceptionally happy when their vacation had these components:

1. Minimize stressWhen asked about their best trips, only 4 percent of people reported feeling stressed. Conversely, on their worst trips, stress played a big role for nearly 75 percent. Specifically, the biggest vacation stressors were:

• Wasting time figuring things out• Being unfamiliar with the destination• Managing transportation

2. Plan aheadIf you want a happy vacation, check spontaneity at the door. Our new research revealed that the best, and happiest‚ vacations for 90 percent of people were those planned more than one month in advance, says Achor. Planning ahead reduces stress and increases the opportunity to anticipate the getaway. And anticipation offers a great happiness advantage.

3. Make a local connectionOn their best trips, 78 percent of travelers knew a knowledgeable friend in the destination or met with a local guide. When you meet-up with a local guide or someone you know, you are better able to connect with the destination, says Achor. And creating a connection with people and places, cultures and histories, allows us to open our minds and increase our chances of experiencing happiness.

4. Go far and awayThe Road to Happiness Study also revealed that 85 percent of travelers‚ best trips over the past five years were in locations outside their home country. Staycations just don’t bring the same happiness and meaning that travel does, says Achor. Ninety-four percent of travelers vacationing far from home found more meaning, and more happiness, during their time off than those who stayed home.

Traveling the world can be an amazing, and even better a happy experience, says Achor. It should be. You just have to travel the right way.

You’ve probably heard the chatter around how a handful of unusual foods are must-eat nutritional powerhouses - and wondered how you’ll ever get your kids to try kale or chia seeds. But you don’t have to stress over how to incorporate the latest health food fads into your family’s diet in order to get powerful nutrition.

The truth is, those headline-grabbers aren’t the only nutritional powerhouses. Most vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals, so quit worrying about how to pronounce acai or where to find seaweed in the supermarket. Instead, improve your family’s diet and save some money by growing nutrition-packed vegetables right in your own backyard. Keep these tips in mind:

Growing squash is easier than finding chia seedsMany vegetables are easy to grow in any home environment, whether it’s a large garden plot or pots on your patio. Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, arugula and kale are full of nutrients and simple to grow, even for beginners. Transplants, like those offered by Bonnie Plants, make it even easier by helping you bypass the work of starting from seed. Plus, you’ll harvest six weeks sooner.

Healthy benefits go far beyond nutritionGrowing your own vegetables and herbs means you’ll always have a fresh supply of nutrient-rich food at home. But gardening also delivers healthful exercise, time in the fresh air, and it’s a relaxing and satisfying activity.

Gardens are good for Mother NatureThe more food you grow at home, the fewer natural resources will be needed to grow veggies in far off places and ship them to your local supermarket. Your garden is also a great opportunity to recycle household food waste as compost. Plus, when you choose Bonnie Plants in biodegradable pots, you’re saving millions of pounds of plastic from landfills. The pots decompose, add nutrients to the soil and help prevent transplant shock.

Gardening could get your kids excited about veggies - really! When kids participate in gardening, they take ownership of the plants they help grow. And with their hands in the dirt, they’re not on their cellphones or playing video games. Kids who grow veggies are much more likely to eat them, and make gardening an ongoing, healthy habit.

Save money at the supermarketGrowing your own food means you’ll spend much less money in the produce aisle. Plus, you can grow a wide variety of vegetables and herbs, even expensive, restaurant-style “foodie” greens you may not have tried otherwise.

The plant pros at Bonnie recommend these nutrient powerhouses to jumpstart your garden:

Strawberries: Just one cup of berries contains 3 grams of fiber and more than a full day’s recommended allowance of vitamin C. Phenols are potent antioxidants that work to protect the heart, fight cancer, block inflammation, and they give strawberries their red color.

Sweet Potatoes: Alpha and beta carotene give sweet potatoes their bright orange color, and your body converts these compounds into vitamin A, which is good for your eyes, bones and immune system. A half cup of sweet potato provides nearly four times the daily recommended allowance of vitamin A, plus vitamins C, B6, potassium and manganese.

Broccoli: This green nutritional giant delivers vitamins C, A and K (associated with bone health), folate and sulforaphane that helps stimulate the body’s detoxifying enzymes.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes provide vitamins A, C and B, potassium and lycopene - an important phytonutrient thought to help fight various cancers and lower cholesterol.

Spinach: Spinach contains more than a dozen phytonutrients, and twice the daily recommended allowance of vitamin K. These nutrients contribute to cardiovascular and colon health, better brain function, eyesight and increased energy.

Kale: Kale contains vitamins A, C and K. A cup of cooked kale gives you more than 1,000 percent of the daily value for vitamin K. It’s also high in manganese, which promotes bone density.

Cauliflower: Low in calories and carbohydrates, cauliflower is packed with a long list of nutrients, including phytonutrients. They say cauliflower is the new kale!
