Braham 2010 records: Girls– 6th place Great River Conference, 3rd place Section 7A. Boys– 8th place Great River Conference.

Top returners: Girls– JRS Brianna Richmond, Megan Schutte, Lauren Vandenport, FR Caitlyn Richmond. Boys– SR Derek Holt, JR Josh Eliasson, SO Dylan Altendorf, 8th Quinn Richmond.

Team depth: Girls– 7th Ali Anderson. Boys– 8th Brandon Brown, Mitch Kahlow, Terry Gruba, Francis Loerzel.

Caitlin Richmond had a strong finish for Bomber girls golf squad last season when she took 14th place in the Great River standings and ended up in 8th place at the Section 7A finals. Brianna Richmond, Megan Schutte and Lauren Vandenport fol-lowed her in the conference

standings and all gained valu-able experience at sections.

Dylan Altendorf is back as a young leader for the Bomber boys after he ad-vanced to sections along with grad Erik Linn-Molin in 2010. Quinn Richmond, Josh Elias-son and Derek Holt golfed in several GRC matches for the Bombers. The boys have a big batch of young swingers learning the game this spring.

“We have the four varsity players returning to the girls squad. They are excited for the season to start, again if we can play with consis-tency they will be fine,” said new Bomber head coach Ed Melcher. “The boys are young but have some experience, so hopefully we can play with some consistency.”

Great River Conference Outlook: The Rush City girls rose to the top of the Great River last year with three golf-ers in the top five of the final individual standings. The ma-jority of the Tigers return for this season. Pine City was a close 2nd to RC in the ‘10 standings.

East Central held off Isle and Pine City to win a tight race in the boys standings but will need some retooling

this season after graduating three seniors. Isle graduated two-time GRC medalist Justin Rappl but returns FR Grant Exstad, the 2010 runner-up.

Section 7A Outlook: The Mesabi East teams swept the section titles last season. The Giant boys return five starters from the team which placed 6th at Class A State. The Mes-abi girls also have five start-ers back after placing 8th at State. Both Babbitt-Embarass squads were close runners-up in 7A last year.

Braham 2010 records: 10-8 overall, 6-6 Great River Conference (3rd place), Lost in second round 5A playoffs.

Top returners: SRS Mike Strelow (P/C), Kyle Grell (P/IF), Christian Tow-ery (OF/C), Aidan Fealy (OF/C), Ryan Fitzsimmons (OF), JRS Cory Ambrose (IF/OF), Kevin Strelow (OF/IF), Nic Lance (IF).

Team depth: SRS Adam Hendren (OF), Codi Kruse (OF), JRS Nick Hammond (P/IF), Jerry Griggs (IF), Alex Anderson (IF), SOPHS Casey Grell (OF), Sam Stigen (IF/C).

The Bombers have a solid core of re-turners to the starting lineup to go after

the leaders in the Great River. Mike Stre-low brings back the most experienced arm to the mound, throwing a complete-game shutout in the Bombers’ 2009 playoff win over Hinckley. Kyle Grell and Cory Ambrose return to their infield spots, while Christian Towery, A.J. Fealy and Ryan Fitzsimmons chased for many innings in the outfield.

“We are a team that could be very competitive in the GRC. We have a pretty good pitching staff. We are fairly experi-enced. We hope to be in the top third of the GRC. We would like to push farther into the playoffs this year, which I think is a possibility,” said Bomber head coach Aitor Leniz.

Great River Conference Outlook: Ogilvie, the defending champs who went 11-1 in GRC games, return a solid core. East Central has many talented seniors back from a team which made a good playoff run. Pine City will be solid, and Coach Leniz sees his Braham squad challenging if everything gels together.

Section 5A Outlook: Defending 5A champ Eden Valley-Watkins finished off a perfect 27-0 season as the Class A champs and return three stars from that team. Ogilvie was the East Subsection champs, holding off East Central in the subsection title game. Legacy Christian (formerly Meadow Creek) and Royalton also could be tough this spring.

Braham 2010 records: 14-10 overall, 7-4 Great River Conference (3rd place), Lost in fourth round 5A playoffs.

Top returners: SRS Katie Nickles (IF), Liz Anderson (IF), Emily Long (IF), JRS Kelsey Sorenson-Giffrow (OF), Amanda Sybrant (OF/IF).

Team depth: SRS Kelsey Schoenrock (OF), JR Rachel DeGray (IF/OF), SOPHS Sara Tomlinson (P), Jen O’Neil (P), Bella Williams (C), Dan Braund (C/IF), FR Kayla Nickles (OF).

It’s a transition season as a group of young players will push for innings. Katie Nickles, Liz Anderson and Kelsey Soren-son-Giffrow are all multi-season starters

who can produce runs at the plate, with Emily Long and Amanda Sybrant adding solid experience. Sara Tomlinson and Jen O’Neil will share pitching duties after grad Sam Anderson tossed the majority of in-nings last season. Kayla Nickles brings her speed back to the outfield after missing last season with a knee injury, but junior starter Becca Cuda was lost to a knee in-jury during the basketball season.

“We have three very experienced start-ers returning and will lean on them for leadership and stability. We are short on varsity experience but have a great group of girls who are ready to step in and play softball. The girls already get along great and with the leaders we have, I see the team being drama-free,” said Bomber head

coach Becky Swanson.

Great River Conference Outlook: Isle is the defending champ in the GRC, ending Aitkin’s two-year run at the top of the conference. The Huskies, Hinckley-Finlayson and Pine City will all be really tough as they return a lot of top players in the Great River, forecast Coach Swanson.

Section 5A Outlook: Barnum rode its great set of athletes to the 5A champi-onship over runner-up Osakis, then the northern Bombers (25-3) closed as run-ners-up in Class A to three-time champ New Life Academy. Barnum, Isle and Hinckley-Finlayson are preseason favor-ites in the section.

Braham 2010 records: 5th place Great River Conference, 16th place Section 5A Finals.

Top returners: SRS Hannah Dahlman, Joanna Hale, Kate Bendickson, JR Austyn Eng, SOPHS Becca Dahlman, Jessica West-man, Sammy Patterson, Abby Salmonson, FR Ra-chel Eskuri.

Team depth: SRS Maria Olivares, Maddie Simon, SOPHS Sammy Kreyer, Bethany Johnson, FR Jen-na Winter, 8th Courtney Vanderport, 7th Jaclyn Hollencamp.

Hannah Dahlman, Aus-tyn Eng and Becca Dahl-man return 3/4s of the 4x200 Relay which placed 6th at Class A State last season. Bethany Johnson and Jaclyn Hollencamp have filled in on that re-lay for graduated Sarah Schutte in the early sea-son. Joanna Hale returns as the defending GRC pole vault champ and already set an indoor record in that event this spring.

H. Dahlman is a top 400 sprinter, and both Eng and B. Dahlman return experience in the vault. Kate Bendickson, Rachel Eskuri, Jessica Westman and Sammy Patterson add distance running experi-ence, with Bendickson and Eskuri working at the discus, as well.

“We have the ability to repeat as All-Conference on our three relays. We’re hoping to get that 4x200 back to State for the third straight year,” said Bomber head coach Joe Rajkowski.

Great River Confer-ence Outlook: Pine City

is the defending GRC girls champs, but Mille Lacs placed ahead of the Drag-ons both at the Braham Indoor and the GRC Unlim-ited meets this preseason. Rush City was a close 3rd at the GRC Unlimited where the Bomber girls placed 4th.

Section 5A Outlook: Zimmerman took the girls championship last season in the large Section 5A, holding off Annandale and St. Cloud Cathedral by a few points. The Thunder went on to place 14th at Class A State.

Relays, pole vault set pace for Bomber girls

Braham 2010 records: 7th place Great River Conference.

Top returners: SRS Brad Co-chran, Alex Jones, JR Jacob Ra-jkowski, SOPHS Luke Whitehead.

Team depth: SOPHS Bryce Lan-

hart, Logan White, FR Connor TenNapel, Zach Dahlman.

Jacob Rajkowski returns as the tops points-earner in 2010, specializing in sprints and the long jump. Brad Cochran and Alex Jones bring senior leader-ship to the throwing events, and

Cochran also is a distance run-ner. Luke Whitehead adds sprint-ing skills and anchors the 4x100 relay. Bryce Lanhart and Logan White add more relay experi-ence. Zach Dahlman is off to a good start in the 400 and added points in the pole vault in the

Bombers’ 2011 meets. Connor TenNapel improved his distance running in cross country last fall.

“We have a very young boys team, and our numbers will limit event entries. But we will be aim-ing to get several members earn-ing All-Conference or Honorable Mention,” said Bomber head coach Joe Rajkowski.

Great River Conference Out-look: Rush City holds the GRC crown after a dominating 2010 finals meet. However, the Tigers slipped past Pine City by just 4 points at last week‘s GRC Unlim-ited. East Central and Hinckley-Finlayson also have good ath-letes back this spring.

Section 5A Outlook: Foley and Annandale tied for the sec-tion championship last season. The Falcons placed 14th at State on the strength of their relays.

Sprints are Braham boys’ strength

Cambridge Christian 2010 record: 4-10 overall (no Christian Athletic League playoffs for baseball).

Top returners: JR Dillon Lahn (OF), SOPHS Alex Moses (P/IF), Anthony Lecceardone (P/IF), Alex Lecceardone (C), Grant Taylor (IF/C), Jack Sw-enson (IF/C), Bill Enos (OF), Andrew Heidelberger (OF/IF), FR Jake Bergman, (P/IF), Charlie Swenson (OF).

Team depth: SOPH James McLean (P/OF/IF), Eric Kalpin (C/IF/OF), Peter Maring (OF), Isaiah Hurd (OF), Ethan Gil-man (OF).

The Warriors battled through last season with an extremely young squad. That season along with a summer of youth baseball should see the CCS boys keep making steps this spring. Pitching arms were added to help take some pressure off primary

2010 hurlers Alex Moses and Anthony Lecceardone. Alex Lecceardone caught the ma-jority of innings, but athletes such as Grant Taylor (1B) and Jack Swenson (2B) can spell him behind the plate. Jake Bergman returns at SS and is another solid multi-sport ath-lete on this roster.

“We’re still quite young, but we are making significant improvement,” said Warrior head coach Jerry Moses.

“Two areas I would like to see us really make strides in are scoring more runs and im-proving our outfield defense.”

The Warriors have a healthy nine home games amid their regular-season schedule. Added this spring is a tourney at Christian Life of Farmington near the end of the season.

Young Warriors return full squad from ‘10

Cambridge Christian 2010 record: 7-7 overall (no Christian Athletic League playoffs for softball).

Top returners: SRS Sheila Stephani (IF), Kassie Sax-owsky (C), JRS Annie KinCan-non (P), Mikayla Lecceardone (IF/C), SOPH Caitlin Walburg (IF).

Team depth: FR Kellie Ped-ersen (IF/OF/P), Clarissa Fi-letti (OF), 8TH Kim Walburg (P/OF), 7TH Kristin Bergman (IF/P), Amelia Cole (OF).

Sheila Stephani (tall target at 1B) and Kassie Saxowsky are four-year starters in the Warrior infield, both whom bring veteran bats to the line-up. Annie Kincannon takes

over the pitching duties from grad Emily Aleckson. Mikayla Lecceardone and Caitlin Wal-burg add veteran at-bats and steady gloves. The Warriors have young pitchers develop-ing in the wings this season.

“We will be a strong hitting and baserunning team. Annie will be our starting pitcher, and she will grow in consis-

tency as the season goes on. The young pitchers should see the mound mid-season,” said Warrior head coach Kim Aleckson, who returns to coach the team after taking last year off. “This is a fun group of girls to work with, and vast improvements will be made as the season goes on with the young players.”

Cambridge-Isanti 2010 records: 2nd place Missis-sippi 8 Conference, 5th place Section 7AAA.

Top returners: SRS Ryan Lundeen, Jordan Knutson, FR Matt Swanson.

Team depth: JRS Jared Knutson, Jonah Poppen, Reg-gie Martin, Austin Galligan.

Both Ryan Lundeen and Jordan Knutson earned M-8 Honorable Mention in the 2011 season which saw the Bluejackets finish strongly to

slip past Buffalo into the con-ference runner-up spot. Matt Swanson is another starter back from a team which grad-uated half its varsity. One of those three need to grasp the leadership role vacated by graduated star Ty Liljander. Jared Knutson, Jonah Pop-pen, Reggie Martin and Aus-tin Galligan will battle after good JV seasons a year ago.

“Ryan Lundeen and Jordan Knutson have been on the varsity team since their soph-omore year, and Ryan played his best golf at the end of the

year– making it to the second day of sections. Matt Swan-son has a full year of varsity golf. and we are looking for him to step up his game. As always, we hope to be playing our best golf at the end of the season,” said Bluejacket head coach Mike Hennen.

Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: “Rogers is the top squad again this year. They lost one to graduation and one to golf school in North Carolina, but they have a lot of depth,” projected Coach

Hennen of the Royals who fin-ished as Class AA runners-up in 2010. “It will be a battle for 2nd place.”

Section 7AAA Outlook: Elk River returns as the de-fending champion, paced by 2010 medalist SR Chase Hohn (6th at State). The Elks fin-ished 3rd in Class AAA. For-est Lake is always tough, as well, led by 7AAA runner-up SO Max Kelly (8th at State).

Cambridge-Isanti 2010 records: 6th place Mis-sissippi 8 Conference, 11th place Section 7AAA.

Top returners: JRS Leah Schoenecker, Emily Sunder-man, Megan Hallstrom, Alyssa Rapp, SOPH Megan Koester.

Team depth: JRS Brittany Minar, Rebecca Mins, Roselyn Mork, SOPHS Jenna Hooper, Dagne Gorham, FR Anna Sun-derman.

Leah Schoenecker and Emily Sunderman are back

to lead the Bluejacket girls in 2011. Alyssa Rapp, Megan Hallstrom and Megan Koester all bring back varsity experi-ence from 2010. Freshman Anna Sunderman is showing potential to vie for a varsity spot.

“We are looking to im-prove our standing in the

conference this year and play the best competitive golf pos-sible,” said Bluejacket head coach Kris Vaske.

Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Defending champ Buffalo graduated State en-trant Megan Davis. Looking like the team to beat is Beck-

er who have five players back from the squad which placed 6th at Class AA State last spring, including JR Kortney Williams (13th at State).

Section 7AAA Outlook: Grand Rapids swung its way to its section straight 7AAA title last year and kept rolling

to a 4th-place finish at Class AAA State. The Thunder-hawks are led by SO Dan Del-greco (18th at State) and SR Mikki Kromy (23rd at State). Coach Vaske also foresees Forest Lake and Elk River to be top contenders to GR.

The army of Bluejacket boys track has several leaders returning across the spectrum of events this spring. The C-I boys placed a solid 2nd at its True Team Invite hosted last Friday which included section partners Anoka, St. Francis and

Grand Rapids. The sprints were led by high place-earners Aaron Kordiak, Kish Daniels, Jason Codner, Eric Mielke and Nick Solberg, with the team’s 4x400 re-lay taking 1st. Returning veterans Casey Golla, Matt Andres, Conner Anderson Kyle Johnson and Forrest Kalk turned in points in the hurdling events. Sam West-erberg, Joe Illg and SO Patrick Jones led in the 800. The distance events saw good placings from Billy Eifert, Trevor Galli-gan, Brandon Simon, JR James Edstrom and FR Reegan Lane.

Mark Volker and Anderson team with Jones for a solid group of Jackets in the pole vault. In the long and triple jumps, the likes of Codner, Daniels, Mielke, JR Jonathan Head and SO Devin Mathews should be consistent producers this spring. The high jumpers were led by Johnson and SO Justin Rud at the True Team. Jeremy Ham in the discus leads a new group of throwers which include Adam Muehlhauser, Daniels, SO Clinton

Treichel and FR Darren DeBaere.

Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Buffalo dominated the conference finals in 2010 to continue that program’s strong track & field run. The Bison and runner-up St. Michael-Albertville both placed in the top 20 at Class AA State.

Section 7AA Outlook: Forest Lake won last spring’s title by a comfortable margin over runner-up North Branch, finishing 14th at State. The Bluejackets will definitely be aiming to climb from its 9th-place finish. Top returning sec-tion-placers for the Bluejackets are the following: F. Kalk– 5th in high jump, Eif-ert– 6th in 3200, Kordiak– 6th in the 400, Westerberg– 7th in the 1600, Golla– 7th in the 300 hurdles, Galligan– 8th in the 800, Mielke– 9th in the long jump, Ander-son and Volker– 9th in the pole vault.

Cambridge-Isanti Girls Track & Field 2011

Cambridge-Isanti 2010 re-cords: 2nd place Mississippi 8 Conference Finals, 5th place Section 7AA Finals.

Top returners: SRS Hannah Mueller, Grace Nelson, Ro-celle Anderson, Pam Englund, JRS Erica Young, Michelle Zie-barth, SOPHS Kylie Baas, Ka-trina Page

Team depth: SRS Angelica Brady, Holly Buboltz, Miranda Christensen, Alyssa Coop, Da-rah Douglass, Pam Englund, Molly Fridstrom, Samantha Gese, Brittney Gregg, Gabrielle Gregoire, Nadia Nassif, Becca Reineccius, Jessicah Rooney, Norma Sanchez, Emily Vogel-pohl, Michelle Wade.

To stay among the Missis-sippi 8 leaders, the Bluejackets will have to replace a load of

talent lost to graduation– most notably State entrant Rachel Kalk (hurdles, jumps). Leading the way back is Hannah Muel-ler who gained State experi-ence last spring in both the 100 hurdles and long jump. Muel-ler already broke the meet re-cord in the 100 hurdles at the U of M Indoor this spring and put up huge points at last Fri-day’s True Team Invite at CIHS. Adding depth in the long and triple jumps are newcomer Nadia Nassif and SO Schulyer Loneman. Also scoring in the hurdles at the True Team were Nassif, Brittney Gregg, Emily Vogelpohl and Jessicah Rooney.

Leading sprinters back for C-I are Michelle Ziebarth, Ro-celle Anderson and SO Abby Schlenker, with FR Carlynn Galeazzi and 8TH Lily Porta

scoring well in the 400 at the True Team. SO Emily Moore, FR Justine Larson and Miranda Christenson paced the team in the 800. JRS Andrea White, Amanda Olander, SOPHS Han-nah Prigge, Taylor Oullette, Amy Head and 8TH Maddie Oullette make up a retooled distance crew.

Anderson, JR Adelle Nelson and Vogelpohl all placed in the pole vault at the True Team. Kylie Baas and Grace Nelson finished 1st-2nd in the high jump for a big highlight, with SO Katrina Page also scoring. Pam Englund led the C-I throw-ers in the discus at the True Team, joined in that event and the shot put by JRS Megan Schultz, Alex Nelson, SOPHS Samantha Yaggy, Ashley Hiljus and FR Ruby Evans.

Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Monticello put to-gether a strong M-8 Finals to end the Bluejackets’ two-year run at the top of the confer-ence. Also watch for Buffalo and Zimmerman to return good athletes to the track this spring.

Section 7AA Outlook: Elk River came out on top in a fairly-balanced 7AA Finals last June, taking its second-straight title by just 16 points over run-ner-up Grand Rapids. Top re-turning section place-winners for the Bluejackets are: Mue-hlhauser– 1st long jump, 2nd 100 hurdles & 3rd triple jump; G. Nelson– 3rd high jump; Zie-barth– 12th 100; Anderson– 12th pole vault.

Cambridge-Isanti 2010 records: 8-8 Mississippi 8 Conference (6th place), 10-11 overall, lost in first round Sec-tion 7AAA playoffs.

Top returners: SRS Garrett Hedberg (IF), Reed Burns (P/IF), Mike Henderscheid (P/IF), David Larson (OF), JRS Cole Bakke (P/IF), Ryan Miller (P/IF).

Team depth: SRS Brent Scho-enwald (P/OF), Nick Johnson (C), Austin Hunt (C/IF), JRS Clayton Jennissen (OF/P), Tom Selz (OF), Ryan Epsen (C).

The deep Bluejacket pitch-

ing staff has many arms ca-pable of throwing this season: Cole Bakke, Ryan Miller, Brent Schoenwald, Mike Henders-cheid, Reed Burns, Clayton Jennissen, Nick Jellison, Aus-tin Karpen and Luke McCrack-en. Garrett Hedberg returns to 2B, and he and Reed Burns (1B) logged the most varsity innings of the returners. Scho-enwald is a solid team leader on the mound. Henderscheid brings a big bat back at 3B. Bakke, Miller (SS), Austin Hunt, David Larson, Clayton Jennissen and Nick Johnson were big run producers during the summer Cambridge Legion

season. The Jacket outfield is fast, and the team showed op-portune hitting in its opening win over Grand Rapids.

“We’ve got guys who can pitch. A big part of our philos-ophy is you have to play good defense. Playing defense is big, and we have really athlet-ic kids who are going to make plays behind our pitchers” said Bluejacket head coach Todd Smrekar.

Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: Just two games separated the top five teams in the M-8 last season, with St. Michael-Albertville and Big

Lake tying for the champion-ship at 11-5. The SMA Knights have been the most consistent program in the conference the past five seasons, and any title seeker must get through them.

Section 7AAA Outlook: Forest Lake is the two-time defending champ in the sec-tion– placing 4th in Class AAA State in ‘10, and the Rangers benefit from a strong Legion team which also reached State last summer. Duluth East and Andover have advanced well in the section tourney the past two seasons.

Cambridge-Isanti 2010 records: 7-9 Mississippi 8 Conference (6th place), 11-12 overall, lost in fourth round Section 7AAA playoffs.

Top returners: SRS Bailey Bakken (P), Allie Hanson (IF), Grace Smethers (OF), JRS Tay-lor Bowker (IF), Katie McCann (OF), SOPH Eric Epsen (OF).

Team depth: SR Elizabeth Haf-ner (OF), JRS Kate Hammero (P), Nicole Bielick (OF), SOPHS Amanda Hanson (IF), Kendall Sandberg (IF), Jeah Ponting

(OF), Jessica Golden (P), Han-nah Thiry (OF).

The Bluejackets got within one game of the Section 7AAA championship last season be-hind the strength of hurler Bai-ley Bakken who is back for her third varsity season. Bakken had 7 strikeouts and 0 walks in the season-opening win over North Branch. Allie Hanson re-turns at 1B and Taylor Bowker is back at SS– both provided big hits last season. Grace Smethers, Katie McCann and Erica Epsen all bring back solid gloves and speed in the outfield.

Amanda Hanson and Kendall Sandberg provide athleticism in the infield.

“We have high expectations that we will compete with ev-ery team. We should be strong defensively and have pitch-ing experience and depth. Our lineup one through nine has to approach every at-bat with con-fidence and attitude. I know we will play some exciting softball this spring,” said Bluejacket head coach David Hanson, fill-ing in for Heather Peterson who is off on maternity leave.

Mississippi 8 Conference Outlook: The conference race should be another good battle this season. Buffalo should be a favorite along with defending champ Becker and Rogers.

Section 7AAA Outlook: For-est Lake has been dominant the last few years and should be the team to beat again, projected Coach Hanson. The Rangers finished last season 23-4 and were the consolation champs at Class AAA State.
