Cat rescue calls for community to fi nd role to end suffering Hawaiian Humane Society is a charitable nonprofi t committed to animal welfare and supports the Honolulu Police Department to uphold certain animal-related laws. Th at poses a unique negotiation between enforcement and education. Th e Society’s most recent cruelty case in which humane investigators rescued 13 cats from a Waimanalo residence illustrates that challenge.

“Where do you draw the line between helping versus enabling or when to educate and when to enforce?” says Pamela Burns, Society president and CEO. “Our

organization faces that question every day and each situation has a unique set of circumstances.”

Aft er working for several months with an owner of more than 60 cats, care was not improving and in some cases was getting worse. “Th ese owners seem to love their animals,” Burns said. “We gave them ample opportunity to improve the standards of care, but it got to the point where these cats were in tremendous suff ering and needed immediate medical attention.”

President’s Message

Pamela Burns has served as the Hawaiian Humane Society

President and CEO since 1990.

Courts treat animal cruelty more seriously

New site could better serve West Oahu

Last June, nine dogs were found barely alive on a Waianae property. The dogs were rescued by Hawaiian Humane Society investigators, rehabilitated and adopted to loving families. The owner pled no contest to six counts of cruelty and Judge Dean Ochiai prohibited her from owning pets for a year and sentenced her to community service and restitution.

Hawaiian Humane Society’s Facebook page exploded in protest of the news with the public arguing for harsher penalties. The fact is that as the community moves towards a more enlightened relationship between animals and people, the justice system will follow.

In 2005, when a large-scale Kahaluu breeder faced more than 60 counts

of cruelty for animals suffering in his operation, the courts granted only a partial conviction and gave the animals back to the offender so that he could pay his cruelty fines. We have come a long way as a community and have an even longer road ahead.

Back in 1937, when our current Moiliili shelter was built, no one could have imagined how the need for our services would grow or the breadth of programs we would be providing today.

Last year the Society sheltered nearly 30,000 animals, reunited 3,225 lost pets with their owners, adopted out nearly 7,000 pets and performed 7,427 sterilizations. More than 15,000 calls for service were

answered through our work in animal protection, including

more than 3,000 requests for rescues and cruelty investigations.

Yet there is still an unmet need

for our services in the growing West Oahu area where the people and pet population are growing the

fastest.

In 2011, we commissioned a study to determine the extent of the need for a

second site. The report revealed that if we had a second site facility today in West Oahu, nearly half of the people and animals we currently serve from our Moiliili campus would be better served. As West Oahu is forecasted to continue to

grow, this number will likely continue to expand.

We hope someday in the near future that this will be a reality. Our ability to open a

second site depends on people across the island who

share our commitment to animals to step up with generous, investment-level gifts.

In 2011, Max’s Fund enabled us to help 133 dogs to provide high-cost treatments that are outside our clinic service’s capabilities. Established by Larry and Patricia Rodriguez in honor their beloved dog Max, you can support this special fund that is just for dogs. Call 356-2221.

Life-saving care included services such as x-rays, orthopedic care for fractures and even treatments for heartworms. Heartworms are deadly to dogs and totally preventable if owners administer monthly preventative.

Th e cats are all in treatment for various health conditions and will remain in the Humane Society’s care.

Th irteen counts of cruelty were issued.

Last year, the Society responded to 15,803 calls for service. Of those, 1,543 were reports of cruelty.

Th e Humane Society is encouraging rescue groups, veterinarians and individuals to contact its outreach coordinator Natalie Lukashevsky at 356-2217 if they are willing to provide intervention and prevention services including health care and support for pet owners that recognize that they have more animals than they can properly care for.

Speak out for those with no voice at the legislatureEnsuring passage of better animal protection laws requires animal lovers to voice their support.

Hawaiian Humane Society is also supporting a bill to ensure care standards and oversight that will provide sanitary living conditions, proper and timely medical care, the ability for dogs to move freely at least once a day, and adequate shelter.

Dogs are living beings reliant completely on people to meet their many needs. Th ey are not a product or commodity and should not be indiscriminately or irresponsibly mass produced. Th e demand for purebred puppies in Hawaii is staggering and is what drives production. We found 360 puppies for sale online and in Oahu pet shops during a two-week period. Based on this, we project that profi teers will yield an annual revenue of more than

$9.4 million in puppy sales. Th is is a major industry in Hawaii and is completely unregulated.

We believe we all need to help pass stronger protection laws to help animals used in breeding operations. However, we also believe that laws, regulation and enforcement are just part of a solution. Th e majority of the solution must be driven by a well-educated public that acquires puppies responsibly and considers that nearly 10,000 dogs and puppies arrived to our open admissions shelter in 2011.

Dogs bred in puppy mills are proven unable to cope fully with normal existence and demonstrate impaired health, according to a recent University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine study. Abnormal psychological and behavioral characteristics included elevated levels of fears and phobias, pronounced compulsive behaviors such as spinning in tight circles and pacing, house soiling and a heightened sensitivity to being touched and picked up. This was based on 2011 research of 1,200 breeding dogs observed two years after rescue – long after they had been removed from puppy mills.

Hawaiian Electric Company brightens up dog park

Local grocers have a heart for pigs

Strike this itemfrom your grocery list

More than 60 Hawaiian Electric Company employees and family members recently gave the Humane Society Dog Park an extreme makeover.

Workers took up brushes and rollers to paint the newly renovated fence that runs around the perimeter of the one-third acre park. They also pruned overgrown shrubbery and did an overall sprucing up. Best of all, it was all done with a lot of smiles and laughter.

Mahalo to HECO for its dedication to animals and community.

In previous newsletters, we shared the plight of pigs that suffer a long journey at sea so they could be slaughtered locally and labeled “fresh pork.” Foodland and Times supermarkets announced they will no longer sell these pork products, often labeled “Island Produced” or “Made in Hawaii,” due to the suffering these animals endure to get here. The pigs are transported from Canada and the Mainland in cramped shipping containers. Video documenting the conditions showed pigs left to wallow in their own feces alongside pigs that perished at sea. Upon arrival to Oahu, the pigs may be held in pens under very stressful conditions for up to two weeks prior to slaughter.

Special thanks to animal advocates statewide and Foodland and Times for taking a stand for humane practices.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that chicken jerky products (also marketed as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with serious illness in dogs and are unable to determine the cause.

The FDA has observed an increase in the number of complaints regarding canine illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China.

The following signs that may occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea; increased water consumption and/or increased urination.

Humane Society unleashes public service campaignThe Humane Society has launched a campaign to increase awareness about its programs and services. There is tremendous confusion in Hawaii about who we are. Most think we’re a chapter of Humane Society of the United States and 50% think that we’re a government agency. The truth is, we’re an independent, local nonprofit and Oahu’s only open admissions shelter. In addition, only 3% of residents could recall that the Humane Society is Oahu’s pet lost and found center without prompting and its work in rescue and protection was top of mind for only 3% of those asked.

License to Love! There’s no need to honk for the animals; give your car a sporty new look with a Humane Society license plate decal. It’s $30 and raises funds for your favorite pet charity.

Fill out the application found on our website and mail with your vehicle registration renewal or take to any Satellite City Hall. Call 356-2213 for more details.

“... I noticed a young woman walking along the street, and at the same time suckling several puppies that were wrapped up in a piece of tapa cloth hanging round her shoulders and breasts. The custom of suckling dogs and pigs is common to the natives of the Sandwich Islands. These animals are held by them in great estimation, little inferior to their own offspring ... I often saw them feeding the

young pigs and dogs with the poi made from the taro root, in the same way as a mother would her child.

From the past“Owning a Poi Dog” makes list of things to doHonolulu Magazine named “Own a Poi Dog” as one of 43 things every local must do in a recent issue. Th e editors also listed the Hawaiian Humane Society as the place to go to adopt.

Th e shelter typically has anywhere from 20 to 50 dogs available for adoption.

Other top 43 things to do included jamming on an ukulele, eating shave ice and being an extra on Hawaii Five-0.

Patricia Tiu Memorial Tributes

The family and friends of Patricia Tiu have made gifts to help the Hawaiian Humane Society in her memory and in celebration of her life. Patricia instilled a deep and lasting love for animals in her nine children whose extended families include more than 30 pets. Through gifts by these generous donors, Patricia has created a legacy of caring for so many.

“A life well lived is not measured by how rich one is but how one has enriched the lives of others.” – Ginny Tiu
