As Spring begins to bloom in Oregon elementary schools, we can always count on the same familiar sights: kids finally leaving their heavy coats at home (and not in Lost & Found), less days of “rainy day recesses,” and, for our 3rd- 5th graders, many multiple-choice questions on annual State Assessment Tests. In fact, at the time of this publication, almost every 3rd- 5th grade student at Spring Mountain Elementary has already taken the State Reading Assessment, and will tackle the State Math Test in the upcoming weeks. Add a Science test to the fifth grade schedule, and it’s easy to see why some kids might rather bite all of their Number 2 pencils in half (which partly explains Mr. Long’s odd photo, but more on that later)! So, as friendly revenge from our beloved 3rd - 5th graders, this month’s newsletter is written in a state assessment, multiple-choice format for parents.

OK moms and dads, sharpen your pencils and keep your eyes off the person sitting next to you…here’s your first question:

#1) When this monthly letter arrives either in your e-mail inbox or your child’s backpack (just let us know if you would like a paper copy), you... a) shout, “Hooray!” and immediately start reading b) rejoice because you found it in your child’s backpack before June c) know that you’ll be receiving some helpful information

That was actually a trick question because everybody knows the answer is really d) all of the above. We’ll give you one point just for trying, but this next one won’t be so easy...

#2) Spring Mountain Elementary prides itself on its commitment to helping others-- whether in our own community or across the country. Since the beginning of the school year, which of these caring community projects did not take place at your child’s school? a) kids brought in more than 800 cans of food for needy families b) A record number of students signed up for this year’s Green Team, participating in helpful activities like keeping Mt. Scott Creek clean and recycling plastic bags c) Spring Mountain students and staff gathered up more than $1,000 worth of loose change for kids suffering from leukemia in our annual “Pennies For Patients” coin drive

Alright, another “all of the above” trick question. Thanks to your support, our school had one of its most successful canned food drives in recent memory, and be sure to ask your students about how Spring Mountain helps the environment. If you answered c, we’ll give you a pass just this once. Our “Pennies For Patients” fundraising drive just concluded last week, and I challenged Spring Mountain kids to bring in an average of one dollar per student. If they reached that $530 goal, they’d get a chance to once again choose their reward at my expense. I know -- you’d think I learned my lesson last year when I ended up parading around the school in a wedding dress all day long. Did we make

our goal?? Look for a note coming home soon… Feeling pretty smart so far parents? OK, how about this one...

#3) Now that Spring is here, what is the most meaningful thing you can do to support your children’s learning at Spring Mountain? a) deliver coffee to each teacher b) order each staff member a lifetime supply of red correcting pens c) make sure your student is at school on time every day possible

Although a and b would be nice, the answer is actually c. At Spring Mountain, school starts at 7:45 a.m. At that time, teachers are starting the day with a pre-planned lesson for the entire class or small group. Although this initial lesson may not last long, the entire process sets the tone for the morning to follow. The familiar routine helps foster independence and a sense of purpose for the day. Tardy students miss the transition time that allows them to start the day calmly and confidently. They also enter a busy environment where classmates are already working and aren’t available to chat.Speaking of busy environments, many families are beginning to ask about classroom placements for next year. Although Spring Mountain continues to experience a net gain in total students this year, we are not (so far) scheduled to gain any additional teachers this Fall. So parents, how would you answer this perplexing pop quiz?

#4) By the end of this school year, communication with Spring Mountain Elementary will include: a) a finalized list of all teachers and what grade they will teach next year b) The name of your child’s teacher for the upcoming 2017-18 school year c) An opportunity for parents to provide input about next year’s classroom environment for their children

Unfortunately, the answer is once again c. As a result of our continually fluctuating budget and enrollment, we will not be able to release teachers’ grade level assignments until later this summer. However, if there is anything you feel we should know about your student before being placed in a classroom for next year, please submit that information to me in writing prior to Friday, May 26th. E-mail is just fine, or simply write your thoughts in pen or #2 pencil. Wait, did someone say pencil? Well, see if you can put one to its appropriate use as we conclude this special multiple-choice newsletter: How about this question off an actual sample 5th grade state Math test?

#5) Patti needs to measure the height of a mirror but she forgot her ruler. She uses her pencil (which she later measures to be 7-and-one-fourth inches). The height of the mirror was about 11 pencil lengths. What was the height of the mirror in feet? a) about 5.5 feet b) about 6 feet c) about 6.5 feet

I’d love to give you the answer, but this letter needs to go to press and I just can’t seem to find one of my pencils exactly 7.25 inches

long that isn’t covered in slobber!

#6) This shows: a) Mr. Long needs nutritional help b) He should have his salivary glands checked c) He needs to observe more Math I’m not sure I really want to know how you answered that!

As always, I can’t thank you enough for your support of Spring Mountain Elementary. Although at this time of year I can’t seem to find any usable Number 2 pencils, I never have to look far to locate the area’s Number 1 kids!

Thêm kỳ thi Khoa Học vào thời khoá biểu của lớp năm, sẽ dễ dàng thấy tại sao một số trẻ em lại nhai hết phân nữa cây viết chì #2 (cắt nghĩa phần nào tấm hình lạ thường của ông Long, nhưng ta sẽ nói thêm sau)! Vậy thì để thân ái trả thù cho các học sinh lớp 3-5 yêu dấu của chúng ta, lá thư tháng này được viết dưới hình thức bài thi trắc nghiệm dành cho cha mẹ.

OK ba và mẹ, hãy chuốc nhọn cây viết chì và không được nhìn người ngồi bên cạnh…đây là câu hỏi thứ nhứt:

#1) Khi lá thư hàng tháng này tới hộp thư điện thư hoặc trong ba lô của con em (chỉ cần cho chúng tôi biết là quý vị thích thư viết trên giấy), quý vị … a) la to, “Hooray!” và bắt đầu đọc ngay tức thì b) vui mừng bởi vì quý vị đã tìm thấy nó trong ba lô của con em của bạn trước tháng Sáu c) biết rằng quý vị sẽ nhận được một số thông tin hữu ích

Dù rằng a và b rất hay, câu trả lời thật ra là c. Ở Spring Mountain, trường bắt đầu lúc 7:45 a.m. Khi đó, các giáo viên bắt đầu một ngày bằng những bài học đã được chuẩn bị sẵn cho cả lớp hay cho một nhóm. Mặc dù bài học khởi đầu này không kéo dài nhưng toàn bộ tiến trình tạo nên âm điệu cho buổi sáng sau đó. Thói quen quen thuộc nuôi dưỡng sự độc lập và có ý nghĩa về mục đích trong ngày. Những học sinh đến trễ bị mất thời gian chuyển tiếp cho phép các học sinh bắt đầu một ngày êm thắm và tự tin. Các em lại bước vào một môi trường bận rộn nơi các bạn học đang làm việc và không có thì giờ thăm hỏi.

Nói về môi trường bận rộn, nhiều gia đình đang bắt đầu hỏi về việc xếp lớp cho năm tới. Mặc dù Spring Mountain tiếp tục gia tăng sĩ số học sinh trong năm nay, chúng tôi (cho tới bây giờ) vẫn chưa có lịch trình gia tăng giáo viên trong mùa Thu tới. Registration for New Students for Fall 2017

Registration for Fall has begun! If you know of someone that has moved into your neighborhood let them know they can register now. If you have a student that will be 5 years old on or before September 1st, 2017 they are eligible for Kindergarten. You will need proof of age, proof of address and current immunizations to register. New students grades 1-5 may register with proof of address. Our office hours for are 7:30-3:00 on school days. Best times to register during the day are 9:30-3:00. We look forward to meeting you!

STUDENT PLACEMENT

Class placement input can be submitted to the office beginning May

1st. Parents can provide specific information that could influence class placement for the 2017-2018 school

year. Individual teacher requests should not be included.

All requests should be provided to Mr. Long in writing (letter, e-mail) by the end of May. Please know that we cannot accommodate all requests.

A NOTE FROM THE NURSE:

The weather is warming up. time to get outside and exercise! Bike riding is a great way to get exercise and fresh air and share time as a family. But before you and the kids rush out and start pedaling, there’s an important factor that you need to consider-safety.

Helment Basics

Bicycle helmet use should not be optional for anyone in your family, no matter where you are or how short the ride. In Oregon, it’s the law. Many bike accidents involve a head injury, so a crash could mean permanent brain damage or death for someone who doesn’t wear one while riding. In fact, each year in the United States, about half a million kids are seriously injured in bicycle-related acidness, and most of those injuries could have been avoided if a helmet was worn. To protect against brain injury, make sure your kids wear a correctly fitting helmet on every ride.

Here are some things to keep in mind when buying a helmet:

*Pick bright colors or fluorescent colors that are visible to drivers and other cyclists.* Look for a helmet that’s well ventilated.* Make sure that the helmet has a CPSC or Snell sticker inside. These indicate that the helmet meets standards set by the Consumer

Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or the Snell Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit group that tests helmet safety.* Make sure your child’s helmet fils correctly and can be adjusted.

You should be able to get help finding a well-fitting helmet and adjusting it properly at any bicycle store. When kids wear a helmet, make sure that the straps are fastened. Also make sure they don’t wear any other hat underneath it.

Be sure to replace any helmet made before 1999. Iff your child hits any surface her while wearing a helmet, replace it- helmets lose their capacity to absorb shock after takin serious hits.

2. Wash ALL clothing and bed linens in HOT water. 3. NON-WASHABLE items should be either: dry cleaned, placed in a HOT clothes dryer for

20 minutes (pillows, stuffed toys, etc.), placed in freezer for 48 hours, or sealed in a plastic bag for 14 days.

4. Treat ALL brushes and combs by boiling for 10 minutes OR soaking in lice shampoo for 10 minutes.

HAIR TREATMENT:

1. If using commercial lice hair products, treat all affected household members at the SAME TIME. Before application, wash hair with a basic perfume and conditioner free shampoo.

2. Comb hair thoroughly with a clean comb or brush. 3. Remove ALL NITS with a nit comb, fingernails, or tweezers to prevent REINFESTATION

by any nits not killed by the medications. 4. Notify all people who have recently been in contact with the exposed household member. 5. Contact your physician, health department, or school nurse for further directions

or advice.

SCHOOL NOTIFICATION:

PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU TREAT YOUR CHILD FOR HEAD LICE. This information is kept CONFIDENTIAL, but is important in tracking classroom cases to prevent further spread of head lice.

Chuyện có chí xảy ra, nhất là với trẻ em. Đó không phải là dấu hiệu kém vệ sinh hoặc nhà cửa có sạch hay không. Người nào cũng có thể có chí – không quan hệ tóc dài bao nhiêu hoặc quý vị tắm bao nhiêu lần.

Con em quý vị có chí không? Không phải người nào cũng bị ngứa. Hãy xử dụng một chiếc lược có răng khít để chải tóc ướt và tìm kiếm những con chí nhỏ cỡ hạt mè hoặc trứng nhỏ dính ở tóc. Quý vị nên kiểm tra định kỳ hằng tuần cho mọi người trong gia đình.

Dưới đây là một số hướng dẫn hữu ích để điều trị chí:

TẨY SẠCH NHÀ:

1. Hút bụi tất cả thảm, sàn nhà, nệm giường, bàn ghế và xe. Bỏ bao chứa bụi của máy hút vào thùng rác bên ngoài sau khi xong.

1. Nếu dùng sản phẩm thương mại để trị chí, điều trị tất cả những người có chí trong nhà CÙNG MỘT LÚC. Trước khi áp dụng, gội đầu thật sạch bằng xà bông gội đầu có mùi thơm tiêu chuẩn và không có chất bảo vệ điều kiện của tóc.

TÁI SINH SẢN bằng trứng chí chưa bị thuốc trừ sạch. 4. Thông báo cho tất cả những người mới đây tiếp xúc với người có chí trong nhà. 5. Liên lạc với bác sĩ gia đình, phòng y tế hay y tá trong trường để được hướng dẫn hay cố

vấn thêm.

THÔNG BÁO CHO NHÀ TRƯỜNG:

XIN THÔNG BÁO CHO NHÀ TRƯỜNG BIẾT QUÝ VỊ ĐANG TRỊ CHÍ CHO CON EM. Thông tin này SẼ ĐƯỢC GIỮ KÍN, nhưng điều quan trọng là sẽ kiểm soát các trường hợp xảy ra trong lớp để ngăn không cho chí lây ra thêm.

CÁCH KIỂM SOÁT CHÍ CÁC GIAI ĐOẠN CHỮA TRỊ PHẢI THỰC HIỆN CÙNG NGÀY

1.

Khám xét đầu tóc mỗi người trong gia đình.

2.

Chữa trị TẤT CẢ mọi người trong gia đình CÙNG MỘT LÚC.

3.

Giặt và sấy TẤT CẢ chăn màn (tấm vải trải giường, mền, áo gối) bằng nước nóng.

4.

Bỏ áo gối, thú nhồi bông, gối ôm nhỏ, búp bê…vào máy sấy nóng trong vòng 20 phút.

5. Những vật dụng KHÔNG GIẶT ĐƯỢC hoặc là: 1) giặt sấy khô 2) để trong máy sấy nóng trong 20 phút 3) bỏ trong ngăn đông đá trong 48 giờ HAY 4) khoá kín trong bao ni lông trong 14 ngày

Giặt và sấy TẤT CẢ nón, áo lạnh, áo len và những quần áo khác.

Hút bụi cẩn thận tất cả thảm nhà và thảm lau chân.

Bỏ TẤT CẢ lược và bàn chải tóc vào nước sôi trong 10 phút, HAY ngâm vào xà bông trị chí trong 10 phút.

Dùng lược dầy hay móng tay tước TẤT CẢ TRỨNG CHÍ.

11.

Báo cho nhà trường biết ngày chữa trị và loại thuốc nào được dùng.

12.

Báo cho TẤT CẢ những người mới đâu có thể đã tiếp xúc với người có chi (láng diềng, bà con, bạn bè, nơi giữ trẻ, nhà thờ, nhóm bạn trẻ…)

13.

Lập lại việc chữa trị trong vòng 7-10 ngày.

14.

Khám xét đầu tóc mọi người trong gia đình MỖI NGÀY trong vòng hai tuần lễ.
