Well, hello there! You have no idea how excited I am to share these felicitations with you! It’s been a long

time coming, but I do believe I am right where I belong. And the feeling is almost unexplainable.

If you had the opportunity to read “Sisters in the Entrepreneurial Spirit,” last month’s cover story featuring me and Michelle Taylor Willis, then you will understand my jubilation. But just in case you missed it, allow me to give you the short version. This is my second round at magazine publishing. Being here at South Fulton Lifestyle allows me to fulfill my life’s dream of extolling, encouraging and empowering others. It also comes at a time when the 25-year-old prediction given to me that South Fulton would grow into the burgeoning community that it is today has

been surpassed; little did we know that we would be an actual city. How cool is that?!

I look forward to many good times with you. The best is yet to come!

Peace & Blessings,

ATLANTA-AREA STUDENTS TO TEST SPANISH SKILLS IN HAVANA, CUBA

Students from The Green School, an Atlanta-area dual-language immersion elementary school program, visited Cuba in February for an intensive cultural learning experience. As The Green School’s mission centers on fostering a love of culture, language, service and diversity among their kindergarten through third-grade scholars, international educational travel is a natural addition to the experience that teachers and staff seek to infuse into the classroom every day.

The Green School students collectively decided to schedule their trip to coincide with the International Book Fair in Havana, because of their passion for children’s literature. The six-day visit also included

tours of Havana; Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site; and Finca Vigia, Ernest Hemingway’s home in Cuba. To practice their Spanish skills, students interacted with local children while working on projects at a Havana community arts center. The students ended their time in Cuba with a visit to the U.S. Embassy, where they partic-ipated in the very first embassy briefing for elementary school-aged children conducted at the Havana-based consulate.

In preparation for their visit, students studied important figures in Cuban culture, such as Jose Marti, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Ernest Hemingway, and learned about the political and social history of the Caribbean island. They also discovered Latin music, like salsa and son, in their twice-weekly music classes.

“I’m so excited and happy about going to Cuba. Our whole class got to go on a trip to another country. And we get to tell our kids about this one day, if we have any!” says Tatu Paulino, an 8-year-old student at The Green School.

International field trips are nothing new to veteran students at The Green School. Last year, a small group of students and par-ents went to Costa Rica. “Authentic experiences are instrumental in bringing language learning alive, motivating students to really embrace the target language and understanding the value that being multilingual provides. With these excursions, we’re giving our students a unique chance to immerse and engage all of their senses, which is not an opportunity that is generally available to children this age in a school environment, particularly for children of color. We truly strive to make the world our kids’ classroom,” says one teacher at The Green School.

Participation in this year’s trip has tripled, with 34 students, teach-ers, parents and siblings taking part. Malika Smith, parent of a kin-dergartener at The Green School, says, “When I tell friends, family and coworkers that my 6-year-old son and his classmates are going on a field trip to Cuba, they’re always shocked. They think back to their elementary school days and remember going to local plays or

museums, which the kids do frequently at The Green School, too. But the school is taking it a step further and extending their ‘playground’ to include areas outside of their local, and even national, realm.”

Located in East Point, Georgia, The Green School is a primary-level extension of its sister school, Little Linguists International Preschool, with locations in East Point and Decatur. Both the preschool and elementary school programs employ language-immersion mod-els, with preschoolers having full immersion exposure to Spanish and Mandarin, and elementary school students operating under a dual-immersion Spanish and English model.

GET ON TRACK WITH THE YOUTH CYCLING LEAGUE AT THE VELODROME

Soccer? Tried it. Basketball? Check. Baseball? Done that. If your kids have tried a range of sports and still haven’t found one that piques their interest, perhaps you need to get them on track!

“On track” in this case means on a bicycle racing track, or a velo-drome. East Point, south of Atlanta, is home to Dick Lane Velodome, where kids can participate in the Youth Cycling League.

The thrill of going fast on the banked velodrome surfaces draws many people to the exciting sport of track cycling. Imagine a NASCAR track, then add bicycles without gears or brakes on a smaller track (one-fifth of a mile with a 36-degree banking), and that’s what the DLV looks like.

Kids need not fear the bowl-like appearance of the velodrome. The Youth Cycling League starts out with the basics of riding a bike without brakes and gears, and kids start on the flattest loop of the track before progressing.

“We have a controlled, car-free environment where kids get expert instruction and participate in a sport most other kids don’t even know about,” says track manager Robert Evans. “We provide the bicycles, the helmets and as they progress, even the special shoes and kit (uniform) to really get serious.”

Evans explains that the kids enjoy the track for the challenge. “Track cycling is unlike any other sport, and they just keep coming back. Many have gone on to race at other velodromes and become involved with other forms of cycling, such as road or mountain biking.”

The Youth Cycling League currently draws participants from 19 Metro Atlanta counties and is a free, donation-based program taught by professional cycling coaches and former professional cyclists. The program is open to kids ages 8-16 years old, grouped by ability levels. All riders start at the beginner level before advancing to intermediate and advanced levels based on how quickly they master the skills taught and show their improved ability to ride.

The 2017 Youth Cycling League began in March, with a beginner program at 5:15 p.m. and an intermediate program at 6:30 p.m. All new riders must attend the beginners time, even if they have previous cycling experience. Kids will have a chance to race in front of friends and family during the velodrome’s three Pro Races this summer.

Located just seven miles south of Downtown Atlanta, the Dick Lane Velodrome is one of only 26 active velodromes in the entire country. Built long before the 1996 Olympic Velodrome at Stone Mountain, the DLV still stands 20 years after the Olympic Velodrome’s dismantling.

n 15 years, South Metro has seen the opening of the second-largest convention center in the Georgia International Convention Center, the opening and expansion of the Google Data Center in Douglas County, a boom in the movie industry on the south side and the move of the headquarters of Porsche Cars North America to the Hapeville area. Those are just a few of

the developments taking place in the South Metro area from 2003 to 2017. These and other highlights were spotlighted during the 15th Annual South Metro Development Outlook (SMDO) conference in February.

Held at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, the event is the brainchild of Michael Hightower, managing partner, The Collaborative Firm, LLC. SMDO serves as a platform to convene industry experts, corporate executives, government leaders and elected officials interested in fostering economic growth in south metropolitan Atlanta. SMDO highlights Clayton, Coweta, Douglas, Fayette, Henry, South Fulton and Spalding counties as well as the city of Atlanta. This year, Cobb and DeKalb counties were also featured.

“I really want to applaud Michael Hightower for his work over the last 15 years,” says Ceasar Mitchell, chair, Atlanta City Council. “Much of the energy you see now on the Southside is due in large part to Michael’s vision.”

Along with 2017 Presenting Sponsor Comcast, SMDO presented a host of awards to community and government leaders:◆South Metro Development Outlook Award: City of Atlanta, Mayor Kasim Reed, City of Atlanta◆Corporate Partner Award: Georgia Power, Lisa Smith, Metro South Region Manager, Georgia Power ◆Community Catalyst Award: Georgia International Convention Center, Mayor Jack Longino, City of College Park◆Regional Community Leadership Award: Atlanta Regional Commission, Kerry Armstrong, Chairman, Atlanta Regional Commission ◆Economic Development Award: Atlanta Motor Speedway, Commissioner Dee Clemons, Henry County Board of Commissioners◆Advocacy Award: Empire Board of Realtists, Sharon Henry◆Visionary Award: T. Dallas Smith & CompanySessions included the 2017 Economic Forecast and South Metro’s New Leadership, which introduced new county leaders June Wood (chair,

Henry County Board of Commissioners) and Michael Thurmond, CEO of DeKalb County. Other county leaders participating in the session on South Metro’s New Leadership included Lisa Cupid, vice chairman, Cobb County Board of Commissioners; Eric Maxwell, chairman, Fayette County Board of Commissioners; and Oz Nesbitt, Sr., chairman, Rockdale County Board of Commissioners.

Two other SMDO 2017 topics were Transportation on the Go in South Metro and the South Metro Community Improvement District (CID) Update. When accepting his award, Mayor Reed encouraged the group to move beyond celebrating the accomplishments of the past 15 years and

to “double-down, work harder because this is South Metro’s moment.”

Hope Is Not a Business Strategy

As a consultant, I have had in-depth conversations with hundreds of business owners about their businesses. During these talks, I always ask, "What is the

one thing that you need to get your business to the next level?" The most common answer is “more customers to increase sales,” which is a good answer. My next question is, “What is your plan to attract more customers to your business?” I often hear things like “We have been doing <insert advertising tactic here> and <insert business tactic here>, but we are not getting the results we want.” The inference is that despite unfavorable results, there isn’t a strong enough impetus to change their core strategy, but there is hope that things will change (eventually).

If your business is not achieving desired results, you should re-examine and perhaps revamp your core business strategy. Useful tools for my clients undergoing this process include the creation of a one-page strategic plan, a one-page business plan and a one-page marketing plan.

Your core strategy provides a road map to get you from where you are to where you want to be, but it also provides a touchstone to make better business decisions. The business strategy should answer the following questions:

• How will you find and maintain customers?  • How will you create competitive differentiation?  • What is your competitive advantage?  • What is in your playbook to compete and win?As business people, we can get “stuck” (i.e., blind

spots, analysis-paralysis, biases, etc.), choosing not to make any changes and thus maintaining the status quo. You can become unstuck and improve your business savvy by bringing individuals like the following into your business circle of trust:

• A mentor • A coach • A group of business peers  • A consultantHope (confident expectation) is not a replacement

for a business strategy. However, hope coupled with faith (trust and assurance) in yourself and your dreams can carry you through the trials and tribulations on your journey to success.

There’s a lot to be said about George G. Andrews. Many peo-ple know him as the visionary leader of Capitol City Bank & Trust Company. As its founder, he also served as president and CEO for 22 years and as chair of Capitol City Bancshares, Inc.’s Capital Formation and Strategic Initiatives Committee. In these roles, Andrews fulfilled his life’s dream of meeting the needs of underserved communities by focusing on providing opportunities for small businesses to access capital for growth and development. Today, his territory has been enlarged tremendously as he oversees Business Development/Marketing for the Municipal Securities Division of City National Bank, a New Jersey-based full service commercial bank.

A graduate of Washington High School and Morehouse College, Andrews is truly a community servant at heart. His organizational affiliations and benefactors are too numerous to name without mak-ing omissions. It can truthfully be stated that he has sown seeds of commitment, trustworthiness, perseverance, collaboration and com-munity awareness through student banking programs, scholarship

Additionally, Andrews’ contributions to the community are immea-surable, creating a legacy that continues to inspire and ease the way for wealth, prosperity, community empowerment, success and economic development for generations to come. Andrews lives by Sir Isaac Newton’s quote: “If I could see far, it is because I stand on the shoulders of others.”

“I realize that if those people hadn’t helped me I wouldn’t be where I am today, so I am obligated to share what I have,” says Andrews. “I am committed to helping others and am honored to be in a position to do both. My experiences, more than anything, have ingrained in me the understanding that it is not how much you gain in life but how much you give that matters. I love to give back because of the many, many people that helped me.” He and his wife, Janice, are the proud parents of three adult children and the doting grandparents of eight grandchildren.“Citizen of the Month” features a South Fulton resident who continually

5 Fashion Finds for Spring 2017

ARTICLE MARIA SMITH

Spring in the South is that delightfully short period of time when the Dogwoods

are blooming and color abounds everywhere. Before the heat and humidity of summer sets in, spring is the time to get outdoors and show off the newest fashion trends.

Cree Davis, a resident of the Audubon Forest area in Southwest Atlanta, thinks the arrival of spring is magical in Atlanta. “When spring arrives, it's time for a colorful sundress, a bold sun hat and an oversized bag,” exclaims Davis. The married model, actress and mother of two loves the brightness of the season of spring and looks forward to trying out this year’s trends.

Leaning toward retro, with a touch of street, a bit oversized and colorful, fashion trends found on the runways aren’t always transfer-able to areas like South Fulton, but key pieces can be incorporated into just about every-one’s wardrobes. Check out these five fashion trends to shop for this spring.

 1. OVERSIZED ACCESSORIES

From necklaces with mega-sized pendants that graze the navel and statement-making earrings to XXXL purses that hold it all together, exaggerated sizes are trending this spring. Davis absolutely loves carrying oversized bags.

“I have a family of four, so an oversized bag allows me to fashionably carry all the necessary items for my fam-ily without looking like a ‘bag lady,’” she laughs. “I throw on my pastel flowing sun dress, big sun hat, pack all the necessary items in my oversized bag and I feel just as graceful as the butterflies I see flying around in my yard.”

2. ROMANTIC CHIC Delicate florals are always reminiscent of spring, but

this year they are updated with unique cuts and an urban edge. Don’t be afraid of pairing a romantic dress with a retro baseball cap or a funky platform sandal for a cool juxtaposition.

3. 80S GLAM

Get ready for some “Material Girl” action this spring with puffy sleeves, ruffled blouses and metallic accesso-ries, unapologetically declaring the 80s glam comeback.

4. ATHLEISURE

This spring, wearing your yoga pants all day doesn’t mean you have to look like you’re spending the day in yoga pants. The newer, sexier take on athleisure wear includes sporty separates, body-skimming styles and high-waisted leggings that take you from the gym and grocery shopping to brunch without skipping a beat.

5. STRIPES

Get ready to see a resurgence of Rainbow Brite this sea-son. Look for rainbow-colored stripes in every shape, size and silhouette. Consider incorporating this trend in acces-sories like earrings or going bold with an accent piece.

FROM LOSS TO TRIUMPH

Confused and grief stricken after losing her infant brother to Down syndrome, 13-year-old Tosha Rogers made a vow.   “I decided I didn’t ever want to feel this way again, not knowing, not understanding,” recalls Rogers. “I didn’t want anyone else to feel this way either.”

The determined vow sustained Rogers as she grew from a heartbroken girl in Philadelphia into a renowned OB/GYN in South Atlanta. Recognized for her plain speaking, keeping-it-real style, Dr. Rogers has made her mark in television, radio and print media. She has been a frequent guest on the Kandi Koated Nights show (hosted by Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss), and been featured in numerous magazines including Essence, Ebony, and Self.

Regardless of the forum, Rogers’ goal is the same. She strives to empower patients with the understanding to make confident decisions about medical care.

Referring to the three-month period her brother was hospital-ized before passing away, Rogers says, “I realized then that lack of understanding could drive disparities in medicine. My family could only make the decisions we made (for my brother) based on what we understood, and how things were explained.”

EMPOWERING AND ADVOCATING

“With gynecology, it’s not just physical. Most of the problems that have caused you to come in occurred because of your sex-ual partner,” explains Rogers. To help patients feel comfortable opening up about their issues, Rogers says she encourages them to “ask me whatever, tell me whatever.”

“I do spend a lot of time with my patients upfront,” says Rogers. In fact, it is not uncommon for first-time patients to get up to an hour of the doctor’s time at her private practice, Atlanta Premier OB/GYN.

Rogers’ light-hearted demeanor and judgment-free attitude help her earn patient trust. She emphasizes that she is willing to speak in any style to make sure patients feel informed and empowered regarding their sexual health.

Beyond serving her patients locally, Rogers is fueled by a sense of urgency surrounding the high risks black women face with certain sexually transmitted diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 48% of black women test positive for Herpes (versus 16% of the general U.S. population). Nationally, African Americans account for a staggering 62% of new HIV cases among women.

The statistics alarm Rogers. “I feel like I need to rescue the black female. I want to help ladies realize their behaviors are harmful,” she says.

For now, Rogers spends time volunteering with community organizations and raising awareness through her medical prac-tice. But she hopes to do more. “I feel like I’m reaching my patients. But I want to reach more women, with a larger platform…so that (awareness) takes on momentum and becomes a movement.”

Rogers believes that sisterhood can also be a powerful force in helping women protect each other. Her message to other women is simple: “Be your sister's keeper.”

T he commercialization of the food processing system and the unsavory farming practices associated with mass produced foods has led many discerning foodies to seek a healthier alternative. e farm to table movement was born out of the

need to source ethically harvested food while fostering a greater connec-tion between the consumer and the source of the food. Central to this farming culture is a focus on animal welfare to promote humanely raised animals with grass-fed, free-range and pastured practices. e locally sourced produce is not subjected to prolonged freezing and processing to preserve its shelf-life. Fruits and vegetables that make it on our dinner table are transported an average of 1,500 miles before being sold (source: Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture). In order to preserve the produce for that length of travel, industrial farmers harvest the fruits and veggies before they fully ripen. is practice allows the fruits to ripen during transport but it arrives lacking many of the vitamins and minerals that would have been there if those fruits were left to fully ourish before being harvested, packed and shipped.

Locally sourced fruits, vegetables, meats and cheeses signicantly benet the local economy of the consumers who purchase these foods, and the environmental impact is favorable since the transportation vehicles that carry the produce are high fuel consumption vehicles with a heavy carbon footprint. However, as a physician that manages pain in patients, the biggest benet of this trend is the culture of consumers paying attention to the nutrition content of their meals. Obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and diets high in saturated fats contribute to the inammatory states that aect pain syndromes. My hope is that sustainable farming with locally sourced fruits and vegetables will eventually reduce the cost for access to healthy food. Part of the obesity epidemic stems for the relatively low cost of processed foods, fast foods and saturated fats. Hopefully, when the farm comes to the table we are choosing to reduce the consumption of white breads, sugary drinks, fried foods, chips and pastries. Instead, we should be consuming more carrots, beets, cherries, grapes, onions and teas rich in anti-oxidants.

I will admit, just before penning this article I thoroughly enjoyed a red-velvet cupcake at a dinner party hosted by my wife. Our friends brought these delights from a local company that rhymes with “Yami-cakes”. ese treats were sublime, however, I also had a fruit salad with an assortment of citrus, a green salad with dark, green leafy veggies, and baked chicken legs. I don’t feel guilty about the cupcake, I deserve it and so do you if you adhere to principles of moderation and a healthy active lifestyle.

WANTS YOU TO TREAT YOUR FEET

Tobi Todd

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO LADIES ON WEARING HEELS?

“Wear heels only 30% of the time,” he chuckles. “If you would not walk a football field in heels all day, why would you walk the length of a football field in heels all day? Evaluate how far and how long you will be walking in those heels. Treat your feet well.”WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE ABOUT GOING BAREFOOT?

“Going barefoot is actually natural. However, shoes were created to protect your feet. Always inspect your feet after going barefoot; I would like to see people inspect their feet daily.”WHAT TYPE OF DAILY FOOT CARE SHOULD PEOPLE BE PRACTICING?

“Foot care is essential to your health, so every day you should wash your feet and inspect them well. Do not ignore a problem, and embrace the toes too, as they also need attention.”

Visit Dr. Tobi Todd’s private practice at 5835 Campbellton Road, Suite 201 in South Fulton or learn

more at FamFootCare.com. Contact Dr. Todd at 404.334.0696.

Physician and surgeon Tobi Todd, M.D., recently shared a wealth of knowl-

edge about foot care, a subject he knows a lot about. Specializing in the field of Podiatric Medicine since 2003, Todd is a seasoned podiatrist following in the footsteps of his father, Frazier B. Todd Sr., M.D. As early as age 14, Tobi knew he wanted to be like his father and change lives through foot health, so he set out on a path to do just that.

After graduating from Woodward Academy right here in South Fulton, Todd attended Georgia Tech, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1996. Continuing his jour-ney into Podiatric Medicine, he headed to the California College of Podiatric Medicine, the same school his father had graduated from in 1972, and earned his professional degree in 2000. Dr. Todd completed a primary podi-atric and surgical residency in San Antonio and Temple, Texas, and is Board Certified in Foot Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

“I specialize in the general health of feet,” he says. “I am well trained in diabetic foot care, heel pain, ankle instability and toe nail health.” Below, Dr. Todd addresses some of the most common foot care concerns.WHAT FOOT CHALLENGE DO YOU ADDRESS

THE MOST OFTEN?

“Unfortunately, it is diabetic foot care. I really want to educate diabetics further on their foot care. If you are diabetic, you need to pay extra attention to your feet and have regular checkups with a podiatrist. Your foot health is essential to your well-being.”

DESIGNED FOR DRAMA

George Vanderbilt’s home – Biltmore House – currently serves as the setting for Biltmore Estate’s latest costume exhibition, “Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics.” Award-winning costumes worn by actors Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Robert Downey Jr., Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman and more are from recent films based on favorite books in Vanderbilt’s 22,000-volume collection. The exhibi-tion runs through July 4, 2017.

The costumes come from 14 films and bring literary characters to life, from the entertaining detective duo of Holmes and Watson in “Sherlock Holmes” to the creation of the Peter Pan story in “Finding Neverland.” The grand fashions of 19th century Russia are portrayed in “Anna Karenina,” while the simpler attire of Jane Austen’s characters in “Pride and Prejudice” portrays one of the BBC miniseries’ most memorable scenes.

Admission to “Designed for Drama: Fashion from the Classics” is included with a visit to Biltmore.

The Inn on Biltmore Estate is hosting a special Tea Series in con-junction with “Designed for Drama.” Each tea features a themed menu, lively entertainment, and imaginative décor designed to bring the literary classics to life. The theme for April 15 is “Far from the Maddening Crowd.” On May 13, the theme is “Twelfth Night.” Additional cost is required to attend.

SPRINGTIME ON DISPLAY WITH BILTMORE BLOOMS

In addition to seeing “Designed for Drama,” Biltmore’s manicured gardens are just steps away from Biltmore House. The estate’s annual springtime celebration, Biltmore Blooms, runs through late May and honors landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision for Biltmore’s grounds and gardens. April and May promise irises, roses, acres of azaleas, with mountain laurels and rhododendrons close behind. Biltmore’s horticulture experts will be on hand during Biltmore Blooms weekends, manning “Ask a Gardener” stations in the Walled Garden. Guests can ask questions and gather information to inform their own gardening pursuits.

SPECIAL EVENTS DURING BILTMORE BLOOMS

• A Gardener’s Place Demonstrations: Daily free demonstrations are offered on creating spring floral arrangements. “Orchids for Everyone” takes place at 1 p.m. and “Creating a Butterfly Garden” takes place at 2 p.m.

BILTMORE LEGACY

The Biltmore Legacy houses a small exhibition of Vanderbilt family wedding fashion. A highlight is the display of the Lee family wedding veil worn by Mary Lee Ryan at her marriage to George Vanderbilt’s grandson in 1957, and also worn by her cousin Jacqueline Lee Bouvier at her 1953 marriage to future president John F. Kennedy.

The Outdoor Center is where guests may register for a session of sport clay shooting, Segway tours, horseback riding, carriage rides, fly-fishing, stand-up paddle boarding, hiking and biking trails, float trips along the French Broad River and the Land Rover Driving Experience.

Visit Antler Hill Farm and Farmyard to see the animals that call Biltmore home. Each spring many of them welcome cuddly youngsters including baby goats, lambs and chicks.

DINING AT BILTMORE

Biltmore’s seven restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, with menus that feature fresh produce and meats from the estate itself, as well as award-winning Biltmore Wines and seasonal items.

SPRING SAVINGS FOR DAYTIME VISITS

Healthy Lifestyle

As women, we know all too well about the race against the clock. It just seems

like there are never enough hours in a day. Due to our overwhelming and demanding schedules, many of us are not getting the nutrition that our bodies need to maintain optimal health. Many women feel that eating healthy is just too difficult and time consum-ing. However, it is vitally important that we make our health priority. The environment is toxic, overworking our bodies is toxic and not getting enough sleep is toxic. When you add those factors in with a nutrient-deprived diet, you are creating a recipe for disaster. Despite popular belief, eating healthy doesn’t have to be complicated; it just takes some pre-plan-ning and discipline. If we don’t make a choice to implement healthy eating changes now, our bodies, careers, families and businesses may suffer later. Make a decision today  to make your health priority by following the tips listed below.

It literally takes me less than three minutes to make a smoothie and I can pack it with a variety of produce, protein, vita-mins and minerals. I usually will spend 30-45 minutes twice a month making smoothie bags. I take sandwich size Ziploc bags and pack them with greens (spinach, kale and/or lettuce) and fruit. I place six of these bags inside of a large freezer bag and then into the freezer. I normally make two or three freezer

This first tip may seem like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised as to how much you are compromising your health by eating filler foods and fast food. Do you find yourself eating chips, candy, cookies, bread and fast food just to hold you over until the next meal? If so, it’s time to eliminate the junk and implement a plan.

bags full each time. Then when I am rushing to get out of the house I can throw the con-tents into my blender along with my liquid of choice and protein powder (which contains pea protein, chia seeds, quinoa, pumpkin seeds and coconut). Boom! My three-min-ute, nutrient packed meal is done.

Tip #4 – Eat Fresh: This is a simple tip that will pay off significantly. You should make it a routine to consume at least 50% of your meal as produce, preferably raw. There are vitamins and minerals that your body can only get from fresh fruits and vege-tables, so pack on the produce.

Tip #5 – Water Works: Of course we know to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but how many of us actually do? Most of us, due to our daily activity, weight and lifestyle, need more than 64 ounces of water each day. The easiest way to accomplish this is to ALWAYS keep a bottle/glass of water with you. Drink a glass when you first wake up, a glass 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after each meal/snack and an hour before going to bed. If you can’t remember all of that, then simply set a “water” alarm on your phone.

I hope these tips help you incorporate healthier eating into your busy lifestyle.

write out our meals for the week on a dry erase board. I include breakfast, lunch and dinner. This makes my life much easier once the weekly madness ensues. I also cook two dinners on Sunday afternoon, which means I will have pre-cooked meals in the fridge until Wednesday. It's more work on Sunday afternoon, but it also equates to less work and stress during the week. Another thing that really helps is to pack a lunch and/or snack bag whenever leaving home for more than a couple of hours. This way you don’t fall victim to the fast food trap. You may say, “Who has time for that?” Although, we make time for the things that matter to us the most. How much time are you wasting on social media or watching TV? Simply trade in a few of those hours every week to invest in yourself and your family.

It Was All Very NecessaryHave you ever wondered why you’ve had to face certain life expe-

riences? Unless you have lived a life free from pain, disappointment, frustration or mistakes, I’m sure you’ve experienced situations that left much to be desired. And if you had to do it all over again, you might like to rewrite some chapters of your story…or exclude them entirely! In the process of examining the hard times you’ve faced, you may find yourself seeking answers: Why must I cry these tears? Am I not good enough? Why am I not farther along in life? Why must things be so difficult for me but such a breeze for others? When will the dark days be over? The unease only intensifies when you know you’re doing your very best, yet you’re not feeling the satisfaction of things getting better.

While every situation is different, one thing is constant: Everything happens for a reason. You will either learn from an experience, garner strength from it, grow stronger or continue to be plagued by it until at least one of the aforementioned outcomes is achieved.

But be encouraged! I have experienced such a wide range of ups and downs that I can assure you that regardless of how difficult those experiences may have been, they were all very necessary. The only way to discover this truth, however, is to persevere and see the end result. Anyone can give up; real winners press on, even when they’re forced to take a detour or plan a whole new route. So the next time challenges come your way, don’t fret. Instead, consider handling them as building blocks to your ultimate success. Count every challenge as very neces-sary and, in time, you’ll find yourself reaping the rewards of this truth.

Excited about your destiny? I am!
