MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

Sublime Princes,

I have great hopes that this message finds everyone well and eager to join with us in the upcoming Spring Assembly. We have just survived the winter that wasn’t ( by Canadian Standards ) and everything that grows is about two to three weeks ahead of schedule. The temperature as I write this has been around 20°C for several days now – glorious.

I encourage every member, particularly those of you who have sponsored candidates, to join with us at our Balloting Assembly on May 1, 2017. I cannot stress enough the importance of the Sponsors supporting their Candidates during the Assembly. Your attendance will impress upon our class the importance we place on the lessons taught by Scottish Rite Masonry. We hope that every Sponsor will be in attendance on Saturday May 6 following the 32nd degree to present their respective Candidates with their Red Collars.

At the Luncheon on Saturday, we welcome as our speaker Illustrious Brother Terry A. McLean, 33°, our Sovereign Grand Commander, on the occasion of his Official Visit to the Valley of Hamilton. Please take this opportunity to hear his words of wisdom and inspiration. On behalf of all the members of Moore Sovereign Consistory, I welcome our Sovereign Grand Commander and thank him for taking the time to be with us and enlighten us with his message.

At our luncheon, we will also be able to witness the Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation in action. Ill. Bro. William A. Atkinson, 33°, Deputy for Ontario, will also be with us and will be making his “ Deputy Bursary “ presentation on your behalf to a deserving recipient in the health profession. Please make a point of joining us on this occasion.

To the members of our Fall Class, now is your opportunity to see several more of the degrees we keep telling you about. The strength and vitality of this Consistory comes from our members who attend and participate. Come and enjoy yourself! Help support the members of the Spring Class take their first steps in the last phase of their journey through the Scottish Rite.

To the members of our Spring Class – welcome!! Over the time

frame of the Assembly, you will witness the efforts, dedication and exertions of various degree casts, stage and lighting crews, sound crews, catering staff and many others, all of whom are dedicated, experienced and strive tirelessly to make your experience here memorable and meaningful. We hope that the degrees you will see ( approximately one third of the degrees portrayed over three successive Assemblies and Reunions ) will provide enjoyment, enlightenment and considerable education. Should you have any questions about your journey with us, ask any Officer for help. They are all wearing their red name badges and will be pleased to assist you.

On behalf of all members of Moore Sovereign Consistory, let me congratulate the following Illustrious Brethren who have been nominated to receive their Thirty-third Degree at the Supreme Council Annual Sessions in Montreal this September:

Ill. Bro. William R. DenisonIll. Bro. Robert G. GordonIll. Bro. Brian T. KiernanIll. Bro. Joseph W. Lewis

Brethren, the Officers and I look forward to being with you at this Assembly. Please join us! Your presence will enhance the experience for all of us.

Sincerely and fraternally,

John R. Hanna, 33°Commander-in-Chief

THE TOWERS

The land on which the Scottish Rite stands was part of the Crown Grant of land to Caleb Reynolds, U.E. on December 15, 1796. It was sold to Jean Baptiste Rousseaux, whose widow sold 500 acres in 1816 to James Mills and Peter Hess. James Mills settled on the 240 acres west of Queen Street and in or about 1835, he built Hamilton’s first brick house on the site. In July 1884, Mr. Mills’ estate sold the property to George T. Tuckett, son of George E. Tuckett, who had founded the Tuckett Tobacco Company and who served as Mayor of Hamilton in 1896.

In 1892, George T. Tuckett retained local architect James Balfour to design a residence for him on the property. It was completed in 1895. This building is now the Scottish Rite Club. Because of the typical “Balfouresque” architecture, the building was named “THE TOWERS”. The iron fence was built ten years later. It is similar to the fence which surrounds Buckingham Palace in London, England.

The oak dining table in the Coffee Room is the original table made to order for George T. Tuckett. The woodwork in the Club, oak, bird’s-eye maple, birch and cherry, was made in the furniture factory of John Hoodless & Sons, Hamilton.

In 1920, a group of Scottish Rite leaders in Hamilton bought it as a future home for the Scottish Rite in Hamilton. The cornerstone of the Cathedral was laid on May 31st, 1922, by M. Wor. Bro. W. N. Ponton, K.C., the Grand Master. The building was opened and dedicated on May 7th, 1923, by the Sovereign Grand Commander, Sir John M. Gibson, K. C. M. G.

On September 30, 2007, our Cathedral was dedicated to the honour and in the name of Ill. Bro. Norman E. Byrne, a Past Grand Master and Sovereign Grand Commander. A beautiful display case of his various regalia’s now adorns the entranceway to the Cathedral.

Title to the property is held by a corporation entitled “TOWERS INC.”, the corporation being owned by the three Scottish Rite Bodies which meet here.
