Horatio Alger, Ragged Dick

working as bootblacks or shoeshine boys.
Author Horatio Alger wrote novels about these
boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to
middle-class security and comfort through hard
work and determination. Mr. Feingold will read
excerpts from Alger’s most famous novel
Ragged Dick and discuss what life was like in
Gilded Age New York.
