TUESDAY LECTURE SERIES AT A GLANCE

LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY COURSE TITLE

1950s: Communism, Conformity & Civil Rights

If the parents of Baby Boomers were part of the “Greatest Generation,” what are the Boomers?

Chopped liver? Join us in a conversation about the 1950s. Bob will bring some facts you may be unaware

of about this period. You bring some recollections. Beware: not everything during this period is as happy

as Lucy or The Beaver would have had you believe. The course is open to those born before 1947 and

after 1963 as well as those born during those years. (It was a 15-year-long decade, okay?) You will not

be required to duck and cover under the desks.

Instructor: Bob Pearson Bob taught at the University of Pennsylvania for ten years, being voted best teacher by the Fels Institute

of Government's graduating class of 2011. He is currently attending a course on world religions at

Valencia College and has been engaged in independent study of religions for the past three years. The

tentative title of his current book project is Blind Faith: What My Minister Didn't Tell Me About

Christianity. He earned a PhD in political science from the University of Chicago and taught Sunday

    school many years ago.

    3 Classes — February 11, 18, 25

    Thursday 10:30 — 11:45AM

    A Journey of Italian Ancestry

In this course we will explore a personal journey to pursue dual Italian citizenship through ancestry,

known as jure sanguinis (by law of bloodline). It’s a journey that many people make every year and the

law and criteria continue to change. But this course is NOT just for those of Italian descent. We will

explore the resources beyond Ancestry.com. We will learn how to order records, how to search the

National Archives and order certified records, and how to access the US Citizenship and Immigration

Services records. Come along and learn more about your ancestors, so that you can pass that

    knowledge to the next generation!

Instructor: Dan Zagata Dan is the Managing Director of Evershore Financial Group, an independent comprehensive financial

services firm. Dan brings 19 years of experience working with professionals, businesses, and non-profits

to help them realize their financial potential and goals. Dan earned a BA in Economics and MBA in

    Wednesday 12:00 — 1:15PM

American Icons: John D. Rockefeller, Frances Langford and Salvador Dali

These three people have led very different lives; John D. Rockefeller, as the founder & president of

Standard Oil, became America's 1st billionaire over 100 years ago. Was he a tyrant or generous

philanthropist? Everyone was "In the Mood for Love" when Frances Langford, renowned Big Band

singer, rose to fame from radio to the movies during Hollywood's Golden Era. She was also the Armed

Forces Sweetheart, performing for the troops in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Salvador Dali produced more

Ancient Greek Influences on the Contemporary Church's Views on Women

Plato and Patriarchalism. This course will survey Plato's writings about the nature and role of women in

ancient Greek society, and then trace how those patriarchal views have persisted even until the present

day in the Christian Church. We all inherit ideas and thoughts from the culture that surrounds us and

the generations that preceded us. Ideas can be amazingly persistent! It is interesting to trace the

history of certain ideas, such as the role of women in society and the church, and then pause to consider

whether or not the origins of those ideas justify their ongoing acceptance. We will discuss reasons to

conclude that Plato's world view does not warrant such continued influence on this topic. This will be a

fun look at history and at our current ideas too!

    Historic Kidnappings

Join us as we explore three prominent kidnapping cases of the twentieth century.

In Class 1, we’ll discuss the Lindbergh kidnapping. Charles A. Lindbergh and Ann Morrow Lindbergh had

their first child taken from his crib in 1932. Was this act committed by an individual or by a gang? Many

theories have been put forth over the years. This class will consider a most recent one.

In Class 2, we’ll look at Patty Hearst’s abduction in 1974. Hearst, the heiress to a large family fortune,

was kidnapped by the Symbionese Liberation Army. We will discuss how the Stockholm Syndrome

appears to have affected this case.

In Class 3, we will study the case of the Muse brothers, five and eight years old, who found themselves

in a circus sideshow act. This is a "Jim Crow" story from the turn of the last century. It involves a

mother's love and that of her sons -- over twenty-five years of searching for each other. The story will

    Plant Hunters

Have you ever wondered where many of your household and landscape plants originated? Wonder no

more as we explore the fascinating world of Plant Hunting! We will look at Sir Joseph Banks, a British

explorer and naturalist, who sailed with Captain James Cook. And let’s not ignore the accomplishments

of the ladies. Learn about the lives of naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian who explored South

America in the 17th century, Anna Atkins who studied seaweed and was one of the first women

photographers, and Emily Dickinson who was better known in her lifetime for her skills as a gardener

and botanist than for her poetry.

These scientists all had a passion for travel and exploration and an absolute love of the plants they

Women in the Arts: Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt, the American Impressionist painter who lived in France for 54 years and co-founded the

French Impressionist Art Movement, was an artist with a life full of paradoxes. She was classically

trained, but rebelled against the art establishment and created her own “independent" artistic style. She

was known for her exquisite portraits of mothers and children, reminiscent of Madonna and Child

Renaissance paintings, but she never married and never experienced motherhood. Cassatt is also

considered to be the impressionist printmaker par excellence and was instrumental in bringing

traditional and impressionist art collections to American museums. A staunch feminist, Cassatt

advocated for women’s rights. We will delve into Mary’s interesting life story and her extraordinary

artistic achievements. “I have touched with a sense of art some people - they felt the love and the life.

Can you offer me anything to compare to that joy for an artist?" Mary Cassatt.

Deacon King Kong is part mystery story, part crime novel and part urban farce. At its rollicking heart is a fumbling, cranky church deacon who in 1969 inexplicably shoots and wounds a local drug dealer. McBride, a National Book Award winner, “conducts his antic symphony with deep feeling, never losing sight of the suffering and inequity within the merriment.” The novel is an Oprah’s Book Club Pick and a Top 10 selection of The New York Times and Time magazine. April 7 - Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell “An exceptional historical novel” according to The New Yorker, Hamnet is the story of how the death of Shakespeare’s 11-year-old son Hamnet may have shaped his play “Hamlet.” “A luminous portrait of a marriage, a shattering evocation of a family ravaged by grief and loss, and a tender and unforgettable re-imagining of a boy whose life has been all but forgotten, and whose name was given to one of the most celebrated plays of all time, Hamnet is mesmerizing, seductive, impossible to put down.” Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the book was named a best book of the year by The New York Times and the New York Public Library. May 5 - Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family by Robert Kolker Hidden Valley Road is a nonfiction medical mystery story of how schizophrenia ravaged six members of the Galvin family. Kolker’s book “is a feat of narrative journalism but also a study in empathy; he unspools the stories of the Galvin siblings with enormous compassion while tracing the scientific advances in treating the illness.” The book was an Oprah’s Book Club Pick and was named a best book of the year by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, NPR, Time, Smithsonian, and People.
