Spring 2019 REMEMBERING HARRY “If you’re from a big family, you’ve got to have long arms and bad manners!” he often said, as the oldest of six and the father of ten. Harry served as an MP in the Army in Tokyo during the Korean Conflict, but before shipping out, he married Christine Reardon, mother of his chil- dren. Their children were mostly raised in the Milford area downstate. He loved sitting quietly early on school morn- ings observing the progression of his kids getting ready for school, the teenagers picking up jeans off the laundry room floor helter skelter, didn’t matter whether the jeans were for the girls or the boys. They had no mirrors in the bathroom. He continu- ously remodeled to improve their liv- ing quarters, inventing, engineering and building, always building some- thing to create more efficiency. As a kid, he worked alongside his dad, building his first house at 15. Carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, he did it all. He and his brother Dan had their own business building basements all over the Detroit area and Oak- land County for 8 years. Sailing, canoeing and singing around the campfire with the kids was their childhood experience with him. Harry was an Irish tenor and brought tears to your eyes when he sang Danny Boy. His parents, Henry, an Irish immigrant from County Wicklow and his mother, Hulda Esther, a Finn from the U.P., found Forest Lake shortly before the lake was created in 1968. His sister Kathy and husband Dave bought a restaurant in Alger, and his sister Connie and her husband ran an auto repair shop here. Most of their family had purchased lots in our subdivision. They later sold them except for Dan’s, which Harry claimed in 1999 upon retirement. He designed and built this house where we have lived these last 11 plus years of marriage. Setting up a tent on the lot, he had the lot cleared and a foundation put in, then continued to build his house, then his carport and tool shed, then the Japanese-style tool shed, then the coral, the pagoda, the wishing well, the pergola, the teepee, the cor- ner fence, patio, walkways and walk- way lanterns. The insulated feral cat house, with the heating pad bed in- side and the raccoon-proof cat feeder with a funnel to fill when we go away are the latest! He designed the west-end pavilions and helped a host of neighbors with their building projects. Bob Hanson loved his pagoda and built one just like Harry’s. Harry went through his trial by fire mid-life and foundsobriety through the 12-step program and has been asource of wisdom and support for all who met him, starting in Milford over 36 years ago. We have sharedmany common interests since 1985 – books, movies, musicals (we saw the Phantom of the Opera in Torontoin 1991), folk music, camping, hiking, and we were oflike mind about politics and religion. We were married inNovember, 2007 and love our quiet place in the woods, cooking hot dogs over the campfire.

He met his Creator on March 29 here at home whileunder the hospice care of Compassus of West Branchfor three months. His sons and daughter were here andhe declared that his time on hospice with lung cancerhad been a blessing because it gave everyone the timeto say goodbye.

He was a strong man in every sense of the word, a greatwit who loved puns, a wise man who overcame hisaddiction, a spiritual and loving man who served andprovided comfort and support. He was 87.

We have been blessed by his life.

CHEMICAL TREATMENT FORWEEDS AND ALGAE 2019

Restorative lake Sciences will on the lake June 4 toconduct a survey of fish habitat and vegetation andsubmit their findings with maps ready for treatment. The vegetation growth is far behind this year because ofthe cold temperatures and cloud cover. RLS will becoordinating with the Nuisance Aquatic Growth con-tractor that we have used in years past.

LAKE WATER QUALITYWater Quality Sampling has begun at the lake by ourconsultant Restorative Lake Sciences. The first sam-pling was performed on April 30. The two field techni-cians sampled water and soil at seven different loca-tions around the lake for nutrients, sediment, and pollut-ants. There will be several more samplings this yearbefore RLS submits their first report based on theircollection of data.

Dr. Jennifer L. Jermalowicz-Jones,Water Resources Director Restorative Lake Sciences

Restorative Lake Sciences (RLS) was retained by theForest Lake Property Owners Association Board in thelate fall of 2018 to conduct a lake and immediatewatershed evaluation that will lead to recommenda-tions of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) whichcan be implemented to improve the water quality andhealth of Forest Lake. Lake benthic (bottom) scanswere conducted on October 16, 2018 just prior to lakedrawdown. The scans included a modernized depthcontour (bathymetric) map that shows the depth varia-tions with locations in the lake; an aquatic vegetationbiovolume map that shows the relative heights of allaquatic plants in the water column and may also beused to prioritize future weed treatment areas, and; abottom hardness map of the lake sediments whichshows the soft versus more consolidated sedimentareas on the lake bottom and may be used to prioritized

dredging sites in the near future.

Additionally, RLS has mapped the entire immediatewatershed of the lake (shown below) which was usedwith modernized GIS data information and was deter-mined to be 17,552 acres— which is approximately53.2 times the size of the lake and indicates a very largeimmediate watershed. The immediate watershed ar-eas drain directly into the lake and thus mitigation ofimpaired areas within the immediate watershed is criti-cal to reducing sediment and nutrient loads to the lake.RLS is working closely with the Association Board todelineate these areas and begin BMP implementationssuch as detention ponds and check dams, among otherpractices.

Lastly, RLS conducted a property-based erosion con-trol survey with a certified erosion control officer thatdetermined which properties have erosion issues andhow they can be mitigated. During the October 16, 2018surveys, RLS determined that erosion of the shorelinearound Forest Lake is a major issue affecting the healthof Forest Lake and must be addressed. RLS is compil-ing these property photographs along with recommendedBMP’s for each so that they can be improved over time.RLS will be making regular reports to the Board topresent to the public.
