Regional Officer’s report Michele Misgalla

We are ringing in the new at BWY London with a new committee, new programme of events, a new-look London Festival…. it’s all happening this year and I really hope you will be a part of it! We say goodbye with many thanks for all their incredibly hard work to Beena Chotai, our web admin, Katrina Heather, Vice Chair and director of the BWY London Festival for many years and Jacqueline Purnell , Regional Training Officer. I am delighted to welcome Laura Lefeuvre, the new Regional Training Officer, Katja Patel, who stays on the committee as Vice Chair, Anna Ferla who takes on the County Rep role for South London and Emelie Garrod, the new Marketing Officer. We are still looking for a new web admin, please get in touch if you can help. I look forward to meeting many of you at the many exciting IST, Open Days, Teachers Forums and Members Afternoons planned for the coming year. And don’t forget the BWY London International Day of Yoga celebration on 23 June, we had such fun last year, this year’s event is sure to be a massive success. Committee member’s report Jaz Mullings-Lambert City & North London County Rep

Greetings… Thank goodness Spring is on its way! This year we have some exciting new, experienced Yoga teachers facilitating our master classes in City and North London. Come and join Babs Lehner-Platts for Mindfulness & Yoga on Saturday 26th May 10am – 4pm. I introduced Babs to our Members afternoon in November 2016 which was fully booked and her teaching was received with a zest for more. Along with teaching Mindfulness Babs is also a psychotherapeutic counsellor, she teaches Mindfulness programmes to corporate companies and her students in and around Fleet. Our second master class is with Imani Francis-Pennant on the 14th July from 10am – 4pm; come and try something new and a different concept for Yoga, which is getting more and more popular - African and Khemetic Yoga. African Yoga is relatively new, it uses rhythmic movement to help warm the body in order to perform postures as it focuses on body and breath awareness with deep connections to the four elements and Khemetic Yoga uses a range of simple to more complex geometric shapes. It was developed by studying, translating and interpreting the commonly called hieroglyphic texts of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and the images of Yogic postures that are clearly pictured on the walls of the Khemetic temples. Looking forward to seeing you on your mats!

Committee member’s report Anna Ferla South London County rep

At the AGM in November I was delighted to be elected as the new South London Rep, with Alex Reed as a deputy rep. I am very excited to start this interesting and challenging role after having been on the London committee for two years as New Media Officer. I would also like to thank Michele Misgalla for proposing me and for the great job she has done as South London rep. I wish her all the best as a Regional Officer. Alex and I are getting our heads around the new roles and we already have some new events in the pipeline for this year. At the moment we have a first aid training course booked for the 21st April and we are planning a second one for early autumn. We are lining up tutors for a Teachers’ Forum on Mantras and voice work, and we are proposing a masterclass based on either anatomy or Feldenkrais after the success of Dan Gelblum’s event last year. Also under discussion is a gong bath! We’ll keep you posted and hope to see you soon. Namaste, Anna

This year our London Yoga Festival returns to a new venue in central London on October 13 and 14, 2018 – save the date! Our inspiring guest yogis have completely dedicated their lives to yoga and to using its ancient wisdom in order to bring significant change to the lives of others. Deepening our connection to ourselves - Meditation and the Energy System Kay Baxter BWY Module Tutor: Meditation & Personal Development

‘Being oneself’ is the ultimate ease of being that many people long for. It is the affinity with a ‘naturalness’ whereby we are easy and fluid in our connection and responsiveness to ourselves, to others and to all that presents in our lives. Many people have lost connection with this naturalness and are often undermined by their own unhelpful thought patterns, judgement and criticism. These patterns can be firmly entrenched and pervasive and have an enormously destructive effect on lives, determining the way we feel; our moods and states, our decisions and relationships. At the same time great quantities of our energy are wastefully used. These mental patterns often operate below the threshold of awareness, presenting as an insidious background hum and

flavour, like wallpaper or supermarket music. Meditation and practices that focus on the body and the breath in stillness, provide a wonderful container through which we can begin to get to know ourselves better, including the patterns that operate to sabotage our best intentions and potential. We begin a process of getting to know our minds, through the awakening and application of witness consciousness; the ‘watcher’ who ‘sees’. And in this awakening and ‘seeing’ we are no longer lost in the story. As we practice over time, this deeper witness aspect is strengthened. We are no longer a puppet to the ‘established order’, but rather are more and more able to see clearly.

At the same time we develop our ‘feeling’ connection; our capacity to feel deeply into our body where we find all the tensions, contraction and restrictions that have built up in our bodies. In the process we become more fully embodied. And the hold of the unproductive, unhelpful mind is loosened. This aspect of mind is a foreign installation that has ousted us away from our naturalness through unhelpful early experience. These include child rearing and educational practices, where criticism, judgement and ensuing punishments and/or humiliation have driven awareness and attention away from the body. There ensued a flight into the mind and away from the intolerable discomfort of ‘being’ in the body, under such circumstances. A mind state busily trying to work it all out, in an attempt to protect oneself and find ways of being that would not deliver these torturous consequences. Unfortunately in the midst of ongoing unhelpful societal systems and practices, that are essentially inhospitable to humanity, we are delivered further away from our essential connectedness and naturalness of being. And the mind through an absorption of experience and

the general milieu, takes on the judgement, condemnation and tormenting that drove us out of connection in the first place. These have become internalized and often function below consciousness. It is an insidious chipping away that wears down and undermines, leaving in its wake vulnerability and unsureness of self. It is not surprising that mental illness (which broadly speaking affects the vast majority in one way or another) and prescription/street drugs to control these, have reached epidemic proportions. A scourge stretching through all classes and categories of peoples, and at the root of all dysfunction. There is a way back; it is a process, it is a practice, it takes time, but little by little we begin to reclaim our true nature and towards a greater natural ease of being. It is finding and practising ways of going within, in order to switch on a light. It is a journey towards ‘sufficient’ stillness such that we can begin to ‘see’ and ‘feel’ in a fuller way. It is the work of building a strong self. It is the work of life. Kay’s BWY module on Meditation & Personal Development starts next January – see course listings on page 20.

Obituary: Sarah Mackintosh DCT Messages from her students

Sarah Mackintosh’s Celebration of Life party brought together people from all walks of life and it became very apparent that she was so many things to so many people. Some of her yoga students offered to share their experiences and insights into what Sarah meant to them, and what it means to be ‘a very special yoga teacher’. “For 25 years Sarah WAS my Wednesday evening and I would rarely miss a class. It was so important to me as she supported me through my evolving and ever more challenging teaching career, a role that not many yoga teachers would take on. She encouraged me to have faith in my abilities when I doubted myself, and my painful back and stiff joints gradually disappeared. She was able to nourish and support both the mind and the body for her students, a very rare quality. There were times of quiet meditation in class which I carry with me when rushing about my daily life, and enabled me to approach difficult situations from a different viewpoint and gave me the strength and wisdom to deal with them.” Alison Squire “Sarah’s Wednesday evening yoga classes were special in so many different ways - Sarah went through a phase of sharing her vast knowledge of the Yoga Sutras through readings at the end of class. As a scholar, she could interpret the Sanskrit and meanings with such clarity and simplicity that it gave me a genuine understanding and a longing to

learn more. To join one of Sarah’s classes, you were immediately invited into a group of caring and supportive people who became friends. Sarah had such a broad and intellectual understanding of most things that she could drop into conversation anything that was in some way relevant, helpful and supportive to an individual’s life or in the world in general.” Celeste Michael “I first met Sarah at a class in Crouch End around 21 years ago. Sarah taught me so much, not least to leave my competitive edge at the door. I’d come from a classical ballet background which left me feeling inferior in some aspect, not strong enough, not high enough, not loose enough. A new quiet respect for my body grew whilst Sarah’s translations of Patanjali opened my mind. Infused through these classes were Sarah’s brilliant observations, wisdom and vast knowledge from painting and Latin names for plants to classical poetry and very silly rhymes! I had hoped to continue training with her but sadly her mother became ill with dementia and Sarah took over her care. Later when my own mother developed the same disease, Sarah held my hand through some of the worst. She shared in the joys of the birth of my two children and even encouraged me to bring my son to class where he wriggled around the room. Sarah opened my life and heart to yoga and she will forever remain in my heart with grateful thanks” Sarah Stone

Yoga Therapy: A Sensitive & Intuitive Approach Judy Hirsh Sampath BWY Module Tutor: Yoga Therapy

“I am not a doctor nor do I have a physical therapy license. I treat the delusion of not knowing your Self and how to find your way past pain and suffering. I guide you, not treat you” Mukunda Stiles, Yoga Therapist It was on my first day teaching yoga in an NHS mental health unit 15 years ago that I realized I was ill-equipped, lacked knowledge, and had issues around self-confidence. My lesson plan started with the students lying in a semi-supine position. This was partly to give them time to settle, relax and feel safe before we started some warm ups and move into asana, and it also gave me a way to settle myself and have a few moments when they weren’t looking directly into the eyes of a nervous yoga teacher. As I entered the room, one woman was huddled in a corner crying helplessly, another was standing and fidgeting with eyes wide open, one young man was sitting on the floor with a very curved spine and very long hair so I couldn’t even see a face – a lot of self-doubt and lack surfaced in me. Somehow I got through the class – that’s another story but needless to say, the lesson plan was dropped and I had to use intuition to create some yoga and hold a safe space. As I walked across to the Forensic unit

for my next new class, I could only imagine who I would meet, and decided I definitely needed some yoga therapy training! Over the years, these two classes turned out to be the best learning I ever received, as a yoga teacher and as a human being. Since then, I have met people with mental health issues, infertility, aging, grief, loss of identity, and probably common to all - an ailing spirit. People often arrive with physical tension and pain. The body expresses mental and emotional tension through physical tension so the approach greets the body as a messenger. Tuning into direct experience is often described as ‘remembered’ or as a ‘coming home’, re-establishing deeper psychological, therapeutic universal connections. As a yoga therapist, this way of healing starts with You! Yoga Therapy is fast becoming a recognised and scientifically proven mind/body system in offering people improved physical, mental, and emotional health. With over-stretched health services, high rates of absenteeism at work due to illness, and pharmaceutical quick fixes, yoga therapy works alongside other treatments to support healing and wellness. Judy is running an IST Day in March, a foundation course in April and a BWY module in Yoga Therapy starting in April and September – see course listings on page 20.

Squatting & the pelvic floor Saturday 10 February

This day provides an introduction to review current guidelines relating to squatting in pregnancy - to explore the relevant anatomy and physiology in relation to preparation to squat - to relate the squatting position to childbirth - to understand the relationship between squatting and the action of the pelvic floor Judy Cameron Judy has practised Yoga for many years and has been teaching Pre and Postnatal Yoga since 1996. She gained her Diploma in Teaching Yoga with the British Wheel of Yoga in 1999 and has also completed a Diploma in Baby Yoga with Birthlight, and Yoga for the Special Child at The Special Yoga Centre in London. She also has a strong interest in the use of hypnosis in childbirth. Judy is a registered midwife. She runs her own classes in Yoga for Pregnancy, Birth Preparation Workshops, Postnatal and Baby Yoga. She also teaches Yoga for the Special Child to school children, and offers Birth Preparation and HypnoBirthing privately. As Director of the YogaBirth Teacher Training course and Tutor for the BWY Pregnancy and Postnatal Modules, she has a deep interest in passing on her knowledge to other teachers. She teaches courses in Scotland, the North of England and London.

Yoga as Therapy: A journey to self understanding, insight & healing Saturday 17 March

This experiential body/mind/spirit workshop invites teachers to think and plan less, and to tune in to the body’s wise domain, and trust its innate wisdom and guidance to teach from within. This powerful yet gentle approach is the gateway to healing and creates a steady foundation for yoga therapy. We will be moving the body with warm ups, asana, & pranayama, tuning into the body through mindfulness, silence, stillness, discussion. We will also explore the nervous system through restorative yoga and the power of receiving through Yoga Nidra. We will engage mindfulness within the practice specifically to notice what is held in the bodies' internal landscape and integrate the information received to take the practice from the mat and out into life.

Judy Hirsh Sampath is a BWY yoga teacher, relax & renew practitioner, and a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She is co-founder of Yoga United Education. As a yoga therapist, she takes yoga, meditation, embodied mindfulness and yoga therapy into health spas, offices, schools, mental health & fertility settings. She runs BWY foundation courses and a BWY module in Yoga Therapy.

Obituary: Nina Lewis Written by Richard Kravetz NINA LEWIS British Wheel of Yoga Dip, BWY TOPT, Member of the World Society for Clinical Yoga and Holistic Healing and author of book “All you wanted to know about Yoga but were afraid to ask” sadly passed away on 18 November 2017. Nina Lewis was a popular and experienced Yoga teacher who gave a great deal to many people during her yoga career. Nina taught classes in Bushey and North London for many years and her teaching covered all aspects of natural health through Yoga and how to apply it to everyday living. Nina attended the Yoga for Peace conference held in Israel in the early nineties which featured luminaries such as the late Indra Devi. T.K. Desikachar and Howard Kent . Her vast experience and vibrant personality inspired many students. My own experience was attending her classes in the nineties at Bounds Green Scout Park, where she ran up to 5 classes, many of which were referrals from the local doctor’s surgery. Her classes included many mature yogis including one couple in their eighties who credited their longevity to her teachings.

With WENDY HARING Following on from the study of Chapters One and Two, this is a dedicated course on selected themes from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras Chapter Three. The afternoon will start with chanting of the selected sutras of the day – meanings, theory and discussion – followed by a moving meditation of
