SPRING 2018 PROCEDURE FOR PREREGISTRATION Academic advising and preregistration for the Spring Semester 2018 will be held on Oct. 17-Nov 17. All students who expect to continue at Westminster College during the Spring 2018 should make an appointment to see their advisor during this time. PREREGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS: All returning students should meet with their advisor the week prior to the date that computer access is turned on (see schedule below). The student and academic advisor will prepare a tentative class schedule that will be entered by the student when access available. Further detailed student instructions regarding the registration process will be available on MYWC. Students will not be granted access to registration during their designation registration period until they have completed the Emergency Contact Information on MYWC. DO NOT wait until your registration access time to complete this information. If you have not completed the emergency contact information prior to your access time, you will be required to complete the information before you can enter your classes, delaying your registration. Instructions for entering the Emergency Contact Information will be sent to all students before preregistration access via e-mail. 1. Students may enter their courses beginning at 11:00 a.m. on the day of their designated

registration access, based on classification, as noted above. Detailed instructions for student web (MYWC) preregistration will be available on MYWC. Make certain to check for holds on your account prior to your preregistration access time.

2. Please check to make certain that you have all required prerequisites before entering your

classes. You will not be permitted to register for courses in which you have not completed the required prerequisite. Permission of the instructor for a required prereq must be submitted as a course authorization on MYWC. A list of required prerequisites will be sent to all students and advisors prior to preregistration.

3. During the preregistration period, enrollment figures are available on the WEB module. Students will not be permitted to enroll in closed classes unless they submit a request to the professor to be added to the waitlist and the professor approves a course authorization.

4. Independent Study courses (398) and Internships (399) are available in most departments.

Students who intend to enroll for an Independent Study or Internship will need the prior permission of the supervising instructor and will need to complete the appropriate form.

5. All courses with special course fees will be noted on MYWC with a link to the Westminster

website. Fees for Private Music Lessons will be prorated if the student drops before census date but must be paid in full if the student drops or withdraws after census date. All other special course fees must be paid in full if the student attends class after census date.

WRITING INTENSIVE COURSES

Westminster students must earn credit in two Writing Intensive courses, one of which must be upper level, to fulfill general degree requirements. (Students transferring credit in composition must take three WI courses and at least one of the courses must be upper-level.) Some professors may offer a course as “Writing Intensive Option” in order to allow a limited number of students to take the course for Writing Intensive credit; it is the student's responsibility to get permission from the instructor of a Writing Intensive option course and to submit the proper form to the Registrar's Office in order to receive Writing Intensive credit. Writing Intensive courses will be designated with “WI” and Writing Intensive Option courses will be designated with “WIO” in parenthesis after the title of the class. ACCOUNTING, BUSINESS, ECONOMICS, FINANCE BUS200 A – Introduction to Sports & Entertainment Management: The course introduces students to various sports and entertainment industry subjects. The intent of the course is to introduce the following subjects and generate interest and understanding in a continued study of the S&E industries—Introductory subjects include sports & entertainment economics, finance, marketing, sponsorship, venue and event management, governance and law. (No prerequisites required). BUS300 A – Booking & Presenting Live Entertainment: This course focuses on the process of planning live and performing arts programs, series and seasons, selecting facilities, scheduling and budgeting, booking, negotiating contracts, marketing, pro forma settlements and professional ethics. Understanding the perspective of both venues and the performers is key. Students will produce a project. Both profit-making and non-profit performance sectors are covered. Prerequisites: Junior Standing and completion of ACC 215, ACC216, BUS 200A, BUS 200, BUS 250, FIN 318 ECN400 A – Senior Capstone/Honors Capstone: In this course, students will learn how to apply course material learned in other economics courses. The course will probably begin with a review of intermediate macroeconomics, price theory, and econometrics. For the remainder of the course, each student will pursue a research topic of his/her choosing. The topic may be interdisciplinary. The student will work with the economics department staff and one faculty member from outside the department if they choose an interdisciplinary subject. Students will present and discuss their research results in class throughout the semester. Finally, each student will write a paper describing the results of their research. We will ask how literature represents the place of humans in ecological systems and their impact on those systems, particularly whether literature is able to evoke and understand ecological complexity and to justly imagine human responsibilities to other humans and to the more-than-human. Crucial to this line of questioning will be our discussion of environmental justice, or the connection between human oppression and exploitation of the more-than-human. The course will offer a historical overview of American environmental literature—nonfiction, fiction, and poetry—by authors including H.D. Thoreau, Rachel Carson, bell hooks, Leslie Marmon Silko, Sarah Orne Jewett, W.S. Merwin, Enrique Salmon, Camille Dungy, Arthur Sze, and many others—which we will examine through the critical lenses of environmental ethics, aesthetics, and ontology. ENG380 A – Introduction to Digital Humanities: Digital tools such as archives, data mining, data visualizations, and games are changing how students and scholars approach the study of the humanities. In this course, we will use digital tools to facilitate our own interpretation and research, with a particular focus on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (celebrating its two-hundredth birthday in 2018!) and its enduring influence on popular culture. No technical proficiency is assumed--you only need to be willing to learn. Our projects will include many hands-on (and, I hope, fun) opportunities to make things (networks, maps, timelines, and so on) in addition to the analytical writing assignments you are familiar with from other English courses. SOC300 A – Medical Sociology: This course will examine social aspects of health and illness, as well as health care systems in the U.S. and abroad. In doing so, it explores issues including how race, class, and gender affect the diagnosis and treatment of patients, the consequences of defining an increasing number of social problems and natural processes as illnesses, and the causes of the current healthcare crisis and how it can be resolved. Prerequisite: SCA 111, SOC 111, SCA 115 or ANT 115 SPANISH SPA200 A – Bolivia Trip Orientation: Students will spend three weeks in La Paz, one of Bolivia's two capitals in the Andes Mountains. Students will experience full immersion in South American culture with intensive Spanish language study and by living and interacting with host families. Evenings and weekends will be spent in tourism and educational activities in the surrounding regions of Bolivia. The guided tours will include visits to geographical landmarks such as Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, and to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world). Students will also experience the greatness of prehispanic culture with a visit to Tiwanaku (Ruins of an ancient prehispanic city) and to the most important historical landmarks in la Paz and other cities in Bolivia. Even though the course will be particularly appealing to Spanish students, this course is designed for students at any level of Spanish (from elementary to advanced) interested in expanding their global vision and knowledge about other cultures.

In preparation for summer study abroad in Bolivia, this class will introduce you to the culture and history of this country. It will offer insight into various aspects of Bolivian and Latin American culture, including art, literature, gastronomy, and traditions. It will also provide students with a view into defining moments in history and contemporary politics. Students will
