In Memoriam
Bernard A. Green Ph.D., age 77, of Ferndale, Michigan died June 23,
2015 at his home in Ferndale. Dr. Green was born January 2, 1938 in
Brooklyn, New York. He was a graduate of New York City College, and
went on to complete his Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of
Michigan. Dr. Green joined the faculty at the University of Detroit in
1973, where he was fiercely supportive of his students and teaching,
while equally energetic about the field of Psychology. He spent nearly 35
years as a professor at UDM, during most of which he served as Director
of the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. He spearheaded the
APA accreditation process for the Ph.D. program, which was achieved in
1988. He was highly regarded as a teacher and psychotherapist by the
psychological community of Metro Detroit. He was a strong advocate for
the Ph.D. program during his years as DCT, and he also provided strong
support and encouragement to those who succeeded him. Peggy Stack,
Ph.D. noted, “I will always treasure the ‘epic poem’ on the tenure
process, that he wrote for Drs. McCown and myself as we reached that
milestone.” He retired in 2006. Dr. Green was also a passionate poet who
wrote 3 volumes of poetry and short stories. He was a loving father and
husband, those who knew him will never forget his kindness, wit, and
sense of humor. Dr. Green is survived by his children, Jacob (Ashe)
Green, Katherine (Karyn) Green, his granddaughter Alice Green, and his
sister Beverly (Paul) Caldwell.
Jesse Bell, Ph.D., supervisor at the University of Detroit Mercy
Psychology Clinic and former Internship Director of University
Psychiatric Services-Jefferson Ave of Wayne State University School of
Medicine, died suddenly on May 31, 2015. He was 61 yrs. old. Dr. Bell
was a native of Detroit, graduated from Cass Technical High School and
received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Michigan University. He
received his Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Columbia University in
New York. He returned to Detroit in 1980 and he served on the staff of
Lafayette Clinic, where he saw patients, engaged in research and trained
and supervised psychology interns until the closure of Lafayette Clinic in
1993. Subsequently, he became director of the APA accredited UPC-
Jefferson predoctoral internship in Clinical Psychology. Cheryl Munday,
Ph.D. noted, “Jesse Bell was a dedicated psychologist who touched the
lives of many during his professional career. As a hospital staff
psychologist, he was a staunch advocate for humane and quality care
during a time when public, hospital-based services were sharply curtailed
and when Lafayette Clinic was closed. As a fellow internship director, he
was a generous and supportive colleague. As a Psychology Clinic
supervisor, he was a kind, highly effective teacher whose students felt
valued and confident about his commitment to their development. And
as I came to learn recently, he was a devoted family man with deep
religious faith. No matter the occasion, no matter the task at hand, he
was optimistic, yet pragmatic, shrewdly diplomatic and always someone
I just enjoyed being around. He will be sorely missed.” Dr. Bell is
survived by his wife, Brenda and two daughters Marissa and Allison.

Right: Fifth year doctoral
student Tyler Boonstra, MA,

Tyler also provided lectures to
the Summer Enrichment
Program Students on relaxation

interviewing.
The Doctoral Program was again affiliated with a grant
from the Health Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA) as part of the Health Career Opportunities
Program (HCOP) awarded to the UDM Dental School
to provide an educational experience for economically
and educationally disadvantaged undergraduates. The
purpose of the grant was to assist these students to
develop skills to apply for and be accepted into dental
school. Educational experiences included multi-
professional exposure.
This year the program facilitated the inter-professional
educational workshop for the dental students. The
program worked with Deirdre Young, DDS to put
together the modules for the workshop. The modules
covered the importance of inter-professional education
and multi-disciplinary work in healthcare settings. The
workshop addressed concepts related to experiences of
anxiety and its causes, shame in relation to self
perceptions of personal appearance, differences in the
experiences of patients across the age spectrum, and the
importance of recognizing diversity in the practice
setting.
Doctoral students served as group facilitators to assist
dental students engage in exercises related to the
concepts being taught in the workshop. Pre-dental
Students discussed hypothetical cases that had
significant psychological dimensions to find ways of
maximizing their work with patients. The inter-
professional education workshop was one component
of their Summer Enrichment Program. In 2014, the
doctoral program partnered with the School of
Dentistry to include a program for psychology
undergraduates as well. We anticipate future
collaborations based upon our successful work together
these last two years.
