Brilliant GreenThe Surprising History and Science of Plant Intelligence

Are plants intelligent? Can they solve problems, communicate, and navigate their surroundings? For centuries, philosophers and scientists have argued that plants are unthinking and inert—yet discoveries over the past fifty years have challenged this idea, shedding new light on the complex interior lives of plants.

In Brilliant Green, leading scientist Stefano Mancuso presents a new paradigm in our understanding of the vegetal world. He argues that plants process information, sleep, remember, and signal to one another—showing that, far from passive machines, plants are intelligent and aware. Part botany lesson, part manifesto, Brilliant Green is an engaging and passionate examination of the inner workings of the plant kingdom.

An intriguing and entertaining exploration of plant neurobiology

Tactical Urbanism

Short-term, community-based projects—from pop-up parks to open streets initiatives—have become a powerful and adaptable new tool of urban activists, planners, and policy-makers seeking to drive lasting improvements in their cities and beyond. These quick, often low-cost, and creative projects are the essence of the Tactical Urbanism movement. Whether creating vibrant plazas seemingly overnight or re-imagining parking spaces as neighborhood gathering places, they offer a way to gain public and government support for investing in permanent projects, inspiring residents and civic leaders to experience and shape urban spaces in a new way.

In Tactical Urbanism, Mike Lydon and Anthony Garcia provide background on the movement they helped found and offer case studies and a toolkit for conceiving, planning, and carrying out projects. Tactical Urbanism promises to be the foundational guide for urban transformation.

Conservation for CitiesHow to Plan & Build Natural Infrastructure

It’s time to think differently about cities and nature. More people than ever live in urban areas, and all of this growth, along with challenges of adapting to climate change, will require a new approach to infrastructure in order to create livable urban places. With Conservation for Cities, Robert McDonald offers a comprehensive framework for maintaining and strengthening the supporting bonds between cities and nature through innovative infrastructure projects. After presenting a broad approach to incorporating natural infrastructure priorities into urban planning, he focuses each following chapter on a specific ecosystem service. He describes a wide variety of benefits, and helps practitioners answer fundamental questions about how to use natural infrastructure to create communities that are more resilient and livable.

State of the World 2015Confronting Hidden Threats to Sustainability

We think we understand environmental damage: pollution, water scarcity, a warming world. But these problems are just the tip of the iceberg. Deeper issues include food insecurity, financial assets drained of value by environmental damage, and a rapid rise in diseases of animal origin. These and other problems are among the underreported consequences of an unsustainable global system.

In State of the World 2015, the flagship publication of The Worldwatch Institute, experts explore hidden threats to sustainability and how to address them. Eight key issues are addressed in depth, along with the central question of how we can develop resilience to these and other shocks. With the latest edition of State of The World, the authorities at Worldwatch bring to light challenges we can no longer afford to ignore.

Artful Rainwater DesignCreative Ways to Manage Stormwater

The go-to resource for creatively designing stormwater systems

Stormwater management as art? Absolutely. Rain is a resource that should be valued and celebrated, not merely treated as a problem—and yet, traditional stormwater treatment methods often range from ugly to forgettable. Artful Rainwater Design shows that it’s possible to effectively manage runoff while also creating inviting, attractive landscapes.

This beautifully illustrated, comprehensive guide explains how to design practical and appealing spaces that treat on-site stormwater management as an opportunity to enhance site design. Artful Rainwater Design is a must-have resource for landscape architects, urban designers, civil engineers, and architects looking to create landscapes that celebrate rain for the life-giving resource it is—and contribute to more sustainable, healthy, and even fun, built environments.

Dr. Stuart Echols is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Pennsylvania State University. He teaches courses in stormwater management, urban design, land development, environmental site construction methods, design research methods, land-use assessment and design implementation. Echols is a registered landscape architect who has practiced in Texas, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Eliza Pennypacker has been a faculty member in Pennsylvania State University's Department of Landscape Architecture since 1982. She has taught a wide range of courses, including the History of Landscape Architecture, First-Year Seminar, and all levels of design studio. Pennypacker's creative work has also included the winning entry to the national design competition for a Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. and design and curation of an award-winning, traveling interpretive exhibition and catalog titled Abstracting the Landscape: The Artistry of Landscape Architect A. Jonathan Barnett and Larry Beasley

Ecodesign for Cities and Suburbs

Jonathan Barnett and Larry Beasley demonstrate that a sustainable built and natural environment can be achieved through ecodesign, which integrates the practice of planning and urban design with environmental conservation, through business practices, programs, and regulations already in use in most communities. Ecodesign helps adapt the design of our built environment to both a changing climate and a rapidly growing world, creating more desirable places in the process.

In six illustrated chapters, the authors share ecodesign concepts and illustrate how to implement them. They provide an array of solutions, including the importance of conserving natural systems while also adapting to climate change; minimizing highway and airport congestion through more compact development and increased convenience of walking, cycling, and mass transit; creating an inviting and environmentally responsible public realm out of parks, streets, and forgotten spaces; and crafting regulations to fulfill consumer preferences and incentivize preferred practices.

Parking Management for Smart Growth

Strategic parking management in an era of tighter parking supplies

Land Use PlanningJune 2015

Hardcover: $80.00Paper: $40.00E-Book: $39.99

In the last 50 years, parking management has grown from a minor aspect of local policy and regulation to a central position in the provision of transportation access. The higher densities, shrinking land supplies, environmental and social concerns, and alternative transportation modes of Smart Growth demand a different approach—actively managed parking.

This book offers a set of tools and a method for strategic parking management, allowing communities to better utilize space and avoid overbuilding. Willson explores new opportunities for making the most of every parking space in a sharing economy, and taking advantage of new digital parking tools to increase user interaction and satisfaction. Examples demonstrate successful approaches from Pasadena, CA, to London. At its essence, the book provides a path forward for communities in a new era.

Wild By DesignStrategies for Creating Life-Enhancing Landscapes

Can nature—in all its unruly wildness—be an integral part of creative landscape design? In her beautifully illustrated book, Wild by Design, award-winning designer Margie Ruddick stretches the boundaries of landscape design, offering readers a set of principles for a more creative and intuitive approach to sustainable landscapes—one that looks beyond the rules often imposed by both landscaping convention and sustainability checklists.

Wild by Design defines and explains the five fundamental strategies Ruddick employs, often in combination, to give life, beauty, and meaning to landscapes: reinvention, restoration, conservation, regeneration, and expression. Drawing on her own projects, from New York City to Chengdu, China, she offers guidance on creating beautiful, healthy landscapes that successfully reconnect people with larger natural systems.

Renowned sustainable landscape designer shares innovative ideas

For over 20 years, Margie Ruddick has been recognized for her pioneering work in landscape design. Winner of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in landscape architecture, Ruddick has crafted an innovative approach to design that brings together aspects of the landscape that seem to contrast—wild and urban, formally ordered and free—with attention to the messy margins where life happens. She has designed high-profile projects including New York City's Queens Plaza, the Urban Garden Room at One Bryant Park, Shillim Institute and Retreat in India’s Western Ghats, and the Living Water Park in Chengdu, China. Elle Décor named Ruddick one of five landscape designers “who are reshaping our world” and Dwell identified her as a “Landscape Design Icon.” Ruddick has taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, Yale, Princeton, Parsons School of Design, and more. She is principal of Margie Ruddick Landscape.

The Science of Open SpacesTheory and Practice for Conserving Large, Complex Systems

Since the days of the American Frontier, our management policies have promoted a one-size-fits-all mentality for large, complex landscapes. Landscape ecologist Charles Curtin argues that instead we need a science-based approach that accounts for the dynamic nature of complex systems and gives local stakeholders a say in their futures.

The Science of Open Spaces proposes that we return to “first principles”—fundamental physical laws of the universe—and think about complex systems from the ground up. Curtin walks us through foundational concepts of thermodynamics, ecology, sociology, and resilience theory, applying them to real-world examples from years spent designing large-scale, place-based collaborative research programs in the United States and around the world.

"First principles" can save our open spaces

Charles G. Curtin is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Policy, University of Montana, Missoula, where he will be developing programs for the Practitioners Network for Large Landscape Conservation. He is also Interim Director of the Mora Watershed Alliance in Mora, New Mexico, where he helped develop a landscape-level conservation program in the 1-million-acre Mora Watershed in northwestern New Mexico. He was previously the director of the Resilience Design Group in the Department of Environmental Studies, Antioch University New England, in Keene, New Hampshire.

The End of Automobile DependenceHow Cities are Moving Beyond Car-Based Planning

Planning less car-centric cities

In The End of Automobile Dependence, Newman and Kenworthy look at how we can accelerate a planning approach to design urban transportation systems that can function reliably and conveniently with alternative modes. They show how the automoblie can play a reduced and more manageable role. The authors examine the rise and fall of automobile dependence using updated data on 44 global cities to better understand how to facilitate and guide cities toward sustainable outcomes.

This is the final volume in a trilogy by Newman and Kenworthy on automobile dependence (Cities and Automobile Dependence in 1989 and Sustainability and Cities: Overcoming Automobile Dependence in 1999). Like all good trilogies this one shows the rise of an empire, in this case that of the automobile, the peak of its power, and its ultimate decline.

Peter Newman is Professor of Sustainability at the Curtin University Sustainability Institute (CUSP) in Australia. He is a lead author for Transport on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and was awarded an Order of Australia for his contributions to urban design and sustainable transport.

Jeffrey Kenworthy is Professor in Sustainable Cities in CUSP at Curtin University and Guest Professor at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

Shopping for WaterHow the Market Can Mitigate Water Shortages in the

American West

The American West has a long tradition of conflict over water. But after 15 years of drought across the region, it is no longer simply a conflict—it is a crisis. In the face of unprecedented declines in reservoir storage and groundwater reserves throughout the West, Shopping for Water focuses on a set of policies that could contribute to a lasting solution: using market forces to facilitate the movement of water resources and to mitigate the risk of water shortages.

Shopping for Water begins by reviewing key dimensions of this problem: the challenges of population and economic growth, the environmental stresses from overuse of common water resources, the risk of increasing water supply volatility, and the historical disjunction between rural and urban residents over water consumption and pricing. The authors outline five proposals to encourage the broader establishment and use of market mechanisms that can incentivize water resource reallocation. Each proposal offers a means of building resilience into our water management systems.
