The town of Vienna, along with many

waterfront communities that reside around

the Chesapeake Bay, face the inevitable

challenge of addressing sea level rise and

its impending effects on residents who have

made their living in close proximity to the

bay.

The Green Build Interpretive Center seeks to

accomplish two goals in conjunction with

each other: slow the movement of water

toward the town of Vienna and serve as a

medium for activities that will unite the

community in a common goal. The result is

a building complex that encourages

residents of Vienna to volunteer their time

and effort to strengthening a living, riparian

buffer which will absorb water and slow its

movement inland, offering a memorable

opportunity for the community to take the

future into their own hands.

+project goal: restore natural habitats and

ecosystems along the shoreline

+building acts as a catalyst for developing

the environment

+moving building components respond to

the growth of vegetation initiated by

community

+passage of time and forces of nature

shape the building’s siting & design

+memory is incorporated by the marking

of the landscape where moving building

components are grounded

+ritual is established as a way to tie the

community together and to the site

+local, recyclable, and renewable materials

to reflect character of the building and its

goals for the community

+ease of construction and simplicity of

structure aim to ease the necessary

replacement of worn building components

+symbiotic relationship between community

and natural environment

+restoring and augmenting past, thriving

natural ecosystems

+open interpretation of building functions

permits it to last for many generations, in

whatever way it is most useful

[ s u s t a i n a b i l i t y ]

+program spaces are not explicitly defined

+activities in the building prone to change

over time

+building’s service to the community may

evolve over time

+moving building components conveys a

readiness to move

+modest physical presence on the wetlands

+built on high ground for long term safety

from sea level rise

+minimal foot print using stilt construction

reducing building impact

+frames the landscape as focus of the site
