Party applesThe Gourmet Apple Co. is a fun new

business offering parents a cheaper, healthier but just-as-fun alternative to the traditional party bag. ‘We hand-make delicious toffee and chocolate apples with a wide range of toppings to suit any type of party. Gala apples are chosen for their size and sweetness. They are then dipped in rich caramel followed by Belgian chocolate and finally rolled in some yummy toppings such as jelly beans, gummy bears or fruit flakes. The apples are then wrapped, tied up with a bow and a personalised label’ explains owner and apple artist Julia Pollard. Who needs a bag full of plastic toys & sweets? He said on his appointment:“I am delighted to be taking up the Headship at such an exciting time in the school’s development. Easter with the Play Rangers! Over the Easter Holidays, The Play Rangers will be encouraging kids to follow their

own ideas and imagination. Activities will include den-building, painting, cooking on a fire, climbing trees, building tyre swings, getting very muddy and much more. The sessions will take place mainly outdoors so parents are advised to dress their

kids appropriately! Sessions are suitable for all ages, however, anyone under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Events run from Monday 2nd to Friday 13th of April and are located at Ecton Brook Lake, Abington Park and the Racecourse. See our events calendar in this issue for specific times and dates. Call the Nothampton Borough Council Play Development Team on: 01604 838049 for further info.

Muddy Boots just got bigger...Based in Walgrave village, Muddy Boots has replaced its

playgroup format of the previous 15 years with a pre-school structure. Parents in and around the village of Walgrave are thrilled that both morning and afternoon sessions are now running from Monday to Friday.Understandably, with such a great setting and an excellent team of staff, there is a waiting list for morning sessions and limited availability for afternoons but the transition of some of the older children to primary school in September will create some capacity on a ‘first come first served’ basis - so all is not lost! Along with an extremely positive Ofsted inspection, with several areas rated as Outstanding in a Good report, investment in new computers and software for the children has played a major role in the expansion process. However, parents and children agree that the very best development is the large outdoor ‘play’ area, providing space for creativity, engagement and, above all, enjoyment. Older children from the adjacent primary school share this facility, and they’re keen to interact with the pres-school children, sharing their knowledge on the environment, horticulture and the natural world. With relationships forming across different age ranges, the transition to primary school for Muddy Boots ‘graduates’ is much easier. And as if all this was not enough, the on-site “Crack-a-Jacks” childcare facility can support busy and working parents pre-school from 8am and in the afternoons until 6pm. Email [email protected] or call 01604 781838 to arrange a visit.

Holidaying with Children

a pre-dominantly adult resort is super stressful!DO choose self-catering accommodation. You’ll have more space, separate bedrooms and cooking facilities for preparing meals you know your children will eat at a time when they want to eat. If you prefer to eat out you can still do that of course but at least you have both options.DO make sure there are plenty of things for children to do. If you go somewhere too remote you’ll find you’re spending all your time entertaining the children which can be exhausting. Theme parks and farms are great but activities needn’t cost a fortune. Free activities such as a beach or park can be just as much fun.DO pick a destination that has something for the adults too. Entertaining the children and

With spring just around the corner it’s around this time of year that most of

us start thinking about our summer holiday and where we’d like to take the family. The holidays we used to enjoy before we had children are often no longer possible – sunbathing on the beach with a book, sampling the local cuisine and night life, touring the sights on foot – whatever ‘your thing’ was, chances are it’s completely impractical with children in tow. Holidaying with children is a whole different ball game but with careful planning, and a willingness to adapt, holidays can be just as enjoyable and relaxing as they used to be. In fact you’ll probably find holidays are suddenly a lot more fun… Tips for choosing your holiday:DO book a family friendly resort or campsite. Trying to entertain and control children at

Part 1: Choosing your Family Holiday

Self-Catering in France…

“We like to book self catering holiday cottages. We’ve tried the UK and abroad and French gîtes with pools are the ones that have ticked all the boxes for us so far. We go away with another family who have similar aged children so there is ready made entertainment for all of us! We tend to go for country style houses with a pool and garden for the kids to run around. The gites we have found have lovely features: big kitchens and dining areas, a BBQ and good outdoor dining space, plenty of bathrooms and good sized bedrooms that work for the dynamics of the families. We like to be in a village location but not too far from local shops and other amenities such as a lake or beach. We find this provides almost everything the kids need to have a good time and of course they have each other! The last holiday was with three families, 7 children in total, so never a dull moment!”Advantages:

• Generally relaxing • You can go at your own pace and eat and drink what and when you like • You can be flex-ible with travel arrangements choosing to fly or drive • More chance of good weather in France • Experiencing a different culture and cuisine

Disadvantages:• Cooking and shopping for food is a chore but can be shared amongst the group • It can be difficult to find accom-modation to suit everyone • How safe the houses are for young children can be a worry and you never really know until you get there. The good thing is that French houses always have to have gates to their pools • If the weather isn’t good entertaining the children can be tricky!

ensuring they have a good time is crucial but it’s your holiday too so make sure there is also something for you, be it sights to see, a spa, golf course, evening entertainment or whatever you enjoy.DON’T pick anywhere super hot. Keeping children well protected in the sun can be difficult and hence stressful so pick somewhere sunny and warm rather than roasting hot. UV sun suits are a great idea.DO holiday with another family. Holidaying with friends who also have children can really add to the fun. The children have other children to play with and you can still have a social life in the evenings once the children are in bed enjoying your friends’ company or taking it in turns to babysit for each other. DO take the grandparents! An extra pair of hands (or two) can be invaluable, particularly on holiday. Grandparents love spending time with the grandchildren and most would be delighted to be invited along. They may even babysit once or twice for you allowing you to have a night out!

DO pick a beach holiday rather than a pool. With very young children a beach is usually safer and more relaxing than lounging around a pool. There’s no danger of the children falling in the pool if you’re momentarily distracted, and the sand is great for entertaining children - hours of fun building sandcastles together! Once they’re bored with the sand paddle in the sea and jump waves together.DON’T give up breastfeeding! If you’re still breastfeeding your baby don’t give up before the holiday. Breastfeeding is so much easier if going abroad – no need to worry about sterilising, water purity, bottle warming etc.DO pick somewhere with washing facilities. Although you don’t really want to be doing laundry on your holiday it can make things easier – you won’t need to pack as much or worry about your children keeping their clothes cleanDO go in school term time if you can. It will be a whole lot cheaper and far less busy.

Activity Heaven at Center Parcs…

“We have been to Center Parcs in England for the past 4 years, trying a couple of the different sites - Longleat Forest and Elveden Forest. Each site is a self-contained village with everything you need for a family holiday. There’s a choice of accommodation from a simple basic apartment to a tree house complete with hot tub and games rooms. We usually stay in a Woodland Lodge. It has everything you need for day to day living, plenty of space, modern and airy, very comfortable. It is self catering but there are a range of restaurants and takeaways and a well stocked supermarket on site.

We like Centre Parcs because you can choose the pace of your holiday and there is a wide range of activities to entertain the children and adults including a large indoor swimming/activity pool, indoor and outdoor play areas, sports clubs and craft activities, a spa and golf course. Some activities are included in the price but others cost extra. There is also a crèche / nursery so you can have some adult time (though we haven’t used this service ourselves). ”

Advantages:• Very convenient – easy to book and prepare for • Easy to get to with short travel times • Over 200 activities to choose from, both indoor and outdoor, so children are never bored • The comfort of your own lodge with your own facilities • Family friendly restaurants on site so you don’t have to cook • Cars are not allowed on site most of the time so it’s very safe • Highchairs, cots and other equipment can be hired there or you can take your own.

Disadvantages:• You are not guaranteed the weather! • It can be expensive, especially in school holidays • The extra cost for activities can mount up when your children get older.

Glamping in Guernsey...We’ve tried all sorts of different holidays but last year we

went ‘glamping’ in Guernsey which was particularly successful as a family holiday and definitely something we’d do again. With glamping the tent and equipment is already in-situ for you so it was very easy. The tent was excellent – spacious, with two bedrooms. We had a camp bed, children had mattress on floor or a travel cot. There was a table and chairs, and basic cooking equipment with a two hob gas stove and grill. The campsite had good bathrooms (including washing machines), a small shop, play area and swimming pool. There was plenty for the children to do with lots of outdoor space on the campsite which was safe for them to play. Guernsey itself was great for young children, lots of beaches, short scenic walks, and harbours and boats. We did lots of different things including a trip to a neighboring island.

Advantages:• Great island to visit, lovely beaches • Very exciting to travel by ferry • Lovely to introduce the children to camping (in an easy manner by having tent already there, and all the equipment provided) • Children very excited by all the things in the tent and having to walk to the bathrooms to use the loo, especially at night in the dark! • Lovely to spend so much time outside • Relatively cheap!

Disadvantages:• Journey door to door was long and we did have some travel sickness on ferry (it was quite rough!) • Bad weather would be limiting for enjoying campsite activities.

Liz, Mum to Nicholas, 4, and Susannah, 18 months.

All-inclusive in the Med...Since our oldest child was just 6 months we’ve enjoyed holidaying at the First Choice holiday villages and Thomson

family clubs within a 4 hour flight zone. We try to go to an all inclusive, 4 or 5 star hotel with good food reviews from the tour operator and trip advisor. These resorts have kids clubs with lots of different activities for children. Ours enjoyed the soft play areas, crèche facilities and mini water slides when they were younger and now enjoy the resorts that have water parks attached with water shoots and lazy rivers, high ropes and go karts. We enjoy having adult time while the children are in kids club and then family time around the pool or a trip out to see the local area and experience the different culture. There’s entertainment for children and adults in the evening too which we all enjoy.

Advantages:• Very much a family resort – holidaying with like-minded families • Good value for money • Great weather • Gives parents a break from cooking and cleaning • Equipment can be hired on arrival eg push chairs, sterilisers, nappy packs etc • Staff in the crèches and kids club are qualified and thoroughly checked using British nursery checks • Great variety of foods, the children have a choice and can try different things in the one sitting • No late night noise entertainment after 11pm

Disadvantages:• Can be very crowded in peak season/school holidays • Kids Clubs can get booked up fast (best to book in advance) • Expensive at the time of booking (but cheap when you’re out there as most of it is paid for!) • Although you’re abroad all guests tend to be British • Your accommodation is limited to 1 or 2 rooms

Leaving your dog behind?

Why not treat them to a holiday too? You may have heard the expression ‘you must be barking mad’ quite often but Shirley Rands who launched her business in Northamptonshire 15 months ago, is happy to be claiming just that! Shirley, from Brackley, reports that the first 15 months of trading as a local franchisee of national pet care company Barking Mad has been a tremendous success.Barking Mad is a home from home pet care service and customers have been very quick to see the value of this solution to dog care when they need to leave their best friend to go away on holiday, business or in to hospital.Shirley said “I completely understand how dogs become a precious and important part of the family. Mine certainly is to me and it’s so rewarding to be providing a service which gives dog owners the confidence to leave their loved ones in excellent hands and have a carefree holiday. The best bit is seeing relaxed and happy owners and dogs...what more could you ask for?”.“Our customers have complete peace of mind knowing their pets are being cared for in a home environment similar to their own, whilst our host families are able to enjoy all of the benefits of owning a dog but on a part time basis. Like being a grandparent, you have all the fun before handing the grandchildren back, and Barking Mad is the canine equivalent”.

What is Water Babies?Fun, energetic and interactive classes for babies or toddlers that teach the valuable building blocks a child needs to learn to swim. What is the aim of the course? We see our classes as stages in a journey. Each level teaches new skills, as well as repeating skills which are appropriate to the age and ability of the child. The aim of the classes are to have fun, teach skills, water safety and water confidence.Talk us through a typical lesson..Each class follows a lesson plan. There is a warm up, a main activity and then a cool down; just like a normal exercise routine! The lessons are well organised and will include new skills, repeat existing skills and games/songs that help children learn. The class is teacher led and parents are encouraged to interact with their child and share the lesson together. Our teachers focus on each parent and baby helping them to achieve at their own pace and individually. What are the benefits? We teach children to swim! Introducing...The Present FairyWho/what is the Present Fairy? The Present Fairy a.k.a. Marie, is a party entertainer who delivers presents to children in a unique and magical way, without costing the earth! What is your background and why did you become the Present Fairy? As a mum myself, I often found myself stuck for new ideas when it came to arranging party entertainment for my two children. I’ve done lots of theatre and event management in the past (and I’m also a bit eccentric in general) so I thought that I must be able to put all that experience to some good use! I’m not to sure how I came up with the idea but perhaps it was all the flower fairy stories my mum read to me as a child. Most children would appreciate someone bright, sparkly and energetic at their party, to deliver a present, and to have some fun.I also realise how stressful organising a party can be, so I like to think that I take the pressure off mums and dads, by offering something a bit different, cost effective and totally fun for the kids.Talk us through a typical party visit:I would have spoken with the parents of the birthday boy/girl several times before the party so that together we can plan the right entertainment to suit the birthday star!Having met mum or dad outside (in secret) to collect the present, I then make a surprise entrance to the party, sing ‘Happy Birthday’, and deliver the present. The children and I will then do some dancing, play traditional party games, have some fun with the parachute and read stories. Finally, we go outside to release our magical wish balloons to the Fairy Queen in the sky.How do children react to you?Since I launched The Present Fairy last August, the response from the children has been totally amazing! This is the reason I love doing

it so much. Usually when I arrive, it’s a total surprise, so the children get really excited, and gather around me asking me questions like ‘where do you live?’ and ‘how did you know how to get to my party?’ Kids are transfixed by my sparkly shoes and dress, bright pink tights and most importantly...my pink hair. I’ve had lots of children tell me that I must be a real fairy because nobody ‘normal’ has pink hair! What age range does your entertainment suit?I recommend a starting age of 3. As to a maximum age…there isn’t one! I’ve had a group of teenagers up and dancing the Hokey Cokey… and the first party I did was a joint one for a lady’s husband and their two children. The husband was completely embarrassed by this bright pink fairy turning up at his garden gate singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to him...which was the whole idea! When and in what areas are you happy to take bookings?I’m available to do parties at weekends and I consider all types of venues i.e. houses or halls/community centres etc… and all areas. I do charge a mileage fee for anywhere out of a 10 mile radius from me, but I’m happy to consider all bookings on a case-by-case basis. How long does each visit last?I offer two options. 30 minutes or 1 hour. How much does a visit cost?£55 for 30 minutes and £95 for 1 hour.Contact details:Marie Burgess, tel: 07769 978238, email: [email protected]: www.thepresentfairy.co.uk

and Nursery StaffTo find the perfect match for your family call ourNorthampton Office now on 01604 760946

In these difficult times, flexible working hours and therefore flexible childcare are often needed and that is where a nanny can often be the ideal solution for many families; your child can remain feeling secure and happy in familiar surroundings, and you get the care you need at the times you want it as nannies can be adaptable to meet your specific needs. Most nannies will have trained in a relevant childcare qualification to at least NVQ level 2 or above and will have gained several years childcare experience working in a nursery setting or practicing as a childminder. Some nannies may have also gained qualifications specifically related to the nanny profession and be Ofsted registered. They may be able to work evenings, overnight, weekends and early mornings and you won’t need to miss days off work due to your child’s minor illnesses, teething etc. Any professional nanny will have a paediatric first aid certificate too. You should always ask to see evidence of their qualifications and thoroughly discuss their work history at interview. There is often a misconception that nannies are too expensive, but with an average rate of £7-£9 net per hour for an experienced nanny, it is a cost effective option as you only pay for the hours you need and can arrange mutual holidays (unless you want your nanny to come with you!) so you never pay for unused hours. In addition, if your nanny is Ofsted registered

you can claim childcare vouchers and receive the same tax breaks as any other form of childcare.Employing a nanny should be straightforward and hassle free. There are excellent support services available that will offer everything from employment law advice to organising your payroll. You may also choose to enlist the services of a nanny agency to help you find your perfect match. Any reputable agency will interview, check, vet and reference their nannies before presenting them to you. They will arrange your interviews at times to suit you and negotiate and support you through the recruitment process. They will also offer after care and support once the placement has been made. Therefore, a nanny can really be a convenient, cost effective and flexible option when considering your childcare options.

Compass Wills presents...

“I’ve been meaning to do that”I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again

I’ve been meaning to do it, now where’s that penThe house to the kids, a gift from meWriting my Will, how hard can it be

But if me and my wife both pop our clogsWho’ll have the kids, not to mention the dog

The idea to do this myself wasn’t brillMaybe someone else should write my Will

I’ll go to the Solicitors, they’ll do it rightBut I work in the day and they’re not open at night

They cost quite a lot, my Dad once saidAll doom and gloom and fill you with dread

What I need is a friendly Will WriterOne that will leave my pockets less lighter

Someone who can visit meWho do I know, now let me see

My friend mentioned Chris from Compass WillsHe fits the bill and has all the skills

He does the same things a Solicitor canI’ll give him a call, he’s my man

I heard he’s registered with AGE UKHe’s very reliable and there’s not much to pay

He’ll visit my home at a time to suit meI’ll ring him now and invite him for tea

Powers of Attorney, Will storage tooIs there anything that this man cannot do

I’ll be decisive, his number I’ll findIf I write my Will, I’ll have peace of mind
