ou’re about to make a huge difference.
Those of you who are planning on taking part in this year’s Walk MS are going to make a difference. Last year’s 12,000 participants raised $1.5 million – money that, right now, is funding cutting edge research in treating and curing the disease; money that is supporting services and programs for Wisconsinites affected by the disease; money that will be paying dividends
for years to come for everyone whose life is touched by MS.
This year is no exception. The awareness you raise and the donations you gather will be put to work. You will help STOP disease progression. You will help RESTORE function that has been lost. You will help END this disease forever. None of it is possible without you.
If you’ve already signed up, thank you. If you haven’t
yet, please do so today. Then recruit your friends. Tell your family. Invite the neighbors. Get everyone involved. Ask them to support the mission – your mission – of creating a world free of MS.
Step by step, dollar by dollar, you’re going to make a difference.

research investigator starts a new study in
pursuit of an answer to a question.
“Basically, everybiological question we ask in the laboratory revolves around
multiplesclerosis,”BonnieDittel, PhD, said. “I’m very dedicated to research in MS.”
Dittel is a senior investigator at theBloodResearchInstitute, partof theBloodCenterof Wisconsin, located in Milwaukee.BorninWisconsin,Dittel completed her under-graduate work at the Universityof Wisconsin-
Madison before getting her PhD in Pathobiology and Immunology attheUniversityof Minnesota.
Shewasawardeda$440,724grant to study the role of cannabinoidreceptor2(CB2)
inregulatinginflamma-tion in the central nervous system in EAE, the animal model of MS. Dittel is studying how synthetic and plant-derived cannabinoids – the chemical compounds thatbindtoCB2–affectimmune system cell activity.
Previously, Dittel and her colleagues had found that mice with EAE that did nothaveCB2onsomeof their immune cells, developed severe disease.
That would seem to suggest that cannabinoids might be able to regulate the immune response in EAE throughCB2.
“As sometimes happens in science, you ask the right question and you get a very dramatic result,” she said.
With the grant award, Dittel and her team are trying to
determine which cannabinoids suppress EAE the most. “We want to know to what extent we can regulate central nervoussysteminflammationthroughCB2,”Dittelsaid.“That’s the question I wanted to ask.”
Dittel received grant awards previously from the Society and is currently serving on one of several grant application review committees for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
“I see the types of grants that are funded,” she explained. “We try really hard to pick out those that are not only good science, but that will impact or have the potential to impact treatment of MS or give us a better understanding of the disease, which hopefully leads to better treatments.”

ophie Nelson remembers the day during the summer
of 2011 when she received a call from her mother, Theresa Johnson. She sounded more excited than she had been in quite a while.
Theresa was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in the fall of 2008. As her mobility and hand functions began to decrease, she started looking into resources offered by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She wrote to the Wisconsin Chapter for assistance with a portion of the cost of a new wheelchair. The exciting phone call Sophie received that day was in response to news that the Wisconsin Chapter would pay for a motorized wheelchair in full through the wheelchair reclamation program, made possible through donations to the Make a Mark for MS Tax Check-off program.
“It was really amazing to hear such good news,” Sophie said. “Good news isn’t always
plentiful when you have a family member with MS, so it was a really good day.”
According to Sophie the new wheelchair has given Theresa an element of independence that she didn’t have in her life before. Going on walks with her husband, Paul, and having the mobility to go on the porch to overlook her garden have been blessings to Theresa and her family.
The family has been participating in Walk MS and BikeMS:BestDamBikeRide since Theresa’s diagnosis. They also always “make a mark for MS” through the Wisconsin MS Tax Check-off program. The funds generated help improve the quality of life and ensure continued independence for those affected by multiple sclerosis and living in Wisconsin. MS is not only a complicated and unpredictable disease, but it is
also expensive – the annual cost of living with MS is estimated atnearly$70,000peryear.
Sophie is glad to know there is hope and inspiration for her family and she wants other people to know there is help out there for them too. Sophie encourages others to check the box for the National MS Society in the “donations” section on their tax forms. She said, “Even a small amount of money to the Society could be what gives someone who has very little independence or mobility a chance at connecting with the world again.”
Written by Sarah Otten, a marketing and communications intern for the Wisconsin Chapter and recent UW-Madison graduate.

he National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter has added three new
MS support groups serving the Marinette, Rhinelander and Chippewa County areas. This brings the total number of Wisconsin support groups to 41.
Wisconsin Chapter support groups are made up of people diagnosed with MS and are led by trained peer facilitators. Meetings offer participants a chance to discuss issues, share information and feelings, provide mutual support, socialize and listen to educational presentations by professionals. The support groups usually meet once a month and are open to spouses, family and friends.
Support groups give those with MS and their families an opportunity to stay current on what’s happening with MS research and other MS-related topics, plus the chance to receive support in a welcoming environment. Members share a belief that positive personal change can happen through individual effort with the support of others. Some groups are geared
towards common interests, such as the MS Mom’s group and the Newly Diagnosed group.

People with multiple sclerosis know when they are not doing well. Some may be concerned about tripping or falling, some may experience difficulties doing daily activities or job functions. But, not everyone knows where to turn for help. This is where Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation can help. Because the primary goal of PM&R is function.
hortly after receiving her MS diagnosis, Loren
noticed that she would sometimes stumble and fall. These problems, in addition to her existing walking problems were frustrating and discouraging. She began to rely on others to be close by to help her stand and steady herself. She was determined not to use a cane or walker. Loren also cut back her hours at work so she could better deal with her fatigue and mobility issues. Butherdoctorhadanothercourse of action to explore; he sent her for a therapy evaluation. After several months of therapy and medi-cation adjustments, Loren was able to walk without holding on to anything and – best of
all – she was able to return to her full time job. Today, Loren stays in touch with her physical therapist and together they adjust her exercise regimen to stayontopof herfluctuatingMS symptoms.
ReHABiLitAtiOn FOR MS It would be great if we could wave a magic wand or take a magic pill to help control the ups and downs of MS. Unfortunately, there is no magic pill. Buttherearethings you can do to change the course of many of your MS symptoms andflare-ups.Rehabilitation is one of those things. Research and patient experience show that the introduction of physical, occupational and speech therapy, often in combination
with medi-cations and assistive devices, can be surprisingly
effective. Research also shows that the sooner you integrate these therapies into your treatment regimen, the better.
When you begin rehabilitation for MS, a program of
stretching, aerobic exercise, and gait training will be designedspecificallyforyourneeds. Your program will
begin with a thorough assessment of your functional mobility by looking at how you move as you perform your normal daily activities. Once your evaluations are completed, your program will usually include a combination of therapy, education, and instruction in home exercises and activities.
As you progress through your rehabilitation, your rehab team will also assess your need for assistive devices and medications. These devices can include such things as canes,

crutches, walkers or braces to stabilize weakened muscles, joints or extremities. Rehab professionals will also consider the use of active devices such as functional electronic stimulation to stimulate nerves and muscles or to correct foot drop. You may also use a special treadmill that supports your body and allows you to do more intensive walking without compromising your safety. In some instances training in the use of a wheelchair or a scooter may be used in order to make the most of your functional movement. With MS, fatigue and mobility often go hand-in-hand.
Basically, themoreimpairedyour mobility, the more energy you put out. You become tired more quickly. In rehabilitation, your energy output and fatigue issues are noted and addressed. This is usually done by prescribing a customized fitnessplanthatpromotesanactive lifestyle while helping you avoid excessive fatigue.
Overall, rehabilitation for MS focuses on problem-solving with each individual and his/her family to determine what interventions will work best. The focus and ultimate goal in rehab will always be to en-hance the quality of your life.

who we are, distinguish usfrom the crowd and determine how we’re perceived.
Team names do the same thing on a much larger scale. They bring individuals together, forge group identities and make people feel they belong to something bigger than themselves. And at Wisconsin Chapter events like Walk MS, BikeMSandChallengeWalkMS, there’s no shortage of symbolic, inspirational and unique names for the hundreds of teams that participate each year.
Some are personal. There’s no doubt who teams like Walking forAndy,Shauna’sHopeandTeam Wendy were created for. Some are inspirational. Names such as Walk Tall, Endure to Cure and Stomp MS remind people of the big picture. Others prefer labels of pride: TheMightyMillers,Blazing
SaddlesandSpokeBustersrepresent the heart and soul of their team efforts. Corporate-aligned names such as Great Wolf Walkers, Sonic Streamers, MG&E Power Peddlers and Sprocket Rockets showcase companies that are committed to giving back. Then there are those with stories begging to be told: Soggy Phlebotomist, SquirrelFighters,RonnyBigBeard,SlowCookedBeef.

Tell us about your team name and the inspiration behind it. Email [email protected], subject line “What’s in a Name?”
Whether on the field, in business or at MS-related events, no two teams are alike. How they’re named shows exactly that, and says a lot about the members who belong to them.
N
Why Are Teams Important? On average, people who fundraise as part of a team raise more than those who participate on their own. More than 70% of funds raised through last year’s Walk MS came from teams, and Challenge Walk and Bike MS saw nearly 75% and more than 80% respectively. That translated to almost $2,275,000 raised to fund research into treatments and a cure. If you’d like to join a team or start one of your own, call 262-369-4400 or 800-242-3358.

elicoptering in to kick off an event is usually
reserved for rock stars and visiting dignitaries, but when it’s the Croal Open and you’re the Croal brothers, you use just such an opportunity to make a
very clear statement: “We will gotoanyextenttofightMS.”
The brothers – Tim, Mike and Dan–wereflowninalongwith their dad, Jim, to land
on the 1st fairway to mark theofficialstartof the22ndCroal Open last July. Since a one-hour helicopter ride was a featured auction item for the annual golf outing fundraiser,
their entrance generated a lot of...well…“buzz” – leading to two winning bids of $400 each.
It’s just the latest in a long list of antics and exploits that
have added to the brothers’ notoriety over the years. As fun loving as they are passionate for creating a world free of MS, they have grown what started as a reason to get together with theirbuddiesintoafive-figure,200-plus person, annual golf tournament with a dinner and silent auction. It’s something their whole family gets involved with in one way or another, including siblings Kathy and Mary, step-siblings Tere, Colleen and Tommy, all the respective spouses and an ever-growing number ofchildren, nieces and nephews. Their reason? Dorothy(Berghaus)Croal.
“I remember the pain she had to go through,” said Mike of his mom. Affectionately known as Dotty to friends, she passed away at age of 35 from complications of living with MS for years. Mike was about
7yearsoldatthetime.Dan, who was about 5 when his mom died, knows her mostly through the stories he’s been told about what an incredible woman she was.
“You feel like some-thing was stolen from you because of this dreadful disease,” he said.
As their father noted, more than any physical pain was the mental anguish of lost mobility andactivity.“However,Dottynever complained; ’till the end she made self-deprecating cracks about her lost abilities, always with her wry, knowing smile,” said Jim.
In 2002, Mike ran into childhood friend Chuck Scherwinski and learned he had been diagnosed with MS.

The brothers, known for their hijinks, got the crowd buzzing with their entrance at last year’s Croal Open.

That’s when the brothers decided to turn their golf outing – which was entering its thirteenth year – into a fundraiser for MS research and services. More than $3,000 was raised that year and it has grown exponentially ever since; nearly $40,000 was raised in 2012.
The funds go toward the totalfortheirBikeMSteam,Chuck’s Athletic Supporters, which is led by Scherwinski, a 2011 National MS SocietyVolunteerHallof Fame inductee.
“OurOpenandBikeMS are two events of the summer that I look forward to as much if not more than anything else,” Dan said. “We now have a lot of friends impacted by MS and want to make a difference for those people since we can’t do that for our mother,” Mike added.Of course, now that the planning for the 23rd annual Croal Open is underway, the brothers are faced with findingawaytooutdolastyear’s entrance.
Joked Dan, “Maybe it’ll be something with an F-18.”

“It’s a party disguised as a golf outing disguised as a fundraiser, and we’re pretty successful in all three categories,” say the brothers
of the Croal Open, which will mark its 23rd consecutive year in 2012. A fundraiser to benefit MS research and related services since 2002, it has raised more than $200,000 to date. The event itself includes a day-long golf competition with a few on-course fundraising opportunities for participants to improve their scores. There are also door prizes and raffles, along with a dinner and silent auction in the evening.
