Putting Children First is a community based project that offers support when families separate

Putting Children First is a programme designed to help parents after separation build cooperative parenting relationships in order to bring about better outcomes for children. It Works by offering parents ways in which they can develop understanding and deal with their, often painful, experiences. From this, they are offered new ways of managing the difficult transitions that accompany divorce or separation. It covers the impact of separation on parents and children, why conflict occurs and how it can be prevented, the emotional and psychological transitions that arise through separation, building a new cooperative parenting relationship and taking positive steps to make the right choices for children The Putting Children First programme can help to re-orientate their focus from the ending of their adult, intimate relationship towards building a new business like parenting relationship that is flexible and respectful. Where parents have become entrenched in conflict, it can offer strategies to ensure that their children’s needs are met. See advert page 41

Vectis Radio gives young presenter Adam his own show, so tune in

I have been in radio two whole years, my first radio broadcast was from my bedroom on my computer, broadcasting through the internet. I continued my bedroom broadcasting and then went to a local radio station and did a two hour show on a Sunday afternoon as part of a scheme they ran called Studio B. A short while later, I approach Ian Mac and he offered me a show.

I have been interested in radio for a long time now, and being on Vectis Radio has given me a chance to fulfill my dream. I think that Vectis Radio is an amazing way of communicating to the community and by having my own show I feel I can get a younger audience listening to local radio again. I would like to thank everyone at Vectis Radio, from fellow presenters, to the fans. It really is fantastic. See advert page 43

Priory School

Priory School is an Independent Co-Educational Day School for boys and girls aged 5 to 18. Its Sixth Form opened in September 2010 for 16-18 year olds, offering a range of 14 subjects including all the individual Science subjects. Priory School now offers a complete education from 5 to 18.

It is run with a Christian ethos, embodied in our new crest and uniform, of black, gold and red. This ethos considers each child individually as of absolute worth in his or her own right. The task of education is to draw out the potential the child has, in whatever field it is. We have high academic standards but also believe that the arts, including drama, music and visual arts, and team sports for both Junior & Senior pupils, are a vital part of an overall education .

In 2010, 93% of our pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs at A* - C. The Good Schools Guide recently picked out Priory School as being the best in the country for teaching Biology to boys *at GCSE*.

In 2009, and 2010, all the GCSE candidates, whether academic or vocational in ability, went on to the colleges or careers of their choice. All GCSE results to date can be found on the website.

We believe in clear rules, clear procedures and to ensure attention to each child maintain a strict policy of having a MAXIMUM class size of 16 pupils. We have seen a 20% increase in pupil numbers since September 2010, and some classes are reaching capacity. A waiting list will then be established.

The aim of Priory School is to offer a first-class education at an affordable cost in a well structured and clearly run environment to become the school of choice on the Isle of Wight. For all who visit Priory School , it is the friendly and family atmosphere that stands out, and we recommend that any prospective pupil or parent comes and sees the school to assess for themselves.

Easier Navigation

‘Three clicks and you’re off’ is the perceived wisdom for judging the effectiveness and value of a website, so when Hordle Walhampton carried out a recent review of their website, it rapidly became obvious that the navigation left much to be desired and a significant up-date was well overdue.

The Lymington prep school rose to the challenge and has just ‘gone live’ with an up-dated site that condenses the navigation down to three simple routes from the Home Page: School, Information and Contact. Immediate drop-down menus from each of these headings lead browsers simply and straightforwardly to the page of their choice/interest, whilst improved routing information makes it easier for continued navigation of the extensive site.

The Home Page also includes icons leading straight to the school’s current calendar, the termly magazine ‘Termtalk’ and, for prospective parents, the opportunity to request a prospectus.

There is a lively video illustrating the school’s boys and girls at work, ‘at home’ in the boarding house and taking part in sports and the many activities on offer. Whilst individually designed, animated icons, such as swinging sports boots, moving buses and tumbling bricks, provide fun interaction for younger browsers.

“Our website is an extremely busy, interesting and lively place that is well used by our current parents and by those looking for information on prep school education and on Hordle Walhampton,” said Jane Kerr, the school’s development director. “However, as more and more vital information was added, our navigation became confusing. This re-design has addressed the problem brilliantly and we are now confident that we more than meet any ‘three clicks’ criteria.”

Those wishing to see the new site should log on to www.hordlewalhampton.co.uk

At Mayville we know education isn’t an exact scienceWhile parents and teachers are bombarded everyday with the latest research to help their children learn, we at Mayville rely on a system that has been getting results for more than a decade.

Do girls and boys learn better in different temperatures, maybe, but what we do know without a doubt is that teaching them separately in the core subjects works for pupils, parents and teachers.

Year 1 teacher Helen Tudgay says, “Without stereotyping, boys and girls learn completely differently. All lessons are tailored to reflect the interests of each gender, boys are engaged in more practical activities, and small class sizes mean we can meet the individual needs of each child.”

Mayville sets high standards in all areas, academic, creative, physical and social and the school prides itself on offering a broad based curriculum. While we wont be insisting girls put on another jumper or boys wear a short sleeve t-shirt we will continue to do what we do best, look at each child on their own merits, continue looking at HOW children learn and educating separately but together.

Ensure your child’s future and help them succeedwith Kumon’s maths and English study programmesIn today’s competitive society, good maths and English skills are becoming increasingly important. A recent report by the National Institute of Continuing Education has shown that adults with poor numeracy skills are far more likely to be out of work or stuck in low-paid jobs. “Poor numeracy skills have a devastating effect on many people’s lives,” according to Dame Mary Marsh, author of the report. Kumon’s unique maths and English programmes help every child not only to excel academically, but also to acquire long term study skills which will open doors for them later on – whether in education or in work.

At your local Cowes or Sandown centre, Kumon’s unique worksheet-based method can be tailored to your child’s age and ability, helping them to consolidate familiar topics before moving on to something new. Regular study helps students to retain information on a long-term basis, building speed and accuracy and developing abilities such as confidence, concentration, time management and problem-solving.

Once your child is happy with a topic, Instructor Harry Vernon will set them new – and eventually unfamiliar – work, challenging them to learn for themselves. With support and guidance, the Kumon maths and English programmes will help your child to develop their capacity for learning independently and will boost their all-round confidence.

Kumon is the UK’s leading supplementary education provider, with 638 study centres and more than 60,000 students. For more information and to enrol, contact Kumon Instructor Harry Vernon on 01983 853643 or at [email protected]

Occupational Therapy with Claire Inness

People often think that Occupational Therapy (OT) is about helping you with your occupation or job. Well, in a way it is with children, as their most important job is to learn, socialise & play, become confident and successful at dressing and feeding themselves, make and keep friends and to reach their academic and social potential.

Sometimes a child can experience difficulties in daily life due to learning, social communication or movement based difficulties which impact on their daily function and independence at home and school.

They may experience difficulties with dressing, writing, participating in games & sports, riding a bike, using scissors or other tools, and with many, many more daily activities. An Occupational Therapist uses a problem solving approach based on knowledge of children’s development and medical conditions in order to provide advice & / or treatment which maximises the child’s quality of life so that they can achieve their very best.

Newchurch Nursery school It is with much regret that we have to inform you that Carole Mills (nee Jenkins) passed away on December 5th, 2010 after a short illness.

Carole took over as Playgroup Leader of Newchurch Playgroup in September 1990 and in September 1993 the Playgroup moved into a mobile classroom at Newchurch Primary School and became Newchurch Nursery. With the help of the Trustees and parents a huge fund raising effort began and in 1996 the Nursery moved into the first purpose built pre-school premises on the Island.

The Nursery has thrived from year to year and offers high quality care in its Baby room for babies aged up to two years. Win a Family Day out at Osborne House or Carisbrooke Castle Carisbrooke Castle’s four-legged ‘famous five’ – donkeys, Jack, Jill, Jimbob, Joseph and Jigsaw - are eagerly waiting to welcoming Easter visitors to their home. Families can visit them in their stables to find out a bit about their pampered life and also in the castle’s equally famous well-house, where for just few minutes a day, they love to demonstrate how the waterwheel once worked to supply the castle with its water.

With mighty battlements to march and a keep to climb, Carisbrooke truly is a storybook castle, just perfect for a day out with children. An introductory film narrated by comedian Phill Jupitus, brings the castle characters to life and explains the history of the site in a fun, informative way. Youngsters can dress up as soldiers, enjoy interactive displays, and even fire a medieval cannon or crossbow. Families can pick up a set of bowls and play on the Bowling Green as castle resident King Charles I did to relieve the boredom during his imprisonment.

Families who love the great outdoors can enjoy a day out in the grounds at Osborne House – much as Queen Victoria and her family did. The vast estate gardens are a great place for families to explore – including Swiss Cottage, the charming wooden chalet built for the royal children as a place to learn to cook, clean and grow flowers and vegetable. Each child’s had their own individual garden and personal wheelbarrow, inscribed with their initials, which can still be seen today.

Youngsters can also see the royal children’s miniature fort and army barracks and Queen Victoria’s bathing closet. Families can also have fun keeping a look out for the resident Red Squirrels who can be seen scurrying around the lawns or leaping from tree to tree.

Inside the house are the intimate royal family rooms still packed full of memorabilia and children will be able to see the original Royal children’s nursery complete with cots, children’s beds and toys, along with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s private rooms and the opulent formal state rooms.

To win one of the two family tickets, simply answer the following question:

“Name Carisbrooke Castle’s four-legged famous five?”

Cowes Chiropractic Clinic

Here at Cowes Chiropractic Clinic Esme Connelly & Rebecca Taylor see many VERY new patients - only a few days or weeks old.

Everyone’s route into the world is deemed to be the same but not every birth is without it’s complications - long labours, the cord around the baby’s neck, caesarean delivery, breech positioning etc. This can cause the baby’s skeleton to misalign which affects the way nerves function and can also cause discomfort. These factors can have a bearing on the baby’s future development and affect their feeding and sleeping. Babies generally respond well to receiv-ing chiropractic treatment and often enjoy it!

Many symptoms an older child may display; lack of concentration, disruptive behaviour and poor co-ordination, can be attributed to their complicated birth or a recent trauma. In addition to Rebecca and Esme, Phil Milner also offers chiropractic treatment to children to help maintain their sporting fitness to compete at the highest

level.

Work smarter rather than harder!By Alex Tana

We often hear the expression “work smarter but not harder”; but what does it actually mean?

Whatever work you are involved, being a parent and running a home or running a home based / small business or working for someone, work takes a lot of our time and energy. And at this time of financial restrictions the temptation is to work “harder”. Why not “smarter?”

1. Work harder ~ a fantastic way to ruin your heath, damage your family and social life, get stressed and in the end, often produce very little additional income. Or you are a maniac of “diy” in the broadest sense, you literally want to do everything yourself in the illusion that you will save money

2. Work smarter ~ using your skills and interests to do what you can and love to do best and delegating to others the rest, having a good time and resources management, focusing on urgencies and priorities rather that your moods.

Moving Home - Choosing an Estate Agent Paul Wheeler Solicitor When considering selling your home your first port of call will usually be an estate agent. The agent will be crucial to the successful sale of your property. Choose him or her carefully. You should obtain a market appraisal from at least two and preferably three agents and ask them to justify their valuation with comparisons to other properties that have sold locally. Anyone can give a high valuation figure, but actually obtaining it is another matter. Is the valuation the result of the agent’s experience and knowledge of the area or are you being told what you want to hear.

Most agents will sell on a commission only basis but with low priced properties there may be a minimum fee. Some agents will fix their commission as a percentage of the asking price, not the sale price. It is not necessarily a good idea to negotiate a lower rate of commission. The whole point of selling by commission is to give the agent the incentive to market your home enthusiastically.

It is common to appoint an agent as a ‘sole agent’ for a fixed period of time. You can still sell your home privately during this period but you cannot instruct another agent. If you do and either agent sells the property you risk having to pay commission to both! Some agents do not tie you into a fixed period contract and if the arrangement does not prove satisfactory you can bring it to an end.

It is possible to appoint more than one agent either on a joint commission basis so that whichever of them sells your home they split the commission (joint sole agency) or as multiple agents where whichever agent sells your property takes the whole commission.

Family and friends may recommend a particular agent and this is clearly a good starting point. You will become very reliant on the efforts your agent makes both in finding a suitable buyer and managing the chain when a sale is agreed and you need to establish a good rapport with them.

So take all these considerations into account and make your decision to appoint your agent to sell your home. It’s as personal as that. Along the way compromises may have to be made both in achieving a realistic and fair sale price and also in fixing a mutually acceptable completion date – but I will talk about these another time.

How to own a house without being on the legal title? If you own a house then you will have your title registered at the Land Registry. That is simple enough. No more than four people can be registered as the legal owners and it should go without saying that all owners must be 18 or over and not bankrupt.

So how can you be an owner without a registered title? Answer: A Declaration of Trust. Under English law, ownership of the legal title of a house is distinct from the ownership of the beneficial title. In essence, this means that you may own the house but are not entitled to the proceeds of sale when it is sold. This is arranged by the legal owners stating that they hold the property under a trust on whatever terms set out in the trust deed. The trust can be very flexible and protect monies invested or ensure someone has the right to live in a house.

Some common uses are:-

l Protect parents’ capital invested in a son or daughter’s first purchase.l Protect unequal contributions of capital to a purchase by unmarried couples and provision for sale if required by one partner. l Set out the terms and proportions under which a commercial property may be held by business partners.l Help protect capital asset of a couple where one owner is self-employed and may be liable to future substantial financial claims against his business. To be most effective, Declarations of Trust should be signed when the property is first purchased. Remember always take legal advice to ensure that all parties to the document receive independent legal advice. Paul Wilks.

Help for Children

What can I do if I need to support a child who has been bereaved?

At some point most of us will face the death of someone close to us. This can be a difficult experience for adults, but equally as complicated for children. It is estimated that about 400 island children per year experience the death of someone significant in their lives. YMCA Children’s Bereavement Service has been set up to help children and young adults from 0 to their 19th birthdays to cope with the impact of bereavement. Appointments can now be made with the service for children and young people who live on the Isle of Wight.

Not all children will need the same level or type of support when someone close to them dies. The service encourages children to grieve in a healthy way through offering one-to-one counselling and practical support. Access to group sessions, health promotion advice and community based support programmes are also offered. A helpline and website is available for children affected by bereavement, as well as for adults who are supporting them.

We encourage any adult who knows of a child that has recently been affected by bereavement to please get in touch with us. For more information please contact 01983 861072 or email [email protected]

Aiming High – Daycamps for Children with severe and complex needs.

Daycamps at YMCA Winchester House have been successfully running for over four years offering holiday care and activities for children from 4 - 14 years. For the last 2 years YMCA Winchester House has been part of the Aiming High for disabled children scheme, enabling children with disabilities to attend daycamps alongside their mainstream peers supported by specialist staff.

We offer a range of support from a ‘buddy’ to 1:1 or higher.

After the initial enquiry children are offered a home visit to assess their needs and are then allocated either 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3 specialist playworker. The playworkers support the children to join in the activities or adapt the programme to suit each child’s needs.

If you would like more information about the Daycamps please telephone Diana Jeffries on 01983 862441 ext 2209 or go to the website www.ymca-fg.org

Nettlecombe Farm.

Nettlecombe Farm in Whitwell is now offering a variety of activities for disabled children and their families and carers though the government’s Aiming High for Disabled Children programme. The vision behind the initiative, which at a local level, is jointly run by the Isle of Wight Council and the NHS, is “for all families with disabled children to have the support they need to live ordinary family lives as a matter of course”.

The owner of Nettlecombe Farm Jose Morris said “We are delighted to offer our facilities to disabled children who live on the Island. We have a number of disabled children who visit from the mainland and have often thought how rewarding it would be to be able to offer something to local children with disabilities. The Aiming High programme has allowed us to do this and we very much look forward to making a difference to the lives of these children and their families.
